...and have rotten eggs and tomatos thrown at them.
How dare they go on holiday and be allowed to have christmas presents etc
They should live on bread and dripping.

SirBoobAlot · 03/12/2010 23:57

But how do you know who "legitimately" needs it? Do you have x-ray vision? Are mental health issues included within your personal boundaries?

If person A was sat down, on a good day, having taken multiple pain killers and worked themselves up for the previous two weeks to going out, you wouldn't know they was ill. You would see a young woman with a toddler, maybe looking a bit tired, and a bit ditzy because she forgets her words, but all the same, making conversation, laughing and seemingly "normal".

If you saw person B, they would be bed-bound, unable to wash themselves, unable to eat, having lost so much weight because they have lacked the strength to do so much as swallow or chew, unable to talk on somedays, nearly crying with frustration when they can talk, because they can't remember what they were going to say, but not crying, because its just too paiinful. If they do manage to get out of bed, they have to be carried, or crawl along the floor.

Would you say A was not legitimate?

GotArt · 04/12/2010 00:04

You and I wouldn't necessarily know, however, their doctors would vouch for them for the social worker to fill in the forms and not commit fraud. I also wouldn't know if that seemingly tired mother was on benefits. Your argument is weak.

MerrilyDefective · 04/12/2010 00:10

OF FUCKING COURSE THEIR DRS WOULD VOUCH FOR THEM.
Why would YOU know someone elses circumstances?
NOT your business.

GotArt · 04/12/2010 00:20

I also wouldn't judge someone's case that I didn't know. However, in my sisters and her partners case, I know they do not need it. They need to turn off Jerry Springer and get off the couch and get a job. She won't even get her highschool equivalency because its too much work, right from the horses mouth, no fat joke intended.

LadyGolden · 04/12/2010 00:20

SirBoobAlot

Perfectly put, There are so many people suffering with Bi-Polar syndrome (me included) and people suffering with clinical depression that suffer every day just to get out of bed, brush their teeth and walk out the door. Because they don't have physical disabilities they are considered nuts or lazy.. It's disgraceful

LadyGolden · 04/12/2010 00:22

Horses aren't fat... Xmas Shock

GotArt · 04/12/2010 00:26

In Canada you call someone a horse, it means they're fat.

GotArt · 04/12/2010 00:27

Same as calling someone a cow.

Morloth · 04/12/2010 00:29

You can't put benefit claimants in stocks.

Either it will taste all ashy because of all the fags they smoke or because they all only eat junk food and are horribly fat you would have to stand there for ages skimming that brown stuff off they top. You would never get a clear consomme.

Also it would be really hard to get enough carrots.

GotArt · 04/12/2010 00:32

lol Xmas Grin

MerrilyDefective · 04/12/2010 00:36

I don't live in Canada....you cow.

Reading the op I realise this is a piss take but there are some who would say "Fair point, well made".

Now yes, there are an awful lot of people who take the piss but can I give my experience?

I have worked hard all my life except for two periods during this recession when I was made redundant.

The first was for 9 and a half weeks, the second for 7 weeks and for me, the horror of being 'out of work' was enough to keep me job hunting.

To have been put in stocks and whatever would have driven me to suicide had I not had to provide for dependants.

What sort of time scale are you allowing?

Is there a gradient of missiles?

1-6months - soggy sponges.
6-12 months - rotting veg
12 - 24 months - rotten eggs
24+ months - stones.

What are we talking?

GotArt · 04/12/2010 01:27

I'd go with water balloons instead of soggy sponges; sponges carry bacteria and no one needs an unnecessary rash.

Trop · 04/12/2010 01:39

Hmm good point.

Trop · 04/12/2010 01:43

And how often are we talking?

Daily? Weekly or to coincide with signing on days?

Monthly might be fairer considering not all employers want you to start straight away or does an offer of employment give exclusion?

Perhaps a sliding scale might be better, more often the longer you are out of work?

Rachy91 · 04/12/2010 03:01

merrilydefective by name...

you know people like you make me so angry, just the ignorance and snobbery in what your saying!!

i HATE having to claim benefits but for now i have no choice, im a student living 150 miles from home, im having to take a gap year from my studies as i cannot afford childcare and the babys father and his family all work full time.

im NOT a scounger, a scally, lazy or a fraud, im doing something i hate just the thought of doing to do whats best for my child. fact is i need to provide for her and when its possible to get a job i will but until then ive got no choice, without benefits i cant pay for child care and without child care i cant work. its a visious circle.

think on before you shout out

and cheer up fgs!

GotArt · 04/12/2010 03:28

No one is saying you are a scounger. I don't think Merrilydefective is being ignorant. Its a bit tongue and cheek, but lets be honest, there are plenty of people that are on welfare that really shouldn't be. Have you read all the posts? I'm at the point right now I feel like reporting my sister because I know she is abusing the system cause she is point blankly lazy. You are using a system designed precisely for its purpose; to help those who need it and you need it right now and you shouldn't hate having to do it.

GotArt · 04/12/2010 03:58

Trop Offer of employment definitely excludes one. Maybe bi-monthly otherwise its a lot of paper work. Xmas Grin
