to be curious to know how many of us are middle class mothers who wear Boden?

I always enjoy the wide cross section of opinions, attitudes and experiences on Mumsnet. But other media seems keen to present Mumsnet as white middle class Boden adorned mothers.

I know I'm not, but how many of us are? Grin

Sorry if this has been asked before, but couldn't find anything in the older threads.

I like Boden because I'm overweight and the dresses are flattering.

I don't think I'm middle class. We rent our house. I'm university educated and I work in the public sector, so will probably be underclass dolescum from March :(

PrincessBoo · 01/01/2011 22:27

meant that ironically by the way, before anyone starts on me...

exexpat · 01/01/2011 22:28

Middle class - undeniably.
White - yes
Mother - yes.

But I have never bought Boden, Cath Kidston or Emma Bridgwater for myself, though I have bought items from the last two as 'typically English' present for friends overseas.

However I do have at least one or two of those things lurking around the house, all of which were presents from my mother. Is she trying to tell me something?

GrizzlyMacDuff · 01/01/2011 22:29

princess but being a home owner these days does not define you necessarily, does it? Many people chose to rent for various reasons. Does choice make you working class? Can you choose to be so? is class about mentality and how we see ourselves rather than social status?

1234ThumbScrew · 01/01/2011 22:32

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_structure_of_the_United_Kingdom] I think this is about right

pagwatch · 01/01/2011 22:33

I have no idea about class,- sometimes posh , sometimes working class. But never Boden. Never.

PrincessBoo · 01/01/2011 22:36

Ah right well taking the wiki article as fact I'd say am between lower middle and middle middle. At the moment...

grizzly we rent because we can't afford to buy. Did everything in wrong order: had child, then got married - now too skint to buy house. Damn!

GrizzlyMacDuff · 01/01/2011 22:38

ok, so on that basis, on the new socio-economic structure being used, what does that mean for full time stay at home mothers or fathers? do they use the position of their partners if they have partners? or the position they were in prior to leaving paid employment? that system is about employment rather than income, is that accurate?

GrizzlyMacDuff · 01/01/2011 22:39

princess i am not saying that you chose to rent, but some people do, so that is not necessarily a factor. If you did it in a different order, you might own your own home, so does that, in your eyes, define your class position? would you be middle class if you had the same as you have now but with your own home?

Lulabel27 · 01/01/2011 22:40

Middle class - yes
White - yes
Boden - never heard of it til joining mn when I found out I was pregnant. Since then I've become a "fit" model for them (try their clothes on for them to test for fit/wearability) and have been converted by their (plainer) items.
Not sure a brand of clothing should define you as a person though and would be disappointed if people made assumptions on my personality/lifestyle based on what brand jumper I wear...

BlessingsGalore · 01/01/2011 22:41

Middle Class: yes
6 figure salary: yes
private schools: yes
Boden: no - george, sports soccer, tesco

Emma Bridgewater: no, but she did give my son her reject items as a Christmas present. A damaged mug for a six year old?!!! Hmm

PrincessBoo · 01/01/2011 22:43

I don't think I actually think of myself in any position really Grizzly, although I do feel at a disadvantage because we have to rent. That said - we had burst pipes and water problems due to the freeze lately and obviously all were sorted at the landlord's expense and not ours so there are some advantages.

Not middle class by any stretch the term middle class screams to me of posh, stuck up, and earning over 150k a year, albeit don't think income is relevant as you can be middle class and skint.

Never wore Boden.

Honeydragon · 01/01/2011 22:44

Well this is what prompted the question, I was told that working in a call centre, my income and the area where I live mean I am not good enough for middle class. But the university I went to and the fact I choose to spend housework leisure time on Mumsnet makes me middle class. The instigators of this debate then downgraded me again when they found out I had a scholarship for the university I attended Hmm Grin

Then you read the DM or watch the Wright Stuff and we come across as terribly educated white middle class folk.

I have yet to figure out what the hell Boden means, but I'm working on it!

Ariesgirl · 01/01/2011 22:46

I wouldn't know where to get any Boden to be perfectly honest. Before I joined MN I had never heard of them.

I am an ex middle class now impoverished person who wears whatever can be found in a sale. Fat Face and White Stuff is particularly nice.

Bechka · 01/01/2011 22:47

Middle class: yes
Mother: yes
Boden wearer: nooooooooooo, never, ever, ever, nooooooooooo!

Ariesgirl · 01/01/2011 22:47

And surely middle class is more a state of mind than any figures in a bank account.

DontCallMeBaby · 01/01/2011 22:49

Definitely white* middle class, and I like a bit of Boden to break up the Fat Face, Gap, Next and random crap from the supermarket.

I have insufficient children to properly fulfil the media stereotype of Mumsnet-mum, I think two is the bare minimum and three better.

  • or a pale shade of Celtic blue
Honeydragon · 01/01/2011 22:49

If it is a state of mind then I am now a member of the ruling classes.

OP posts:
1234ThumbScrew · 01/01/2011 22:51

If you are a sahm/f then you base yourself on your partners job. That makes me middle middle.

PrincessBoo · 01/01/2011 22:53

Anyone ever read Jilly Cooper's 'Class'? I read it aeons ago but I remember thinking she had it spot on. Doea anyone remember that documentary about those sweary upper class folk? What was it called again?

GrizzlyMacDuff · 01/01/2011 22:55

After reading the definitions in full, i am torn between middle middle class, lower middle class, spiritual meritocracy and skilled working class Grin. Although, i think I am defined as lower middle class purely by the fact that I say 'pardon' when I mishear/fail to hear something someone says. If wiki says it, must be true. I am now defined.

Although DH and I have been having a debate about our own individual class identity and whether my class status is defined by his own position. Can he be one class and me a completely different one? Hmm perhaps I should pass him the boden catalogue.

SnotandBothered · 01/01/2011 22:55

So based on the Wiki definition I am textbook middle middle class, I am white (based on skin colour not wikipedia :)) and the odd boden denim skirt may have found it's way into my home. However watching pennies at moment so:

Buying: High Street and Cos for a treat
Mending: Old Nicole Farhi dress and Missioni jumper (bought in sample sale)
Dreaming of: Lanvin
