elc have removed the pig from the happy land farm set as it may offend some religious groups!- i.e muslim and jewish. so am i wrong to suggest that maybe we should not have farm sets because it could offend veggies, the cows could offend hindus and maybe the sheep could offend the welsh???

this is bloody stupid... our town renamed christmas as fucking winterval!!!!!

We have the farm, with the pig. The dog chewed the pig. He clearly was upset with the pig. He is neither jewish or muslim (that I know off).

AnnieLobeseder · 18/11/2010 14:18

Can any of the Muslims here tell me if you are actually offended by pigs, or do you just not eat them?

I mean, we Jews have no prejudice about pigs in general, we just don't eat them. But I couldn't care less about them popping up anywhere that isn't my dinner plate. Particularly cartoon or plastic ones, FFS!!!

The more fundamental Jews may have a different perspective though... they usually do...

chaya5738 · 18/11/2010 14:36

In Judaism, one is not suppose to eat, cook, or benefit from (ie: enjoying playing with; give as a gift; wear shoes made out of etc) pigs. So it isn't just confined to eating annie

But a plastic pig is not actually a pig so I am not sure what the problem is.

AnnieLobeseder · 18/11/2010 18:23

Well, yes, chaya, but I was referring to pig-depicting products, not ones containing actual pig!

AnnieLobeseder · 18/11/2010 18:25

And I don't remember any part of the Torah saying "thou shalt be offended by pigs"!

SeaGreen · 19/11/2010 12:51

Annie - you go girl!! so darn true.

petelly · 19/11/2010 16:50

I'm not sure about that not benefiting from pigs statement. Pigs aren't singled out - they're simply not kosher (not sure if the Koran singles them out).

Dogs and cats aren't kosher or halal either but plenty of Jews and Muslims keep them as pets - they just don't eat them! And no-one is offended by the farmyard cat!

SeaGreen · 19/11/2010 20:04

oh but plenty of people out there offended by dogs because of religious reasons.

SeaGreen · 19/11/2010 20:06

or purported religious reasons.
incarnation of the devil, apparently (i am quoting what i have heard from people, not quoting from any religious texts).

SeaGreen · 19/11/2010 20:10

obviously not eating an animal because one's religion says not to, or simply because one doesn't want to - no reasons required- that's a personal choice.
but ingraining a dislike of animals in one's children or making life difficult for other people with pets because one believes one's religion tells one that they are offensive animals, that offends me.

AnnieLobeseder · 19/11/2010 20:35

I was very offended by the farmhouse cat. It turned its back on me and pointed its bum in my direction when I was talking to it. Height of rudeness!

mathanxiety · 19/11/2010 20:48

My granny inculcated a hatred and suspicion of pigs in me as a child. Sows are very dangerous when they have piglets apparently. I can still remember going out of the farmhouse and climbing up the gate of the sty to get e better look, and feed the sow some shortbread as a direct consequence of granny telling me not to go near the pigs. Smile

biscuitsandbandages · 19/11/2010 20:59

Annie I'm muslim and no not offended by pigs - I quite like them!

I don't know anyone who actually is offended by them but amongst the older community there are some people (my FIL for example) who does think that as they and dogs are 'unclean'they should be avoided at all costs. Even he doesn't extend that to toy pigs though. Personally I just change my clothes and wash my hands before I pray if I've been on the local farm or playing with someone's dog.

AnnieLobeseder · 19/11/2010 21:03

Biscuits - shhhh, don't tell the Daily Wail that Muslims aren't really offended by stuff to the point of demanding toy pig removal! Wink

Thanks for answering my question, though. See, when we actually all talk about these things, we find out that we're all just sensible, tolerant people. So where does all the hysteria come from? Very sad.....

SeaGreen · 19/11/2010 22:08

yay for biscuits !

petelly · 19/11/2010 22:17

I thought that Muslims did have something about pigs and dogs being unclean but couldn't remember. DH says it's monkeys as well (is that right??) so let's hope ELC don't do a 'tropical rainforest'! Grin.

It really is such a non-story.

biscuitsandbandages · 19/11/2010 22:23

Grin monkeys? haven't got a clue about that one, DS1 will be most upset if I have to go and remove his "Monkey Puzzle" book! Wink

Annie can't write to the Daily Wail - DS2 ate all the crayons and I dont think they can read grown up writing Grin

petelly · 19/11/2010 22:24

LOL biscuits Grin
