Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

It's all relative.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/12/2010 14:47

YAsoNBU - if size 16 is now average for UK woman (not saying that is healthy etc but apparently that is the average) then a large most definitely isn't a 12 is it!

MarniesMummy · 15/12/2010 14:48

No, it's not large at all, unless you're a celeb.
In the celeb world I'd assume they'd liken a size 12 to an elephant.

freddiestarratemyhandbag · 15/12/2010 14:48

I bought size 14 spanx labelled as XL!!!

As if people who need spanx are tiuny or something

TrillianAstra · 15/12/2010 14:48

These terms are relative. The small coffee in Starbucks is called 'tall'. It's larger than the other sizes they are offering you.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 14:49

It IS all relative and if you compare the measurements of an average size 12 garment now with one from 20 years ago, the difference is quite amazing!

20 years ago, a size 12 had a 26" waist. Now it is often a 30" waist. Suggesting that today's size 12 is what used to be a size 16.

To put it into even more perspective, I am a modern size 12-14, depending on cut. I recently bought a top (made in China) but had to buy the XXL size(!) to fit.

A size 12 in America = a size 16 in the UK anyway - are you sure it isn't an American site?

wussbird · 15/12/2010 14:51

Marnies you make a good point. On further investigation, they advertise that Sara Cox wore their maternity clothes, so they obviously are living in the surreal world of celebrity sizes.

It's all relative isn't is (as Trill said), but as a much larger than a 12 it does make me laugh when I pick up an XL top and it's tiny - I do think XL on who?? - even a model would burst these seams!

snowflake69 · 15/12/2010 14:52

Agree with thumbplumpudding. I do think it is quite a large size compared to in the past. My mum used to wear a size 10 even 10 years ago she has put on a little weight and now she is a size 6 - 8. Sizes have changed and got really big nowadays.

wussbird · 15/12/2010 14:54

plum I'm pretty sure it's using UK sizing

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 15/12/2010 14:55

I'm a 12 and I'm quite large!

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 14:57

Fair enough - but that is still on the large size, compared with "olden days" Xmas Grin

I still have some of my size 10 and 12 clothes from when I was much younger (hoarder) - they're very scarily small!

MJB66 · 15/12/2010 14:59

Ive got a size 12 pair of jeans up in my loft circa 1982 ish, there is noway I would be able to get in them now, not even with a shoe horn, Im currently a size 13 in 2010 sizes.

NinkyNonker · 15/12/2010 15:01

Depends on how tall you are. I'm tall and long limbed,as I'm still carrying a bit of baby weight I'm a 14, 16 in some shops and don't really look large. Someone shorter might. But no, I don't think a 12 is large now.

ChippingIn · 15/12/2010 15:03

I have to agree that a size 10 now is much bigger than a size 10, 20 years ago - which is all the more fucking depressing....

TrillianAstra · 15/12/2010 15:05

"they advertise that Sara Cox wore their maternity clothes"

Anyone want to join me in surmising that they don't want women who are actually large to wear their clothes?

bruffin · 15/12/2010 15:07

I used to be an old size 8, it was a 22 inch waist. A size 12 now is the same as an old 16,

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 15:08

I believe that a quick read of this will enlighten us as to the aims of this company!

It ain't for plebs, that's for sure! Xmas Grin

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 15:10

NOT that I am for one second suggesting that anyone on this thread is a pleb! God, I wish I'd put my brain in gear first sometimes Xmas Blush

ChippingIn · 15/12/2010 15:11

PMSL TW Grin

I was more upset that being FAT means I must be a pleb - but there you go! Grin

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 15:14

I am an idiot - I was working on the Kensington High St/Galerie Lafayette location, didn't really think it through at all. Sorry! Xmas Blush some more.

DurhamDurham · 15/12/2010 15:16

I'm only 5 foot 2 and I think I would look large as a size 12. I'm size 8/10 and look healthy not skinny. I used to be skinny and think I have now found a happy medium.

So ys, it's all relative. I have friends who are 12's, 14's etc and they look fab, it just wouln't suit me.

FingonTheValiantReindeer · 15/12/2010 15:18

God, I've put on tons of weight during pregnancy and dream of being a 12 again. I def didn't used to look large (do now though). I'm now really depressed by the fact that it's bigger than it used to be :(

They certainly aren't aiming at the average Mum!
