I have just come across this article:

www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Huntingdon-St-Ives-St-Neots/Playgroup...

am i being unreasonable to be disgusted at how this can be legal.

OP posts:

Dobie

I mention colour because it often appears that, for the people I am talking about, colour is an issue - the reason they didn't get the job is not because they are almost wholly lacking in hard and soft skills, are unmotivated, and have an entitlement mentality - it's because they are white and so obviously it's a case of positive discrimination in favour of you-know-who.

There you go, hope that's clear now.

MIFLAW · 21/01/2011 19:01

"Run along you chavey wag!!!"

No idea what that means.

It's probably shit though.

dobiegirl · 21/01/2011 19:03

why would only white people be unmotivated, lacking in skills and have an entitlement mentality -see what you're doing? See how we could go round and round for hours with talk like this?

It's going nowhere, go home!!!

dobiegirl · 21/01/2011 19:04

yes it is shit Grin

rockinhippy · 21/01/2011 19:05

^Rockin

I am not defending or attacking the actions of that group, but tbh not being bothered to speak English when only one (new) attendee needs English to be spoken doesn't seem a major sin to me.

I think a lot of groups, of all persuasions, turn frighteningly easily into cliques and don't particularly worry as much as they should about the feelings of new members^

You ARE right there MILFLAW but in this case it was the L/A employed group leader who was at fault by joining in & not making everyone feel welcome, as her role would of dictated, the group closed down for a while & when it re-opened it was under different staff, I heard there were a lot complaints.....apparently the powers that be sat up & took more notice when they had complaints from other minority groups

Like I said, its just the nature of the beast, & there will be a lot more happening than just this one thats made the News

ThePosieParker · 22/01/2011 08:13

MIFLAW...Do you not have sympathy for white (well any colour) working poor with little aspiration or achievement? Don't you think that they deserve as much help as immigrants who are newly arrived upon our shores?

I'm glad you mentioned colour because the playgroup leader was interested in colour too. White British, only, were banned from his group..as we all know the only sign of immigrant blood is not being whiteHmm.

Most prejudice in modern UK is against class, whether you're black, Asian or white if you're poor you have a worse deal.

I wonder where you get the idea that most people that are moaning about immigration are lazy? It's just not true. Most people that feel marginalised are the working poor, not just white working poor but there's plenty of all nationalities that would prefer we limited our borders...two of my closest friends parents that are least open to immigration are immigrants themselves.

ThePosieParker · 22/01/2011 08:15

MIFLAW...There was no elephant in the room, btw.

fedupofnamechanging · 22/01/2011 08:18

Spot on with your last two posts Posie

Is it possible to do a Bear emoticon with a grenade up its rear-end?

Erm - don't see much reported on this but the quote from the organiser is..

Last night administrator Roger Owen, 66, said: "It is a group for ladies from other countries. If lots of British people are allowed in it would change the nature of it.

"We're not sure they would give us money if we were offering the same services for local people'.

It could be that it's funding for non nationals only but other reporting says the two mums involved were asked there race.

So we don't really know.

I'd personally think that if it's funding for a particular newly arrived group from one particular country (say Somali or Moldovan etc) and it involved interpreters and other sorts of support I'd say OK I see the objective here. But if it's really for mums to meet each other and integrate into a community completely devoid of Brits then I think it's bloody daft.

And there's something about this that smacks of non white British women only and if so the organiser should be sacked from his role.

If my non white british mum turned up with ds would she be let in because she somehow represents 'foreign' (but isn't).

I do think that UK has some of the best will in the world but with some really odd decisions and outcomes - because we over analyse everything and we have some really stupid people taking decisions on things they clearly have no clue about. Just like when we were told we couldn't have children and we looked at adoption it would be difficult given our racial mix as a couple (when they try to match a child to your mix). Bonkers. Thank god we managed to conceive a child - if not the adoption process would have probably led to zero just down to ethnicities involved (nothing to do with loving parents).

'Their' not 'there'

MIFLAW · 23/01/2011 01:58

"MIFLAW...Do you not have sympathy for white (well any colour) working poor with little aspiration or achievement? Don't you think that they deserve as much help as immigrants who are newly arrived upon our shores?"

Absolutely I do. Though of course, by virtue of being born here, they have had that help for years - via free health care, free universal secondary education, anti-child labour laws, sexual equality - the odds have been stacked in their favour and they have made precisely fuck all of it. But yes, of course they deserve continued help and encouragement to achievbe, not only for them, but for the greater good of our country.

But I have no sympathy at all with fascists. And the BNP comes from a long, proud tradition of British fascism. And when someone's only excuse for not working, rather than any failure, shortcoming or simple bad luck on your won part, is that the immigrants are getting preferential treatment, then whether you like it or not, you are making a racist statement and I (and many others) will judge you accordingly.

I mean, look at that womn you quoted earlier. A case in point. I am sure that one of the reasons she is out of work is that life is hard where she lives - and that comes through very clearly in her posting.

But another huge reason is that, whoever is at fault, she can scarcely write. The Polish immigrants who work for minimum wage in my local cafe have far better English than her. Where, in her posting, is the acknowledgement of that factor? Answer - nowhere. Apparently employers would be queuing up to take her on at 30k a year if only those pesky immigrants would go home. Total lack of realism.

MIFLAW · 23/01/2011 02:05

"why would only white people be unmotivated, lacking in skills and have an entitlement mentality -see what you're doing?"

No - I see what YOU'RE doing, though - trying to make it appear like I said anything of the sort. Again, you really are demonstrating poor reading skills - is that why you've got a chip on your shoulder about immigrants, because many of them are succeeding where you are failing?

Lots of black people, Asian people, people of all races, are feckless and lazy.

But where is the Asian political party, operative in this country, that denies the holocaust and attempts to blame white people for Asian unemployment? I mean, not just people saying that, but an organised political party?

Where is the political party for disgruntled Black people who say that they would like forced repatriation of white immigrants (most recently, the Irish - but, also, of course, the Jews, the Huguenots, the Normans - how far back do you have to go before immigrants stop being immigrants?)

It's one thing to be lazy. It's another to blame someone else for your laziness. And it's another thing again to blame someone else purely on the basis of their skin colour.

MIFLAW · 23/01/2011 02:09

"I wonder where you get the idea that most people that are moaning about immigration are lazy?"

not something I said. Lots of people have concerns about the rate, nature and criteria for immigration. That is the basis for reasoned debate.

But a lot of the people who blame immigration for every problem in their lives, taking no personal responsibility at all, are nasty racists. The type who vote BNP. And one thing we can confidently say about the majority of BNP voters is that, if they have nothing else in common, then they have whiteness.

Tortington · 23/01/2011 03:00

i never have understood the complication with this issue.

no - one would disagree regarding people working here illegally - so illegal immigrants not the issue.

the issue is legal immegration and the numbers allowed by right to come into this country.

here is where it is very simple me thinks

if a person thinks that this number is too high, then it is people in power, political people to blame.

However, IME racist people that i know , and sadly i know a town full, blame the individual person, not the politicians.

and bizarrely, most of those people don't vote.

---

regarding the article in the OP, there was clearly and administration and communication issue which means there is a staff failing.

it is encouraging that women from different cultures and countries can come together to share experiences. I am sure that the woman in the article wouldn't have been bothered if this was explained to her before she actually registered.
