talking to a beautiful Somali lady today(they all have hollywood smiles don't they, bloody genetic miracles!!) and she confirmed that whilst her 5 & 7 year old dds don't cover their heads she gets harassed and pressured by men at the mosque that her dds should cover. She said that whilst she doesn't because she loves her dds hair, other women do cover their very young dds. She said the men also say that unless they do it from very young they will not do it when they are the right age!

So it's not only about copying Mummy, just like the rise of the burka it's a renewed stick to beat women with.

I'm not obsessive about Riven, I hope that, as Riven and I do not see eye to eye, that she would avoid my threads.

Erm yeah that proves you are right. Because everyone is the same. Hmm

tums · 18/10/2010 16:03

Why be so concerned about other peoples decisions?

I don't give a damn what others choose to wear.

For those who don't know any muslim hijabi's personally - the vast majority CHOOSE to wear it.

Also everyone is an individual - Not all Somali females have hollywood smiles either!

You'll be talking about them mighty clever asian doctors next!!

I really shouldn't have to state the obvious to an adult. Confused

Katey1010 · 18/10/2010 16:18

There are frequently threads about what is appropriate for young girls to wear (from a Western perspective). There are also frequent threads about hooter hiders/breastfeeding in public. The double standards are a bit rich. We cover our breasts/cleveage, legs, shoulders, backs, arses etc etc depending on where we are or who is looking. We also cover our children up. We shave things, wax things, pierce, blow things up with collegen, bleach things and so on. It is just cultural mores at work.

I couldn't care less unless someone is forcing someone to do it. And, by that I mean actually forcing, not putting pressure on (otherwise my mother has been oppressing me for years with clothes!).

katkouta · 18/10/2010 16:36

Good point Katey1010

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 16:48

I agree. In this country it's very rare for a female to go out in summer covered in hair. That's a cultural norm. But we aren't "forced" to shave.
I don't care what Muslim women, or girls wear. TBH it's worse when little girls from this country wear tracksuits bottoms with HOT CHICK on the backside.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 16:48

Oh you said shaving already Blush

SpookyLettuce · 18/10/2010 16:56

"TBH it's worse when little girls from this country wear tracksuits bottoms with HOT CHICK on the backside."

They both look equally wrong on little girls.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 16:58

I don't think so, personally. Hijabs can look very pretty.

prettyfly1 · 18/10/2010 16:59

TBH I dont care particularly. I dont think it is right but it is their religion and their choice and provided noone is being forced with sticks to do it, I respect their rights to dress as they please - its the perk of living in a free nation.

fastedwina · 18/10/2010 16:59

What's so offensive about the hijab and the long, loose pants and kaftan type tops many muslim women like to wear? Are you equally offended when you see a Cathilic nun in similar gear? Must admit, I'm not keen on the veils and Burkhas but not sure I'd want to ban it.

are muslims not from this country? Confused

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:30

LOL at the turning a positive comment into a negative to shit stir.
Are all muslims who live here born here Confused Confused

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:32

is that directed at me spikey?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:34

Who else??
You won't accuse me of being a bigot. My childrens Dad is a Muslim, they go to mosque, so DO NOT attempt to trip me up.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:35

bigot is your own word. i didn't accuse you of anything but clearly you feel vulnerable to teh accusation.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:39

No, I know I'm not a bigot, or why would I have had a relationship with a Muslim Confused I don't like words being twisted to suit the ulterior motive you seem to have. Why did you pick up on that part of my post? Are all Muslims that live here, born here?
What was your motive?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:41

So just to clarify, as obviously some people are too thick to work it out, I meant English when I said "from this country".
Is that OK with you??!!

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:43

no they are not, the same way all little girls that wear 'hot chick' trousers aren't born here. and the same way some of them are and some muslims are.

why did you say 'girls from this country'? it implies that you think muslims aren't. that is why i picked up on that part. it was a silly thing to say IMO.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:44

spikey i know exactly which country you meant. I am not 'thick'.

Feenie · 18/10/2010 17:44

British, surely.....
