...not really family viewing? I've barely watched x-factor in my life but I had thought everyone said that, for all its faults, it was something that had got families watching telly together. I was expecting wholesome boy bands and gutsy young girls. Clearly I'm naive and a prude.

amijee can a woman not dance in anything other than her underware? are there not many unrestrictive fabrics out there to choose from?

TheCrackFox · 11/12/2010 23:06

I just supervised a school disco and no, actually, they were not dancing like that.

"instead of getting so het up about offcom and all the rest of it, you should be giving your kids self confidence, self esteem, self respect and respect for others."

I have complained to Ofcom but will alo be taching my children self respect yadda, yadda.

Why do you think we can't do both?

HerBeatitude · 11/12/2010 23:06

Self confidence, self esteem adn self respect doesn't protect a girl from being raped or assaulted by a man or boy who has been groomed to see her as a fuck toy.

And what about those girls who aren't brought up to have self-confidence, self-esteem and self-respect? If they are not getting that from their own upbringings, do we as a society not owe them an environment where they can discover some, instead of re-inforcing the lack of self-respect, self-esteem and self-confidence?

It takes a village to raise a child and if the rest of the village is busy wanking, the raising of that child is going to be heavily encumbered.

"Year ago Kylie was on CD:UK promoting Spinning Around (quite a sexy video), she performed wearing jeans and a vest. Rihanna and Christina could have done similar but chose to do soft porn instead. No one held a gun to their heads."

I don't think Xtina wearing jeans and t-shirt would have done much to promote Burlesque would it?

Plus it's alot easier to dance in teeny outfits- it's why ballerinas don't wear fleeces and dungarees and why you don't do the tango in burka.

catsinthejinglebelfry · 11/12/2010 23:07

Whoops I've come on to this thread a bit late. Could someone please explain to me, succinctly, what happened that got everyone so agitated?

FWIW, I saw 3/4 of tonight's Xfactor. DS (8) is on a sleepovr so may or may not have seen it. Which bit should I have banned him from? It all looked like popmusic to me, most of it a bit meh.

corlan · 11/12/2010 23:07

I asked because I don't get how you don't get it.

amijee · 11/12/2010 23:07

A woman can dance in anything she chooses to. That's the whole point! apparently, it's you lot that think underwear is disallowed.

oneortwo · 11/12/2010 23:08

I've seen Burlesque shows, the performers spend most of the show covered up. It would be easy to do burlesque STYLE costumes without the nudity

those dancers were not dressed in burlesque style at all

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 11/12/2010 23:08

And rape and assault is about control and violence. Not sex.

HerBeatitude · 11/12/2010 23:09

women have been viewed in this way throughout the ages HerBeatitude

nothing new there...

Actualy, slavery has happened throughout the ages, but we decided to get rid of it. We can get rid of the view of women as fuck-toys as well, and promote the view of us as full human beings.

As for saying we can't affect the media - of course we can. That's why organisations like OFCOM exist. They do focus groups and viewer and listener research all the time which has a huge effect on the media. Our consumer power alone affects the media.

FrustratedHippy · 11/12/2010 23:09

amijee ???/ do you have teenagers? I have three they all love to dance - none o them like that. They respect themselves

TheCrackFox · 11/12/2010 23:09

"I don't think Xtina wearing jeans and t-shirt would have done much to promote Burlesque would it?"

A truly talented performer would be able to work her way round the problem. But Xtina has being doing the same old tired Diirty stuff for over a decade. Yawn. She is a hasbeen.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 11/12/2010 23:09

Oneortwo-I do agree with you there

oneortwo · 11/12/2010 23:10

don't know what ballets/tango shows you've been to but I've never seen them dresses like porn stars!

amijee · 11/12/2010 23:11

"I asked because I don't get how you don't get it"

So... I dont agree with you so I must be a man.

MsSparkle · 11/12/2010 23:11
you would have prefered this?
MollieO · 11/12/2010 23:11

Doesn't anyone want to have a stab at answering my question of 23:05:12? [fbear]

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 11/12/2010 23:12

My point was leotards (which don't leave much to the imagination) are most comfertable to dance iN

amijee · 11/12/2010 23:12

Hippy - my kids are young.

I dance like that and most people I know do as well.

MsSparkle · 11/12/2010 23:12

TheCrackFox did you miss the whole Back to Basics album era? Don't let your hate for her show off your ignorance.

sorky · 11/12/2010 23:12

I have complained to OFCOM. The content was not appropriate for pre-watershed/family viewing imo.

ellesbelles79 · 11/12/2010 23:12

I think you'll find that slavery does still exist in many parts of the world...

And comparing some women dancing around in their undies (by their own choice) to slavery is a little over the top IMO

You will not affect the media - these half naked pop stars etc are big business. In fact you will all probably complain...and then there'll be some article in the paper about all the complaints...and then MORE people will become interested in getting a glimpse of rihanna's crotch! So more publicity for her then...

Rihanna 1 General public 0

MollieO · 11/12/2010 23:13

I reckon if CA had been dressed like that video there would be less comments on what she was wearing and more comments about her singing. I wouldn't have recognised her as the same person if I hadn't heard her voice.
