To feel smug about all the idiots stuck in the snow...

It's my birthday tomo. Wanted to pop to shops alone (luxury!)to buy a new dress to wear for my meal out tonight.
But as I'm breastfeeding, I decided early this morning to forgoe the dress, incase I got stuck.
Have now decided to cancel meal as roads impassable
I'm hearing on news about gridlock all over London, car parks at bluewater, lakeside etc all jammed no one is going anywhere!
I feel smug for being home, warm, safe with my children!!!!

I think the OP has namechanged and is busy sticking the boot in on this thread like many others

We went shopping today (how dreadful of us) but I CHECKED the weather - on the BBC - before we left, looking at the next 24 hour breakdown bit and NO snow was forecast AT ALL where we are. In fact, first thing this morning, this area had no snow forecast for the next 5 days. We got to our destination, bought a few things, then went in a covered mall for an hour .... by the time we came out we'd had heavy snow and it was getting worse. What's normally 20 minutes home took 3 hours and was truly scary, sliding across the road a couple of times despite extremely careful, steady and slow driving. Needless to say there was no grit, but the snow was heavy enough that I doubt it would have made much difference anyway.

Not being complete idiots and as we live at the top of a hill, decided to park in a near-ish level road but snow was so deep still got stuck and were only finally able to park it somewhere safe thanks to a very kind man who came out of his house to help dig us out. I'd already run (up the snowy hill) to get our shovel from home and had fallen over in the process, hurting myself.

Thank God we were lucky enough to actually get home however, unlike the poor people who are still stuck .... especially the elderly and/or those with children. Whilst there may be some genuine idiots out there who despite warnings for their area have gone out nonetheless on non-essential trips, I expect that the vast majority of people who've got stuck today were taken unawares. Last time we had snow, the forecast was skewed then too ..... so I wonder, how else are you supposed to go about your daily business, with an eye on the weather, when you can't rely upon forecasts ? I know it's not an exact science, but if you check you've done all you can ..... short of never venturing out at all in the Winter.

Yep scottishmummy thankfully there are two other cars also broken down with her (well not thankfully for them obviously but you know what i mean!) so she won't keel over without anyone knowing, but even so I'm so worried for her.

coolascucumber · 18/12/2010 22:52

We only had light snow forecast for later in the day so husband was happy to set out at 1.30pm for a round trip of 1 1/4 hours to collect me from hospital after my op - only other option was a bus that might not have been running followed by 2 train journeys - not great after a general anaesthetic. I worried the whole way for him getting to me and all the way home getting back to the kids. We got home at 6.30pm. Not a day that anyone should be feeling smug.

scottishmummy · 18/12/2010 22:55

oh poor you never nice to know loved one distressed and cannot get to them.hope your mum ok

lololizzy · 18/12/2010 22:57

MANY employers will not pay if you cannot get to work due to snow. And most of us simply cannot afford to not go. For me...not for Christmas money just for my day to day survival. I don't expect others to bail me out if i don't get paid. I really do NOT have a choice. My cousin is a childrens cancer nurse. She also does not get paid if she doesnt go cos of snow. She will always risk bad weather because of the nature of her job, not just her salary.
For many people the weather only got very bad after they had been out for a while.
Not stupidity at all...

pigletmania · 18/12/2010 23:02

Oh no lololizzy that is Blush, that has been a dread of mine, being stuck in traffic and needing to wee. Try getting a shewee, you can get them from amazon. Its times like that when you wish you were a man Grin.

ItsMeMo · 18/12/2010 23:18

Just heard on the radio that so far today there have been 3 deaths due to the weather. One in a sledging accident and two from car accidents.

But you go ahead and feel smug Sad

ItsMeMo · 18/12/2010 23:18

Why hasn't this thread been deleted yet?

scottishmummy · 18/12/2010 23:19

does it merit deletion?why

JarethTheGoblinKing · 18/12/2010 23:19

Why should it be deleted?

ItsMeMo · 18/12/2010 23:28

I would have thought the OP would have requested it to be deleted. She has no support and has clearly offended lots of people.

0Lucylabia · 18/12/2010 23:29

Nobody, is ever essential! Just who has been blowing smoke po your bum??

StrawberryTot · 18/12/2010 23:30

Blinkin Heck!!! where does everybody live on here that they can not get to work/ shops, we woke up to a shit load of snow this morning and after a family effort of some serious deicing and desnowing the car the other half managed to get to work, i however indulged in some sledging with the dc's might as well enjoy it.

PocketMouse · 18/12/2010 23:32

0Lucy - que? Can you re-write that post so it makes sense?

Strawberry - well we can get to the shops as we have a sled we can drag DS on, but it's a good 30 min walk in this snow.

Work is 50 min drive for me and a 2 hour bus/train commute for DP in NORMAL weather.. no fucking way are we going to attempt it on Monday morning if this snow's still hanging around.

scottishmummy · 18/12/2010 23:34

lol,if every poster with no support and offensive post was deleted mn would be gie empty

PocketMouse · 18/12/2010 23:34

StrawberryTot · 18/12/2010 23:41

0Lucylabia · 18/12/2010 23:42

It never ceases to amaze me, just how vitriolic and downright mean you all can be, I'm sure that the op has been misrepresented and that you are all are over-reacting to this post. FFS, you all cannot surely be Daily Flail readers??

PocketMouse · 18/12/2010 23:43

HO HO HO...
