Random old ladies touching my baby's hands!

AGHHHHHH

So this happened again...

In Tesco's the other day and my baby is in the trolley and I am shopping away when an old lady (I only put old as it has always been old ladies who have done this!) comes up to us and takes my baby's hand in hers...

I really really hate this! Why do people I do not know insist on touching my baby's hands? She puts them in her mouth still, I don't want random strangers who I don't know touching her hands.

Get orrrrfffff! I don't want people touching my baby's hands! One time, this other old lady who was coughing and sniffing came up and went to touch my baby's hand and was offended when I moved my baby away!

Do any of you ladies get annoyed by this or does it not bother you?!

hmmm, a mate said to me that with her DS1 she sterilised everything up to a year. With DS2 and having lots more to do etc she sterilised up to 6 months but by DS3 she didn't bat an eyelid if he was chewing on the dog...

As I have said elsewhere, we can pick up bugs anywhere. From door handles, trolleys, prams, cots, teddy bears, other snotty children, walking around waitrose BREATHING Shock

Old people are not by definition contagious. If they are actually dirty you can wipe baby's hand.

iPaddle · 21/01/2011 20:30

Your baby will be touching FAR worse than another human beings hands.

It cant really be about germs, can it? otherwise how would you even be able to get through the day? For a start, just imagine how many germs are on that trolley...

The old ladies aren't weird, but you most certainly are. Feel sorry for your kid, getting messages from the start that other human beings are to be kept at a distance.

ISNT · 21/01/2011 20:30

Am always heartened by the volume of "don't be silly it's nice" responses on these threads Smile

Pumpster · 21/01/2011 20:30

What does pfb mean?
Think you are being silly. Squirt a bit of magicbreastmilk on baby's hands, jobsagoodun!

WimpleOfTheBallet · 21/01/2011 20:30

Changeisagoothing...where I live they put them in their hands too! North England obviously...I hadn't ever heard of it until I took DD out for the firt time and random villagers kept giving her money!

She was very new so they were putting it on her pram cover!

When I got back my Mum said "DId she get many pounds?"I was so shocked...it was a weird thing...bt so lovely!
People .usually elderly ones still soemtimes gve my youngest a coin...on the bus for instance..20p or something.. she's always thrilled ...she's 2.

My DS once tried to eat a snail. He's also eaten cat food. Which would you rather? Snail or old lady?

activate · 21/01/2011 20:31

I hate reading that people are upset when strangers show interest in their children and babies

hate it

with a passion

I think it is symptomatic of the denigration of society and you should fight against it

don't care if it's your first child - do your best to get over yourself

Mapley · 21/01/2011 20:32

What i hate more is when people you know take drugs touch your babies hands. I'm happy for people to have to freedom to choose whether they take drugs, and tis none of my business aslongs as they act with respect to those around them. I used to indulge sometimes before I had ds, and hopefully will again at an appropriate time in the future. But I hate it when they then think it's ok to touch a tiny child too. freaks me out good and proper.

Voodoobollox · 21/01/2011 20:32

Creepy as fuck. Not the old ladies but you. Biscuit

Hecate my DS1 too. And he shouted "bum" at the same time, just incase anyone was unaware what he was up to!

lollymad · 21/01/2011 20:35

Coins in their hands here too - also in the North so must be a Northern thing!

Can't say people touching him bothers me at all - DS grins gummily around at people from the trolley all the time, I think it's lovely that people are taking notice of him and responding.

RoadCraftGuru · 21/01/2011 20:35

I make exceedingly good babies (Wink) so this has happened to me a lot.

It's lovely. They are complimenting your child. You are brightening their day. Win - Win.

(And you can always wipe their hands!)

PigValentine · 21/01/2011 20:35

NinkyNonker · 21/01/2011 20:36

Never bothered me.

PussinJimmyChoos · 21/01/2011 20:37

I think its lovely. I always like it when old ladies beam at DS in the supermarket or on the bus and if they stop and chat to him, I chat back

They may be going back to an empty house and you are the only person they have spoken to all day - have a bit of charity

aPixie · 21/01/2011 20:37

I'm ok with it in general.

I must admit I did freak out once when this lady came up and started touching and putting her fingers in my baby's mouth because you could smell the alcohol and fags a mile off, her nails where really long and black, and the nicotine stains covered her whole bloody fingers. [puke]

I love the elderly folk who come over to us in a cafe and randomly pick up the baby for a cuddle, means I get a couple minutes peace to drink my coffee. Grin

bubblewrapped · 21/01/2011 20:37

YABU and more than a bit paranoid..

Get over yourself...

BlessedAssurance · 21/01/2011 20:39

Oh i sympathise,i started a thread too when my DD was born and people were a bit nice to me because she was only two weeks old,

it used to bother me too, only in my case its not cute old ladies, its prostitutes coming to the salon owned by my friend,i really didn't like them touching her,

now she is nine months and smiles at everybody and i wouldn't stop people even if i tried, she is like a hook, she draws them in,don't worry just keep wet wipes close if you are worried that they will infect her with some cold, which can happen,

clevercloggs · 21/01/2011 20:39

blimey, this old gal (46) makes a mental note never to touch another child with affection

to be on the safe side, best not even make eye contact in case it upsets them and their tears makes their face go rusty Confused

bubblewrapped · 21/01/2011 20:40

its prostitutes coming to the salon owned by my friend,i really didn't like them touching her

ffs... Hmm

BlessedAssurance · 21/01/2011 20:40

sorry forgot to say i am now loving the attention DD gets,it means she is lovely and people actually want to cuddle her,,

hocuspontas · 21/01/2011 20:41

Unless you put on sterile surgical gloves every time you touch your own baby, you have the same germs on your hands as the old lady's. From the trolleys, shelves, goods, doors, conveyor belts, change etc.
