Rude woman in tesco

This is my first AIBU so please be gentle!

In Tesco earlier. Woman in front of me in queue, unloading her shopping from small trolley. I leave a gap, put a divider on and start unloading my shopping also small trolley. The following then happens:

Her: What do you think you are doing? (aggressive tone)
Me: errr.... unloading my shopping
Her: well I have a full trolley you know
Me: ok will move my stuff down a bit, is not a problem, you only had to ask nicely
Her: silence

So was I BU unloading my shopping before she had finished? Didn't think I was, have done it before and no problems.

So AIBU or was she?

Lotzer, that is a serious transgression of etiquette. I feel your anger there!

lozster · 16/01/2011 16:52

Ha! Yes, MotherJack - we then went on to have a supermarket top trumps competition where she claimed superior knowledge as she 'used to work in Asda' and I retorted with 'well I used to work in Sainsbury's and it's my stuff so leave it alone!'

I've never had much problem with loading the belt but have noticed that some people (mostly o.a.ps - sorry) that tend to stand right up the top of the belt when I am packing my bags even when their shopping is right down at the other end.

They then stand right by you when you are putting your card in the machine and typing your PIN. I had a right case of PMT one day and someone was doing this to me which began to really piss me off. When the cashier told me the amount I was standing by the card machine literally touching shoulders with this man. I then asked him if he would like to get his wallet out. He looked a bit puzzled and asked why so I proceeded to tell him that of he was so interested in my shopping he could bloody pay for it. Probably thought I was a right stroppy cow but it really annoyed me.

i'm shocked at how many people obviously look into another's trolley - you cannot possibly judge how much space they need on the belt, you should not be looking at their trolley.

you may chat politely (or exchange pleasantries such as in 'toughas'' example), you never comment on the contents of another person's trolley.

It's like when someone's petticoat is showing, one simply adheres to the fact that such a thing is not happening.

MotherJack · 16/01/2011 22:29

lol - of course you can judge how much space people need if it's the last end of the trolley/last bits and bobs and the conveyor is longer than those in M&S. It's not about what is in it but more volumetric properties. What are you so paranoid about buying, Kickass?

Why do people think it's ok to stare gormlessly into space with a trolley full of stuff that will take an aeon to unload whilst the person in front only has a handful of items and a football pitch of free conveyor belt behind. There are often people behind the person behind you.

It's not your personal space. It's not the same as what Petal describes (which is truly annoying!!). It's a conveyor belt.

Just seen this thread, YABU and you were the one bienf rude, I always wait for the person in font to finish unlaoding thier shopping before I do mine.

LadyBiscuit · 16/01/2011 22:42

Thank you for this thread Toriana. It has amused me hugely :o

Lotzer - I can beat that. The other day I was waiting to unload behind a lady with a lot of shopping. A lady waiting in the queue opposite wandered over and started rearranging her shopping. I thought she knew the woman at my till but no, she was clearly just bored!
