I mean it's so clearly such a great stinking heap of horse shit, how can anyone actually believe it?
Another mum at playgroup today was telling me what kind of personality my 9 month old will have based solely on her star sign.
All pleasant enough stuff but she actually believed it.
What's wrong with people?

I love these threads. Everyone and their granny comes on here and says 'star signs are shit' etc. etc. etc..

I can't understand how anyone believes in them...blah blah blah.

If you said the same thing about any religion - Christianity, Islam, Judaism etc., a whole load of people would be objecting. IT'S THE SAME FUCKING THING.

THERE IS ABOUT AS MUCH PROOF OF ASTROLOGY WORKING AS RELIGION.

Find something more dangerous to argue about people.

Charlie - of course you're right, but its nice to have a bit of light entertainment from time to time.

No, it's not the same thing, Charlieknows. But that's a whole other thread ;)

Hippocrates who was himself a serious astrology student, and considered to be the father of medicine (This is untrue. Imhotep, an Egyptian, was the Father of medicine) once said, ?He who practices medicine without the benefit of the movement of the stars and the planets is a fool.?

But maybe you are right, and it must all be 'a great stinking heap of horse shit'

They did away with my planet Shock I was a Scorpio with Pluto as my planet but Pluto, it turns out, is not a planet. WHAT AM I? I have no identity. Will I be reclassified as a small personoid?

Yes, it's cobblers and YANBU.

its all utter twaddle, but I think for most people just light-hearted entertainment.

It's the same kind as shit as religious-types believe in, on similar evidence, but backed up by serious money, history and political influence.

Horoscopes are peddled on a daily basis, unlike religion ...ooooh, I forgot "Thought For the Day".

We can all laugh the horoscope believers, and I do, but poke fun at the God-botherers.

Bollocks, people don't 'believe' in astrology like a faith thing - on the contrary they think it's all scientific.

At least I know my Christianity is based on belief in something unknowable and unfathomable to many.

The best way I've found to deal with horoscopes is to read all of them and pick the best one for the day/week. That way you can choose to be a Scorpio and "meet the man of your dreams" or a Virgo and "enjoy a new journey" or maybe and Aquarius in order to "seek out a new business opportunity".

Works every time Smile

I think it can be positively dangerous. According to my son's chart he will face almost insuperable obstacles to happiness throughout his life. I don't want him to ever see it. He would worry and look for evidence that his life is and will remain awful. While, in fact, things are going well for him. I don't want him having a cloud hanging over him.

Report
Lamorna · 02/02/2011 07:56

Of course it would CokeFan, there is no utter point in reading sun sign astrology, a twelth of the population isn't going to 'enjoy a new journey'.
I didn't understand the 'million dollar prize' part, it can't tell you the numbers that will win the lottery tonight. My chart tells me that I am unlikely to get any money that I haven't earned myself.
It is just a bit like a weather forecast, if you think it might rain then you take an umbrella. If a person is excessively shy it will show up on the chart. They don't have to stay excessively shy, but it will be very difficult for them and they will have to work at it in contrast to the extrovert who can just walk into any situation and become the life and soul of the party. If someone is prone to depression it will show up, even the periods that they are likely to be depressed-again they don't have to follow it but it is probably impossible for them to 'pull themselves together'.
I know that people will still scoff, but at least they ought to realise that astrology has nothing to do with newspapers and sun signs (or very little).
Lots of people use it, they just don't admit to it. In RL I don't mention it!

That was a very irresponsibe way to put it Abr1de, I wouldn't even see it like that. Everyone has challenges to overcome, they make you a stronger person. I wouldn't worry about it-live for the moment.

Sorry, not him in particular, everone should try and live in the present and not worry about the future. Very few people manage without unhappiness. How would you know that you were happy if you were always in that state?

I know what you mean, Lamorna. A bit of struggle in life is the grit that makes the pearl. But it was the predeterminated nature of it that made me wince!

It isn't 'predetermined', think of it like a hand of cards, some people get a lousy one and play them wonderfully and some get a fantastic one and throw them away. For example I have a friend with a terrible port wine stain all over one side of her face, she has a lovely DH and 3 super DDs because she has always just got on with life, contrast it to the model like woman, born into a family with lots of money and every opening, who becomes a heroin addict and dies in a squalid bedsit at 35yrs. You can choose what you do with what you are given.
It is the difficulties in life that make people strive and make them successful. We all know the 'self made man' whose DCs are a waste of space because life is very easy.
The astrologer put it in a negative (and I think irresponsible way) but there is no need to dwell on it and it may well be very positive.

What charlie said.

I find it fascinating the range of made-up stuff people believe in to try and make sense of life. We're not much different in this respect from Skinner's superstitious pigeons

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread (are saggittarians supposed to be lazy?) so apologies if I'm repeating others.

YANBU. DH told me about some experiment at a show, where they gave people different papers according to their star sign, describing their personality.

They then asked them all if the description was correct, and everyone said it was. Then it was revealed that regardless of star sign everyone was given the same paper! Hahahahaha :o

Lamorna, the million dollar prize refers back to an earlier message I posted. There is a million dollar prize available to any astrologer (or other purveyor of woo supernatural wonder) who demonstrate that they can actually do what they claim to be able to do.

As Christeen wossname makes claims about her astrological abilities that seem eminently testable - eg, that she can predict movements in the commodities markets based on astrological divination, or that she can identify fraudsters - then she could apply for the prize. And, if there were any basis for her claimed powers, she'd not only win it but get incredibly good publicity for her business. I wonder why she hasn't?

I don't even know what dd's star sign is. She was born in the Chinese year of the golden pig though (according to some bloke on the hospital radio) which means, er, something prophetic I'm sure. I was born in the Chinese year of the monkey which pleases me greatly. DH is a cock.

Thats an interesting distinction - between something that people think has a rational basis but which can be proved false and .... sorry, but is that supposed to make religion better than astrology? Grin
