I mean it's so clearly such a great stinking heap of horse shit, how can anyone actually believe it?
Another mum at playgroup today was telling me what kind of personality my 9 month old will have based solely on her star sign.
All pleasant enough stuff but she actually believed it.
What's wrong with people?

Yes, its yer hormones. Get your doc to prescribe an appropriate oral contraceptive. Marvelon works for me.

Oblomov · 03/02/2011 20:37

Do you ALL think its a load of tosh then ?
I mean every single poster ?
REALLY ?
Not one of you thinks theres anything in it at all.
REALLY ?
Well thats odd. Because I think I am quite Aquarian. Everyhting I've ever read on Aquarians (not that much, but what I have read, I am totally totally Aquarian, like you wouldn't believe).
And I get on very well with most other Aquarirnas I have met. And my dh and my 2 best freinds are Leo's. Which is who Aquarians are supposed to get on well with.
And i would never ever ask anyone what star sign they are.
But many of the people I get on well with, I am invited to their birthday parties. Thus, I know, when they are born, thus what star sign they are.
AND then I find out I have zero parties to go to. Like all year. NONE. and then get invited to 4 on the same day. So I kind of work it out. And it makes sense.
Surely I am not the ONLY ONE, this happens to ?

Pauling took up to 40,000mg and gave himself the shits. It can also give you kidney stones.

Good advice then.

GrimmaTheNome · 03/02/2011 20:40

Its random. Random numbers cluster far more than most people realise.

My dog's birthday is the day after my DHs, I don't think they're cosmically linked.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 03/02/2011 20:41

Oblomov - it probably does happen to thousands of people. And not to thousands of others. That's how randomness works. There are a lot of people in the world.

Thanks Grimma. And yes oblomov i do think it's bollocks for all the hundreds of reasons already discussed.
I did notice some posts suggesting it was lame to talk about astrology and not religion.
I don't think there's a true parallel.
For a start religion doesn't attempt to predict an individuals future, nor does it pigeon hole people into 12 types.
anyway, bolloks to both of them.

OP posts:
Lamorna · 03/02/2011 21:58

Astrology isn't putting people into 12 types!

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 22:02

now its more contrived and pseudo-science than that.pretends to be bit mathematical and sciencey too

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 22:06

You need maths to draw up a chart scottishmummy!

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 22:09

aye, astrology pretends to be wee bitty intellectual and mathematical.for pseudo-intellectual quacks

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 22:14

Even if you think it is utter tosh you can't deny it needs Maths to draw it up, you need it to a certain extent if you have a computer programme to draw it.

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 22:16

mere preseence of maths and pc doesnt legitimise it.still gibbersish

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 22:18

Of course it doesn't legitimise it-I was merely poining out that involved maths. I don't think there is science in it, but plenty of maths.

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 22:18

pointing

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 22:23

aye some folk think vordeman did maths on countdown, still doesnt make her interesting

Lamorna · 03/02/2011 22:25

I think that I am losing the point here. She had a maths degree-I didn't think the point of maths was to make you interesting.

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 22:40

couple of charts doesnt legitimise astrology or make it interseting

StuffingGoldBrass · 03/02/2011 22:51

Megadoses of Vitamin C do appear to have some beneficial effect on the skin. However, dosage high enough to cure your spots also gives you the explosive shits.
(I know this because I overdosed regularly on Vit C having misread the label. My unlovely skin improved but I didn't get the benefit of showing it off to people because I couldn't get off the toilet to do so.)

GrimmaTheNome · 03/02/2011 22:58
Grin
scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 23:03

yes too much vitC will give you the squits

GrimmaTheNome · 03/02/2011 23:03

SM - I think Lamorna's point was that you said 'pretends to be wee bitty intellectual and mathematical' and she is saying it is mathematical, not pretending.

However, even if astrologers do actually employ Hard Sums that has no bearing at all on whether its horseshit.

Numerologists do stuff with numbers, its horseshit too.

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 23:08

astrology can do sums and charts and chant an incantation.still doesnt make it any less wacky

StuffingGoldBrass · 04/02/2011 01:23

People do all sorts of Hard Sums to 'prove' that there's an algebraical code in the Bible which tells anyone who can crack it that
a) the world is ruled by lizards
b) Wasn't Peter Mandelson one of them
c) there is a way to make money out of bottle tops
and d) you've left the gas on, go and turn it off.

This doesn't make them any less menkle.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 08:21

No one was saying that maths makes it less wacky or more believable! I was just objecting to the pretends to be mathematical. It is mathematical, fact. (I don't think there is any science in it).
