Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

"I think you should be really really to tall to be a helthy weight at size 12..."

Too tall, ILikeMilk? Too tall for whom? For you? Piss off. I love how people get all sensitive if someone's rude about how wide someone is, but feel they can be as rude as they like about how tall they are.

I am 5'11 btw.

ILikeMilk · 16/12/2010 14:23

I know what you mean Menagerie. I do often buy clothes size 8, but no way do I look like I am a size 8. Think I look more like a 12 despite fitting into 8-10 size clothes... Trying to lose some weight too right now.

ILikeMilk · 16/12/2010 14:26

I did not mean "too tall". I typed "to" by mistake before tall, as I am typing and feeding a baby at the same time. I wish I was 5'11, honestly! What I was trying to say is that if you are tall, size 12 wont be overweight, but if you are 5'5 as me, it is on a larger side.

wubblybubbly · 16/12/2010 14:29

I have very broad shoulders and a huge rib cage. Even when I was a size 8 in jeans (about 20 years ago mind you) I was never less than a 12 in my top. I looked bloody awful too.

At 5'6" I find I look my best at the top end of my healthy BMI range, that's about 11 stone for me and usually around a size 14.

I really couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks.

BlueberryPancake · 16/12/2010 14:29

I always thought that 8-10 was small, 12-14 Medium, 16 + large. It depends on so much though, the size of your boobs, the natural width of your hips, where you carry your weight. I'm streight up down with small boobs, 5'7, and I am 10.5 stones and size 12 or 14 depending on where I shop. I do feel that I should lose a stone, although I'm not 'overweight' medically, as I have a lot of weight around my tummy which is not healthy. I have a friend who always needs size 16 tops and 12 bottoms, as she has huge boobs. I think that there are no standards in shops in the UK (M&S size are completely different from Next's for example). I'm a 10 in M&S and 14 at Next.

luceeloo · 16/12/2010 14:29

I'm 5'5 and 7st 12lb, BMI of 18.3 apparently. I HATE IT. I look gaunt, have small boobs (nothing wrong with 32b I know but I would much prefer to look more curvy). I want curves!!!

noonar · 16/12/2010 14:29

hmm... i would think of a size 14-16/18 large. 8-10 small. 10-12/14 medium.

funny you should say that about 'old' sizing. i can usually fit into size 10 trousers. in next/ M and S the size 10 is pretty huge. in GAP i'm a UK 8!!! yet i am a pretty robust build. i wish i had some old jeans to compare with! i find hennes very small, though . am a 14 in there.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 16/12/2010 14:33

I think it would depend on your height. A size 12 for a 5ft tall woman would be quite large but a size twelve on a 6ft woman would be very small.

Longtinsellyjosie · 16/12/2010 14:35

Ah, sorry I went all Angry then! If you were 5'11 you'd be amazed how rude people can be about it at times...

Chandon · 16/12/2010 14:49

Hello Longtinseljosie.

I am just over 6ft, and wear a size 12, sometimes 14 (if I want a nice loose fit) and I am slim and a healthy weight.

I am fed up of people saying I am too tall, or too big, or too fat (that is all those people who say 12-14 is too fat at any height).

Shall we flounce together on our amazonian legs?

Odysseus · 16/12/2010 14:51

I'm 5ft9 and still seem to tower over everyone....is everyone getting shorter????

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 16/12/2010 15:02

Don't know about that. wehn I was younger I seemed to be the only tall girl around and now I know loads of us. All th eteens I know are all leggy too

SantasMooningArse · 16/12/2010 15:04

Well i;ve just gone from a size 20 to a 14 and still losing so on balance for me- this is pretty small!

But the slimmest I ahve ever been is a 12 and i'm neitehr short nor delicately built so that's absolutely fine; bones sticking out in the right places etc. I wouldn;t want to be any smaller tbh, not could i possibly maintain it.

For some 12 is too big for eprsonal atstes (BIL is like that- and not strangley siongle at 37) but it is not large. Especially if like me you ahev 4 kids and hip bones so wide that small ships can pass through unhinderd Wink

Ephiny · 16/12/2010 15:08

It also depends on what you mean by 'size 12', this varies massively between different brands and styles. Some of my clothes are size 8 and fit comfortably, but I find some size 12s a bit tight. It's not a fixed thing.

SheWillBeLoved · 16/12/2010 15:16

I'm a size 12 in most places now now, smallest I can ever remember being. I'm convinced I was born a size 18 Xmas Grin Still losing weight, but people are horrified when I tell them I have another 1.5 stone to lose. BIL saw me the other day and apparently ran home and told my sister that I need 'a pan of stew' as my collarbones were protruding so much Xmas Hmm

I'm not small at all. Still have plenty to spare and lose, but I suppose to them I look tiny compared to the size 20 I was in February.

It does vary though, I find in certain shops like Monsoon, or Next, I can go up to a size 14, yet I have a maxi dress from Dorothy Perkins that is a size 10.

Lotster · 16/12/2010 15:22

YANBU

I'm 5ft 9 and a happy size 12. I think I look a bit ill when I'm a 10.

It all depends on height. Same as weight does - I get so annoyed when I hear friends of completely different heights (and builds) comparing weight.

But then I get really cross when I see articles claiming to help you "get the body" of a particular celebrity, when apart from having the same genes as them it's nigh on impossible...aargh drives me mad!

putthekettleon · 16/12/2010 15:23

oh god you've all depressed me, I just bought a lovely pair of size 12 jeans in topshop today and was feeling all smug (still losing baby weight). I see I still have a long way to go before the MN jury classes me as slim...

Lotster · 16/12/2010 15:29

Putthekettleon - from what I've read of the thread most seem to be agreeing 12 is pretty slim! Bet you look great in your jeans, I love that feeling the first time you feel good in a pair post baby Xmas Smile

Lotster · 16/12/2010 15:30

p.s. agree with poeple saying brands vary so much sometimes it's daft, especially as an internet shopper.

I have clothes in my wardrobe labelled 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16 from varying brands which all fit me...

Ephiny · 16/12/2010 15:31

Size 12 in topshop is definitely quite slim -haven't been there for a while, but seem to remember their sizes were all ridiculously tiny!

saintknickerless · 16/12/2010 15:31

I'm a size 12. YANBU.

SheWillBeLoved · 16/12/2010 15:34

You're right Ephiny, Topshop is one of those place were I go up a dress size or two. So putthekettleon, go on, run off and be smug ya skinny cow Xmas Grin

BreconBeBuggered · 16/12/2010 15:37

True enough with the size/brand differences. I've had a look and I'm a 14 today. Tomorrow I'll be a 10 bottom/12 top, till I change to go out in the evening when I'll be a 16.

I honestly think that most women my age (40s) look a bit haggard if they're a size 8 or smaller. A bit of chub fills out the wrinkles so nicely, dontcherknow.

FellatioNelson · 16/12/2010 15:39

Skinny shallow fashionistas think a size 12 is positively enormous. I think it's a nice size, and if you are tall then it is really quite slim. And even if you are short it's still perfectly fine.

putthekettleon · 16/12/2010 15:42

Grin thanks, they are quite high waisted so do suck in my baby belly rather fabulously! DD just managed to smear carrot puree all over them though, ruining the new look somewhat...
