The men in question are Elton John and David Furnish.

It feels wrong on so many levels.

I am quite alarmed by the OP being a teacher. Let's hope she leaves her views at the door of the school. I wouldn't like my DD being subjected to that nonsense.

Surrogacy is an advancement in science that raises many moral issues, one of which is the "right" of a couple to a particular sort of lifestyle regardless of the wider implications for the life of the child. We need to address these moral issues in a sensible debate free from the sort of hysterical reaction that accompanies these sorts of headlines and to bear in mind that the quality of life of the child should come first.

"Diddl, why isn't it homophobic to think that two men shouldn´t have a child?"

I don´t think they should as they can´t do it naturally-for want of a better term.

Does that make me homophobic?

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 28/12/2010 17:26

was there the same fuss with sarah jessica parker?

Didn't Sarah in the bible give birth by a miracle at the age of about 150 though? (Going slightly off topic here!)

hatesponge · 28/12/2010 17:28

I don't see how a child with loving parent/s (irrespective of gender and sexual orientation) could have a poor quality of life.

and diddl: there are plenty of heterosexual couples who can't have children naturally due to fertility issues...does that mean they shouldn't have children as well?!

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 28/12/2010 17:30

sjp is about 150 isn't she?

funmother · 28/12/2010 17:31

Oh yes, because all the heterosexuals get it right? THEY dont abuse/beat/kill their children do they..oh hold on a minute.....

What matters is that David and Elton are able to love and support their child, just like any other parent should. I dont understand the problem.

Homophobia is still rife i see!

I feel really happy for EJ and DF. They have spoken about their desire to have a family for years, and have explored various options to make it happen. I think it's great they finally got the child they so wanted. Good luck to them.

That kid will have a great life.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/12/2010 17:40

I have no objection to them having a child using surrogacy. Let's face it, they've got to leave their money to someone when they shuffle off the mortal coil!

Realistically, gay people are just as capable or incapable as heterosexuals as parents. Some are crap, some are great.

Age isn't really an issue. My DH is 20 years older than me. We had DD when a lot of men his age were becoming grandparents. It's really not an issue now - it may be in 30 years when he dies but that's actually quite a long way away. Young people also die :(

However it shakes down the kid will still be mortified by his parents at 13. If a child comes into this world and is loved, constantly and sincerely, what does it matter who by?

Well for me, yes, unless they are using their own eggs & sperm.

diddl - so I assume, given the need you would turn down chemotherapy etc because it's not natural? Hmm

Science has provided us with opportunities that would never happen naturally. All of us. Even I dare say it - you have taken advantage of scientific developments. Which are a tad unnatural. Ever been on a plane?

diddl · 28/12/2010 18:06

"diddl, how about if a lesbian and gay man conceive naturally (ish)?"

Do you mean actually have sex & live together as a couple?
