Rude woman in tesco

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 20:23

This is my first AIBU so please be gentle!

In Tesco earlier. Woman in front of me in queue, unloading her shopping from small trolley. I leave a gap, put a divider on and start unloading my shopping also small trolley. The following then happens:

Her: What do you think you are doing? (aggressive tone)
Me: errr.... unloading my shopping
Her: well I have a full trolley you know
Me: ok will move my stuff down a bit, is not a problem, you only had to ask nicely
Her: silence

So was I BU unloading my shopping before she had finished? Didn't think I was, have done it before and no problems.

So AIBU or was she?

OMG, I seriously cannot believe that everyone is calling the op rude for starting to unload her shopping. It's actually quite laughable. Like I said I've never seen anyone wait for the person in front to put EVERY single item on the belt before unloading their own if there is space.

Surely if there was space on the belt in the first place then the rude woman obviously didn't have much shopping in the first place because face it, those belts aren't huge.

Oh well, I'm with you OP

MsKLo · 14/01/2011 20:33

this has got me thinking about how i unpack my shopping - very messily - you would not like my way sarah! Wink

YABU leave me to put my shopping on thankyou - converyor belt is mine all mine for that period of time, if I have space left over, then I will allow you to use it.

shinydiscoball · 14/01/2011 20:34

YABU and I agree it's an odd thing to do -I would feel like you were rushing me if you did it to me... but she could have been nicer I guess

MsKLo · 14/01/2011 20:35

not everyone aPixie!

MsKLo · 14/01/2011 20:35

gosh, i never realised there was such a conveyor belt etiquette...

BitOfFun · 14/01/2011 20:36

YANBU. I do this, nobody has ever complained. I do guesstimate how much space they'll need tough and put the bar down accordingly.

I never realized what a rude bastard I was, clearly Grin

SecretNutellaFix · 14/01/2011 20:36

yabu. I hate people dumping their stuff on the conveyer when I still have a fair amount still in the trolley. So I now conveyer block! I position myself at the top of the conveyor and load it and only when I have 2/3 items left do I wing around to the side to finish. And put a divider downSmile

VivaLeBeaver · 14/01/2011 20:37

YABU nad rude. You wait till the person infront of you has finished. In 20 years of supermarket shopping only one person has done this to me. They'd left a small gap, but not enough and our stuff was touching by the time I'd put some more stuff out and I still had half a trolley left to empty.

You don't gain anything by doing this. Once they've finished and have gone down the other end to pack and then pay you will have plenty of time to put your stuff on. The only thing it does is stress the other person out and make you likely to get into an arguement. If you did it in Morrisons you'd probably be thumped.

LMAO at "you only have to ask nicely". She shouldn't have to ask at all.

Have a Smile as its your first time!

TubbyDuffs · 14/01/2011 20:37

Of course you wait until the person before you's trolley is empty... until then, you stand reading the magazines for free, then you don't have to buy one! DOH

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 14/01/2011 20:37

Haha, I type too slow MsKlo.

Conveyor belt etiquette. Haha.

Some people get so uptight about the smallest things.

MintAeroBar · 14/01/2011 20:37

LOL People do get worked up about the oddest things!

I wouldnt consider it rude I would just think they do things differently to me.

MintAeroBar · 14/01/2011 20:38

xpost Pixie!

VivaLeBeaver · 14/01/2011 20:38

"Surely if there was space on the belt in the first place then the rude woman obviously didn't have much shopping in the first place because face it, those belts aren't huge.

"

But what if there was space on the belt because the woman still had loads of shopping in her trolley?

The polite thing to do is to put a divider downfor the person behind you so they feel comfortable starting to unload.

It IS impolite to ram a divider down before the person in front is ready. They are being served so the belt it theirs.

OP YABU

VivaLeBeaver · 14/01/2011 20:40

I do the magazine reading as well. Its also a good opportunity for remembering the cat food and leaving the trolley there and legging it for cat food. Did that once and some cheeky fecker had moved my trolley to the side and pushed in the queue even though DD was there with the trolley (she was too scared to protest). I soon sorted them out!

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 14/01/2011 20:41

viva from the op, it say's she had a small trolley, some shopping was already on the belt, so that can't leave much left to be put on.

Obviously it would be different if it was a full size trolley, overspilling with stuff.

charliesweb · 14/01/2011 20:41

This is why I internet shop. Grin

bruxeur · 14/01/2011 20:41

Yeah, YABU.

This is the equivalent of tailgating in a traffic jam. Irritating and pointless.

PigValentine · 14/01/2011 20:41

YABU. Why couldn't you wait until she had finished? It wouldn't be any quicker for you. Maybe her initial tone was agressive because she thought you were being rude and trying to rush her through.

MissAnneElk · 14/01/2011 20:42

YABU. It won't get you through the checkout any faster. The only place people ever do this to me is in Aldi. Everyone does it there maybe you should switch supermarkets.

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 20:42

Thank you Pixie and BOF!

Genuinely surprised at the consensus I was BU

Honestly I have always done this and I wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone did it to me.

I had left her space to finish unloading, as I said we both had small trolleys and not much stuff. If she had had full large trolley I would not have started unloading as she would have needed more room.

As it was there was plenty of room for both our shopping.

wizardora · 14/01/2011 20:44

YANBU, I wouldn't mind at all, it saves time! As long as you left her enough space for her shopping what's the problem?
