Rude woman in tesco

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 20:23

This is my first AIBU so please be gentle!

In Tesco earlier. Woman in front of me in queue, unloading her shopping from small trolley. I leave a gap, put a divider on and start unloading my shopping also small trolley. The following then happens:

Her: What do you think you are doing? (aggressive tone)
Me: errr.... unloading my shopping
Her: well I have a full trolley you know
Me: ok will move my stuff down a bit, is not a problem, you only had to ask nicely
Her: silence

So was I BU unloading my shopping before she had finished? Didn't think I was, have done it before and no problems.

So AIBU or was she?

YABU to do it yourself. I don't mind personally, as I'm a slow unloader, but I estimate how much room I need and put the divider up myself. I'd be a bit Hmm if someone tried to do it for me.

BitOfFun · 14/01/2011 20:45

Who knew, eh Toriana? Grin

HelenBa · 14/01/2011 20:47

TorianaTollywobbles "Genuinely surprised at the consensus I was BU"

guess that's why AIBU is useful! :)

conniedescending · 14/01/2011 20:49

yanbu

as long as u leave enough space

i do and dont mind it being done

ignore the other nobbers on thread

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 20:50

Exactly Helen

Really thought I wasn't but obviously I was Grin

Will know to wait next time, and check out others supermarket etiquette next time I am in tesco

You were gracious, she sounded like a burk, however generally I do hold back as they might whip out a 4ft salami. So you were a tad U, yes, but she was worse.

usualsuspect · 14/01/2011 20:56

YABU ...its the unwritten shopping law that you wait until the person in front has finished

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 20:58

Also whoohoo!!

Most number of replies I have had to a thread I have started. Even if most of you think IWBU Smile

Was unaware of the unwritten shopping law, but know now

YABU, but I think you've recognised the error of your ways Wink

Until the person in front of you puts the divider down or has an empty trolley (at which point it is acceptable to tut, sigh and lean across their shopping in an obviously awkward and contrived manner to reach for the divider yourself), the conveyor belt is their property.

conniedescending · 14/01/2011 21:01

noooooooooooooooooooooooo

i really do contest this

the rule is that you put the barrier down at a suitable distance in consideration of the shopper behind

if you are rude and dont then they can do it AS LONG AS they leave enough room or wait until there is enough room for the rest of their shopping

I wonder if there may be a different rule for shopping in Waitrose????

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 21:01

Noted jessikart Wink

I do the same as nutella - the tactical trolley block. I don't move the trolley until I'm almost done loading the belt.

There is an upside to this, the checkout person gets to have a good snurk at the middle class ladies arguing with each other Grin

yabu a little

I would never do that but she was a rude bitch

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 14/01/2011 21:09

The tutting divider sigh. That is Sarahs Rule not Waitrose Rule. As mentioned waaaaaaay back at the start of the thread. Although I do shop at Waitrose. Maybe they have adopted it... Hmm

ledodgy · 14/01/2011 21:09

YY you wait until the person infront has unloaded their shopping. I always unload my shopping then place the divider there myself so the person behind knows they can start unloading.

I'm with Sarh on the putting things on the belt in the right order, non food together, frozens together, fridge stuff together, fragile stuff at the end of each section so the tomatoes don't end up at the bottom of the fridge bag.

I don't want my soap powder in with my ice-lollies, yeeeuck!

I thought it was the law of shopping that everyone did that, never noticed it was just me (and Sarah)

Cain · 14/01/2011 21:19

I think YABU, I would for the sake of argument, wait.

Its really not going to get you through any faster because if the check out person thinks you are being rude and unreasonable s/he will take longer to put your and the shopper in front's things through just to piss you off.

Its only a few seconds in the grand scheme of things anyway.

tallulah · 14/01/2011 21:19

I can't believe you do this often and no-one has complained before. Somebody did it to me once. I can't remember what I said to him but it was along the lines of "do you mind". (In my defence he'd left about a 2 inch gap and I had half a trolley load to unpack).

Why should I have to squash all my shopping up together so that you can unpack? You won't be going through the checkout until I've finished, and if you try to chivvy me through I will slow down.

Very rude.

(and I don't think the woman you hassled was rude at all- why should she have to "ask nicely" when you were the one in the wrong?

LDNmummy · 14/01/2011 21:21

Yes it was somewhat rude on your behalf and I would have been peeved had I been the lady, but I would not have reacted as she did. The fact that you are asking who was right means you didn't mean offence, just weren't aware. And good for you for asking instead of just assuming you did nothing wrong.

TorianaTollywobbles · 14/01/2011 21:30

Thank you LDNmummy

Yes I know it would not have got me through any faster. I just thought because there was room I would start unloading.

I was not trying to rush her.

tallulah- I don't think I was 'hassling' the other woman and as I have said genuinely did not think I was doing anything wrong at the time.

OP posts:
DayShiftDoris · 14/01/2011 21:34

Christ I hope I never get behind her in queue

Not only do I start unloading before the person in front has finished ALL the time!! but I have a 6yr old that comments on what they are buying, leans all over their things to reach the 'next customer' thingy and jumps up and down on the spot.

(Hasten to add I tdon't encourage this behaviour Grin)

If the people in front have any sense they let me go first!

Tiredmumno1 · 14/01/2011 21:40

Op do you think you may have been a bit wrong, now you have had some responses

GandTiceandaslice · 14/01/2011 21:41

I hate it when peopleload their shopping on before I've finished. They won't get anywhere any faster!
It's only happened once where I had to say something. I had a full big trolley & had only loaded about 6 things!
