I mean it's so clearly such a great stinking heap of horse shit, how can anyone actually believe it?
Another mum at playgroup today was telling me what kind of personality my 9 month old will have based solely on her star sign.
All pleasant enough stuff but she actually believed it.
What's wrong with people?

Erm, honey and lemon does work for cold symptoms such as sore throats and coughts. Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. If you google, you'll see lots of scientific explanation as to why it works

PlentyOfParsnips · 04/02/2011 10:44

I was only ever in it for the Hard Sums Wink

Oblomov of course you believe in woo shite - Aquarians are the biggest bunch of flakes on the planet Grin

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 10:56

I like maths so the actual drawing up of a chart is quite satisfying Grin

Appletrees · 04/02/2011 12:29

Yes too much can give kidney stones, this happened to a friend of mine.

Not pissing it away if you are poorly..like Vit A for measles. When you need more, you use it.

Appletrees · 04/02/2011 12:32

Also re the anecdotal evidence you've given.

Just proves really that blanket advice is no good and people need more tailored nutritional advice.

ThePosieParker · 04/02/2011 13:48

Do people really believe in starsigns? Grown ups? It's all mumbo jumbo and rather childish, bit like religion.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 16:49

Are all grown ups supposed to think the same? Rather an odd view and not supported by any topic on MN.

MillyR · 04/02/2011 16:54

Of course not all adults are supposed to think the same. Sometimes adults think things that are not true. We all fail to understand something at some point in our lives.

MillyR · 04/02/2011 16:59

Oblomov, I'm also an aquarian. Obviously being aquarius is clearly the most flattering description (and even more flatteringly I have my moon in sagittarius). So like you, I'd like to believe it.

Further more, my children are both very clever star signs, and it would be nice if they could be allowed into a selective school on that basis alone. Rather like Steiner schools make all the 4 different mystical child types sit in different parts of the room in upper school.

But despite it all being in my favour, it is still nonsense.

seeker · 04/02/2011 17:03

Of course not all grown ups should think or believe the same. But if some of them think and believe stupid things, they shouldn't be surprised if the rest of us point and laugh.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 17:04

How can you have a clever star sign?

ThePosieParker · 04/02/2011 17:12

Derren Brown gives five people detailed star sign readings, all say they are true for them....all readings were the same.

UnquietDad · 04/02/2011 17:41

Of course people are not supposed to all think the same, but it helps if what you believe can be supported by a little evidence. Otherwise it is just... well... made up. You see?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 04/02/2011 18:12

But the world IS run by Lizards.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 18:56

I've never heard of Derren Brown but if he makes them bland enough anyone could agree with them. I don't think they could agree if they were quite specific.
People will keep talking about star sign readings. Intellectual ability would be shown by a variety of things, starting with the position of mercury, house and sign and connection to other planets.

seeker · 04/02/2011 19:51

Put Derren Brown Investigates into Utube. I particularly like his gentle and courteous demolition of Joe Power.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 21:12

I will have a look later, but if you write things like 'doesn't suffer fools gladly' or 'has a good sense of humour' most people are going to agree. If you are specific as in 'you are a professional singer' or 'you enjoy high risk sports' then people are far less likely to agree. I could sit down down and write a bland character description that most people could say applied to them. If I was to tell them what their early years home life was like, what sort of relationship they had with parents, which hobbies they had and their likely career most people couldn't say that it applied to them.

seeker · 04/02/2011 21:18

I agree, Lamorna - but you couldn't do that. Not to someone you hadn't met and couldn't "cold read"

seeker · 04/02/2011 21:20

I'm not saying, by the way, that all "cold readers" are charlatlans -although I believe that most are. I think some people are so instinctive and talented at it that they don't actualy realize that they are doing it - they genuinely believe that they are doing a reading, when they are actually unconscuiously picking up cues.

bettybosseye · 04/02/2011 21:21

Lamorna if you could do that you should do that million dollar challenge thingamy. Let us know how you get on.

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2011 21:21

"Intellectual ability would be shown by a variety of things"

Like capacity for understanding and assimilating knowledge into a consistent worldview, and ability to then judge whether or not pathetically unsupported theories are credible or crackpot?

seeker · 04/02/2011 21:26

In fact, Lamorna - here's a challenge for you. I'll give you a date of birth, and any other anonymous details you want, and I'll pay you to do a reading. I undertake to come on here and analyze the reading you do - and if it's as accurate as you say it will be, I'll give 1000 quid to the charity of your choice. And I promise to be completely honest.

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 21:40

People do make a lot of money for reading charts. I have had mine done and it was largely correct and it was specific and I deliberately didn't give information. What is more, since looking into it and reading books I can see exactly how anyone could arrive at the same point. I expect they don't go in for the big prize because you can't say exactly how people are going to use it or how it works out, for example it would be very difficult to tell whether someone's father had died or whether the parents had divorced and contact with the father had been severed. It may show that someone has a nice singing voice and could earn money from it, but they may not have used the talent or just used it for fun. It isn't cut and dried, people have choice!

It is like a hand of cards. 4 people can sit down and play cards and the first person leads hearts, when they have finished the game the cards are put back in the same place and 4 more people play them. The first person leads clubs and the game goes completely differently , it may end up the same or it may be similar or it may be completely different.
I know that most people will think my twins answer from earlier a complete cop out but it illustrates the point, they had the same chart but one was living the Aries sun and the other the Pisces moon, they may change when older. People start with a map of planets but they have choice of what they do with the potential.
Someone may have a difficult to control temper, some will let it rule them but some will use anger management techniques.
Seeker, you must recognise some of the Leo charateristics in your personality and one thing is for sure, you are not going to change your mind whatever the argument!

CoteDAzur · 04/02/2011 21:46

Because there is a possibility that you might change your mind? Or anyone else on this thread, for that matter? Hmm

Lamorna · 04/02/2011 21:47

You can ridicule all you like seeker (I know you will) but much as I would like to take your challenge I am not an astrologer, I did a short course about 15 yrs ago and read books, I haven't touched it since. It would take me hours and hours and I simply don't have the time. I only came on here to say that sun sign astrology is rubbish, but a fully drawn up chart works to my satisfaction and I think it gives a fairly accurate character reading.
I might take it up when I retire but I doubt whether you want to wait that long and I will probably devote my time to family history instead. I think it is probably better not to know what is in your chart!
