elc have removed the pig from the happy land farm set as it may offend some religious groups!- i.e muslim and jewish. so am i wrong to suggest that maybe we should not have farm sets because it could offend veggies, the cows could offend hindus and maybe the sheep could offend the welsh???

this is bloody stupid... our town renamed christmas as fucking winterval!!!!!

nappyaddict · 17/11/2010 03:37

Only read the OP but surely these religious groups don't object to the live animal which a farm set is portraying. They only object to the killing of and eating said animal?

Official Word : ELC is a truly global brand, which means we need to be aware of the full range of customer expectations and cultural differences. The decision to remove the pig from our Goosefeather farm set was taken in reaction to customer feedback in some parts of the world.

We recognise that pigs are familiar farm animals - especially for our UK customers. Taking on board all the customer feedback, we have taken the decision to reinstate the pig and to no longer sell the set in those international markets where it might create an issue. Any customers who have bought Goosefeather Farm in the last few months will be able to order a pig free of charge to complete their set via our website in the coming weeks.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.

EvilEyeButterPie · 17/11/2010 10:19

How on earth is PC a bad thing????????????

So now, not offending people is bad? So by that token then, that riduculous outcry about maybe three muslims burning a poppy was PC gone mad too, surely?

Or is PC only a bad thing when protecting other people?

AnnieLobeseder · 17/11/2010 10:32

PC is a bad thing when someone decides for a group of people, without even consulting them, that they should be offended by something. And then taking away the object causing this imaginary offence, leaving loads of people very angry and going WTF? And directing their anger, incorrectly, at the 'offended' group.

chaya5738 · 17/11/2010 10:33

Exactly A1980, which is exactly why ELC decided to drop the pig - so people in the Middle East would buy it.

I will say it again, it was a commercial decision by ELC not because the Muslim and Jewish communities in the UK acted all offended and put pressure on the ELC to drop the toy and thus ruin British children's lives.

rdmommy · 17/11/2010 10:46

just to re-iterate, my op was directed at how stupid elc was not that muslims or jews were to blame for such stupidity. I don't regularly use mumsnet and therefore i'm not 'in' with all the popular or not so popular sayings. altho i am grateful someone started a thread about this thread to help me study the accepted terminology on these chat rooms.

Cream then jam, you weirdos, assuming it's clotted cream . I can sort of see that if you had wussy non-clotted cream you might need to put the jam on first.

chaya5738 · 17/11/2010 10:51

I think "pc gone mad" is always going to land you in hot water on MN rdmommy

I still don't think this was a "PC" decision in this case though - just a straight up and down commercial one.

rdmommy · 17/11/2010 10:53

you're probably very right chaya

SeaGreen · 17/11/2010 10:59

winterval!!! wtf.
i'm not even christian but that is just a big SPOILSPORT word.

AnnieLobeseder · 17/11/2010 11:00

No-one thought you were blaming the Muslims or Jews, rd. But apparently Netmums and some posters on the Daily Wail website are blaming them, which is a horrible results of this.

SeaGreen · 17/11/2010 11:04

EvilEyeButterPie- not offending people is a good thing PROVIDED those people are acting reasonably.

but the point is that
(a) too often the taking offense bit is assumed on behalf of a group that has not spoken up about it (though knowing some people, i don't rule out the fact that secretly they aren't pleased- i know-and wish i didnt- people who get upset if their children like stuffed toy dogs or peppa pig). if they've got the sense to keep it to themselves,no reason why other people should presume to speak for them.
(b) even if some people have spoken up, there are plenty of people sitting around to take offence at every little thing. where does it end? so it's good they've reinstated it- this over-PC madness has to stop somewhere.

ccpccp · 17/11/2010 11:04

Your post was fine rdmommy.

AIBU is always prone to a little intimidation and bullying, dont take it personally.

chaya5738 · 17/11/2010 11:08

Oh FGS seagreen, they didn't remove the pig to be "PC". It was a commercial decision so they could sell the toy in the Middle East.

This has nothing to do with "PC-ness" and avoiding offense at all.

rdmommy · 17/11/2010 11:09

ccpccp thanks for that, i'm not bothered, just wanted to make sure people knew i wasn't out there beating minorities with a stick because of the pig thing!! Grin and i use the term 'i am a christian' very loosely indeed!!!

OP posts:
rdmommy · 17/11/2010 11:15

and what was said about it being appropriate to remove the pig in the middle east, it is. but the uk is multi-cultural and i'm sure people that have moved here have come for those reasons the majority of uk residents are accepting of each race, creed religion etc and thrive within such a diverse populus.

that said i couldn't believe it when i was in toys r us and they sold mcdonalds restaurant kits- now thats a different thread altogether!

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 17/11/2010 11:16

Chaya, seagreen and I (I'm making assumptions for seagreen) aren't necessarily talking about this situation, we're explaining to evilpie why PC isn't always a good thing. In general.

For example, someone might ban cream teas because Riven gets offended by cream on top!

OP posts:
chaya5738 · 17/11/2010 11:23

Annie Seagreen said "so it's good they've reinstated it- this over-PC madness has to stop somewhere"

thus why I was reiterating the point that "uninstating" the pig wasn't about being PC. Seagreen was actually talking about this situation.

Am signing off this thread. Have wasted enough time on here already Grin
