Before I was on DLA, if you'd have told me that there is a Christmas "bonus" for being disabled, my mouth would have hit the floor.
Now, being disabled, you suddenly realise how actually you do have to pay out a lot more in winter. Taxis cost twice as much because they have to drive more cautiously in the weather. And if you're having to do more / longer taxi trips, or pay for more petrol, because you can't walk as far in the bad weather, it adds up again.
I don't feel ashamed of being disabled, or of being on benefits. I used to. Mainly because there is this big image of "BENEFITS SCROUNGERS!" wherever you turn. The fact that actually for some people, they don't have a choice - if they want to live, they have to claim benefits; that seems to go totally under the carpet.
Try living in the life for a day of anyone with a condition who claims DLA, and then come and complain about ten pounds. I'd quite happily pay every single penny back, with interest, that the state have given me, if I could have my health back.
Fuckwits.
