to think that people who feed their kids junk to the point they are obese should be visited by social services?!

It makes me so angry when you see these morbidly obese children (fat from food, not any other medical reason) waddling around and there mums buying them more bars of chocolate and packets of crips, wtf are they DOING?!

OP posts:
ChilledChick2 · 17/11/2010 19:22

I used to be a size 18/20 (I'm 4' 11" tall) at one point, but then I realised that it wasn't the emotional issues and depression that caused me to become overweight. It was my RELUCTANCE to control my eating.

Think of it this way. I got called names because I was fat. I had 2 choices - a)I control what I eat and exercise to get down to a healthy weight, keep it steady and dismiss stupid comments OR b)I eat even more for comfort, get fatter and get called more names.

Option A seems more attractive and logical.

Desiderata · 17/11/2010 19:27

..and the 98th centile for height? Of course. Fat kids are always tall.

It's the growth hormones in all the shite they eat.

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 19:41

Desiderata, if they are 98th centile for height when they were born, how does that work?

Desiderata · 17/11/2010 19:44

Maybe the mother was consuming shite Wink

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 19:56

Okay then Smile

Desiderata · 17/11/2010 20:01

I'm not being completely trite when I say that.

If smoking, drinking, and taking crack cocaine has an effect on the unborn, then why not excessive eating?

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 20:06

Because of insulin.

Insulin regulates the amount of "energy" in the blood which goes through the placenta which feeds the baby.

Which is why women with gestational diabetes have massive babies. Their insulin isn't working.

Everyone else's is.

Its more about placental flow according to research.

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 20:08

And I really think height (as opposed to weight, which we are talking about in this instance) is more to do with genes and DNA than anything.

Weight, sure, maybe it can be "controlled" even in the womb, but height?

Surely someone would have cracked the code by now and released a bestselling book on how to have a strappingly tall child...

Longtalljosie · 17/11/2010 20:26

Lol at longtalljosie's early post on the thread.

'How do you know there isn't a medical reason?'

There never is, you know. It's just called eating too much.

Bollocks to you. And before you assume I'm obese, I'm pretty skinny. But there are medical reasons why very small children are fat. Prada Willi syndrome for one. And illness requiring steroids, and some heart problems. Is it common? No, very rare. But the OP was about calling social services at the sight of a fat child so it was a reasonable point. But go on, assume you are better than people because you're lighter than them.

The reason all this judginess pisses me right off is because I am skinny, but I eat a lot. And if I were less blessed metabolically, you'd be wagging your finger right at me.

LookToWindward · 17/11/2010 20:34

"The reason all this judginess pisses me right off is because I am skinny, but I eat a lot. And if I were less blessed metabolically, you'd be wagging your finger right at me."

You aren't blessed "metabolically", you just eat what your body needs to maintain the weight you are at. If you ate more than this you would put on weight.

And I am better than them because I don't abuse my body to such a degree that I can't see my own privates.

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 20:44

Its hard to miss your privates when your head is halfway up them Wink

loflo · 17/11/2010 20:44

"And I am better than them...."

FFS LookToWindward you are no better than anyone else you stupid mare.

Coca · 17/11/2010 20:45

lol tatty

loflo · 17/11/2010 20:45

lol@TattyDevine - very well put.

Coca · 17/11/2010 20:46

Arse, promised myself I wouldn't post on this thread

Longtalljosie · 17/11/2010 20:48

This is true. But what I need to maintain my weight is a lot more than others do to maintain theres. So I get to eat a Twix and a bag of Hula Hoops at work yesterday without thinking about it. Others don't. That's probably abusing my body, I should be eating a banana or somesuch. But the point is because you don't see excess fat on me, so I get to be in your smug club. But I'd rather not be, to be frank.

Because what you're exhibiting is nothing short of playground bullying. Why aren't you exercising your ire on tax avoiders, or binge drinkers, or drink-drivers. No, it's much more fun to tell yourself you're better than the fat person standing next to you. Despite what they've done in their life, and what you've done in yours. You're just better. Yeah, right Hmm

There are people with weight issues in my life whom I love and yes I worry about their weight, in the same way I worry about my friends who smoke. But do I feel better than them? No.

Coca · 17/11/2010 20:50

Wonderful post Longtalljosie

Longtalljosie · 17/11/2010 20:52

"..and the 98th centile for height? Of course. Fat kids are always tall.

Jesus, so you're insulting my baby now? She was on breastmilk alone at that point.

A more logical explanation for why my daughter is tall might be found in my username. I am tall. My father is tall. My grandmother, aged 94, who lived through the blitz, was 6' when it was very unusual.

But obviously, no, you know better Angry

Longtalljosie · 17/11/2010 20:55

Thank you, Coca, although I'm grateful you overlooked the "theres" rather than "theirs" in par 1. Anger does terrible things to your spelling.

ChippingIn · 17/11/2010 20:55

Longtalljosie - thank you x

TattyDevine · 17/11/2010 20:55

Dont rise to it Josie - go with evidence based reseach to explain these factors, if you really feel the need to, which you should not. Just have a laugh at this thread, its actually quite funny when you think about it.

loflo · 17/11/2010 20:58

Eloquently put Longtalljosie.

Desiderata · 17/11/2010 20:59

You're just getting hysterical now, Josie.

Longtalljosie · 17/11/2010 21:06

No I'm not. I'm taking you seriously. You've said the reason why my daughter is on the 98th for height is because I'm feeding her shit. I've pointed out everyone in my family is tall. Is calling me hysterical in return the best you can do?

Actually, to continue to take you seriously, there is one lifestyle choice which has been shown to make children fat, and that is the mother not eating enough. There were a group of women who were pregnant during a siege by the Nazis in WW2, and not only were their children fatter than average, but so were their children.

Scientists concluded that the foetus is continually taking in information in utero about what the world is like outside, and if the mother is malnourished, the body concludes this child is likely to be in an area prone to famine, and physiological changes then take place to encourage the baby to hold on to body fat in later life, because the assumption is made s/he may need it.

Coca · 17/11/2010 21:19
