elc have removed the pig from the happy land farm set as it may offend some religious groups!- i.e muslim and jewish. so am i wrong to suggest that maybe we should not have farm sets because it could offend veggies, the cows could offend hindus and maybe the sheep could offend the welsh???

this is bloody stupid... our town renamed christmas as fucking winterval!!!!!

chaya - i was actually making a general point. it comes across (i realise) as having commented on the situation.
i realise that it was a commercial decision (based no doubt on purported offence being taken/ the fact that many people wouldn't buy them for such reasons).
hence the linkage.
unless the price of producing a pig versus say a sheep in the set has suddenly gone up.

Are you retracting your statement then that your home town renamed christmas as winterval....it has been explained repeatedly that you are wrong.
So get over yourself with the didn't mean any harm act.....

BonniePrinceBilly · 17/11/2010 12:00

Can anyone link to some evidence where anyone has been arrested/fired/condemned for saying "black biro"?
Because the most moronic point on a thread littered with utterly moronic points.

ShuffleBallChange · 17/11/2010 12:11

Oh FFS. In our house we will sing Baa baa black sheep, we will celebrate Christmas and we will play with pigs if we feel the need. That is all. Wink

seeker · 17/11/2010 12:29

And nobody has, is or will stop you!

seeker · 17/11/2010 12:31

Over a long life I have asked many people to give me an example of something that they now can;t say or do because of the "PC brigade"

No one has ever come up with an example that wasn't racist, sexist, disablist or homophobic - and which would have been racist, sexist, disablist or homophobic before political correctness was even thought of.

Poshpaws · 17/11/2010 12:35

ROFL at the 'black biro', 'blackboard' comment Grin.

BonniePrinceBilly · 17/11/2010 12:45

I once sang baa baa black sheep and a team of pc black rainbow ops crashed through the window and took me off to pc prison. I was only released after 6 months of pc training and the hypnotherapy to ensure I could never again speak in a non-pc way.

bumpertobumper · 17/11/2010 12:45

i think that ELC is far from PC enough in other ways - i was furious the other day when i followed ds1 in who wanted to play with some digger related toy, to see on the other side of the shop the 'girls' toys which consisted of brooms, mops, ironing boards, washing machines etc. ELC trying to create a generation of good housewives!!!

I'm so glad I got dd the farmyard set from IKEA. The pig was her favourite animal

I grew up in Singapore, a Southeast Asian country next to Malaysia, a country with an Islamic majority, and in Singapore we had a fair share of Muslims, but they were not the majority. Piggy banks weren't banned, and Malays didn't complain about it. They just never touched these things... neither did they buy Piglet toys nor bags made of pig skin leather. They mixed with us and I have many Muslim friends and classmates there. I do think that banning the pig is a bit PC but then again Asia is not a very PC place in general and I might be wrong to assume that what works there works here. Seriously though, none of my friends ever complained.

RibenaBerry · 17/11/2010 15:04

I am still trying to think of institutions to undermine, in the category of 'all wot we hold dear', but I am too distracted by the talk of scones (jam, then cream, obviously).

mathanxiety · 17/11/2010 15:33

Head on over to the Royal Wedding threads if you're in the mood for taking a shot at 'all wot we hold dear' Grin

kingbeat23 · 17/11/2010 15:36

After all the scone talk yesterday, I downloaded a recipe for scones...and ruddy nice they are too....however, I have found a new bastardisation on the whole jam and cream plot.....creme fraiche ! 50% less fat mind, but i only had apricot jam and no cream and am ill so i'm not going out of the house....

stick that in yer pipe and smoke it! :)

SeaGreen · 17/11/2010 18:45

kingbeat - you DO like to live life dangerously! Grin

chaya5738 · 17/11/2010 20:27

tigerwhocametotea - noone has banned plastic pigs in the UK!

Ugh, I swore I would get off this thread but I kept getting lured back by the scones.

1sugar · 17/11/2010 20:43

Oh my giddy aunt, I am a Muslim and found this to be pretty barmy! A farm animal is a farm animal, who is making up all this pc nonsense.....I smell media frenzy phobia here....leave the animals as they are I say, kids love them all!Biscuit

Lulumaam · 17/11/2010 20:51

Am laughing still at annie's comment about bieng a Jewish vegetarian so a plastic pig is the only kind she can eat.

when i've stopped arfing, i'll have a read. or not

i can kind of get the gist really simply by readng every 10th post .

Grin

pc gooorn MMAAAAAAD

AnnieLobeseder · 17/11/2010 23:21

'Tis true, Lulumaam. Though I prefer scones, given a choice!

Willabywallaby · 18/11/2010 06:37

I had one of those moving oinking furry pigs and thought nothing of showing it to a fellow student when I was a fresher. He was muslim, I hadn't got a clue it could offend, but this was over 15 years ago. I think he laughed Hmm

DrSeuss · 18/11/2010 09:40

My Muslim friend is not thrilled that her three year old likes Peppa Pig but she's just going with it for now. Usually, it's not the actual religious minorities that make the fuss, it's those who try to hard to give no offence to the point of having no opinions or personality anymore! Most Muslims I know realise that in a Christian nation there will be Christian festivals and have no problem with this.
