talking to a beautiful Somali lady today(they all have hollywood smiles don't they, bloody genetic miracles!!) and she confirmed that whilst her 5 & 7 year old dds don't cover their heads she gets harassed and pressured by men at the mosque that her dds should cover. She said that whilst she doesn't because she loves her dds hair, other women do cover their very young dds. She said the men also say that unless they do it from very young they will not do it when they are the right age!

So it's not only about copying Mummy, just like the rise of the burka it's a renewed stick to beat women with.

Re. patent shoes. These were banned at my friend's Catholic school in the 70s on the basis that their shiny reflectiveness (is there such a word?) might help perverts look up your skirt Hmm.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:48

Well I meant English. Which is who wears those type of trousers.
And you might think it's silly, but TBH I'm not used to analysing everything before I post. Also, I don't tend to tiptoe around cultural issues, because I'm North London born and raised, so mix with everyone. It's the people that don't really mix who try hardest. I don't try to be PC, but my post was not offensive

Marchpane · 18/10/2010 17:49

I am sooo tempted to get myself a burkha now. Just to piss off a few people on this thread. And a few other racists when out and about.

And a turban (for lenak Grin who also made some excellent feminist points)

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:50

So if you knew I meant English, why mention it? That's what I meant by motive.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:51

And it is English girls that wear the trousers before anyone picks on that.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:51

i just dont understand why you even needed to say 'from this country'. 'little girls who wear hot chick trousers' would have described what you meant. adding the 'from this country bit makes it look like you don't consider muslims to be from this country.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:52

i libe in northern ireland and i have seen them here, so it isn't just english girls. sorry.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:53

They are not all from this country. From this country means English IMO. I'm not from England, as I have no English blood, even though I'm cockney. Maybe that was the mix up then, differences in terms.

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 17:55

who isn't all from this country? muslims? niether are all the little girls who wear hot chick trousers. but i still don't know why you even added teh from this country bit because it looks like you don't consider any muslims to be from this country when you say that.

capricorn76 · 18/10/2010 17:57

Posie Parker posts about the Muslims......again... and no they don't all have Hollywood smiles, they are as diverse as any other women.

I bet you call black people coloured...

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 17:59

English Muslims are from this country. They are English. I've just said I have no English blood and don't consider myself from this country even though I was born here. So therefore I don't consider all Muslims as from this country. In fact, my Turkish in laws would be insulted at the suggestion they were "from" here. You don't get it.
For arguments sake though, Muslims are from England. I'm sure they'd be pleased to hear it

HeadlessPrinceBilly · 18/10/2010 18:02

I'd love to wear a burqa sometimes, then I wouldn't frighten small children on the morning school run with my wild hair and wrinkled unmade up face.

[hgrin]

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 18:03

you dont understand what i am saying at all spikey.

your post implied that you didn't consider any muslims to be from this country.

i did not say all muslims are english. if you don't get it i give up. you never will.

clemetteattlee · 18/10/2010 18:04

Can you two give it a rest? You are arguing from the same perspective with unnecessary antagonism...

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 18:04

public forum clemalette

clemetteattlee · 18/10/2010 18:06

Fair enough, I was just concerned about your respective blood pressures... Please take it in the spirit it was meant (I will be asking you to shake hands next...)

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 18:07

No, I use from this country as meaning English. Where I'm from, the majority of Muslims are not English. How many Muslims do you actually know? Because it seems like you tried to look PC by focusing on my post, and failed. Because you didn't get to catch a bigot to flame?

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 18:08

Smile my blood pressure is fine. i am not wound up about it. mildly frustrated.

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 18:09

Frustrated because you thought you were on to something.

KiwiKat · 18/10/2010 18:09

Not a good debate, has descended into personal attacks, and I'm now bored ...

Kiwi (also Not From This Country) wanders off to polish her thigh-high lelli kellis, with her muffin top oozing from inappropriate trousers, trying desperately to invite inappropriate glances from would-be chaste men ...

booooooooooyhoo · 18/10/2010 18:10

i was not trying to 'look PC' Hmm. i didn't make any comments that i needed to 'look PC' about. your comment stood out to me because it made a comparison between muslims and girls from this country when infact, plenty of muslims are from thsi country. that is why i picked up on it.

Feenie · 18/10/2010 18:13

Blimey, Spikeycow, you are certainly aptly named! You said something a bit silly, but not intentionally, boooooooyhoo quite rightly picked you up on it. Just say 'yes, you're right - I didn't mean it to sound like that, sorry!" And then we can all move on, fgs.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/10/2010 18:14

Would it be a reasonable compromise to say that little girls should be allowed to be little girls, and not dressed up to look like mini-adults, and that it is unneccessary and inappropriate either to dress little girls in highly sexualised clothing, or to cover them up because otherwise men might find them sexually arousing?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 18:19

You don't get it still.
I'll explain one more time. I personally, use from this country to mean English. Which is why I said I'm not from this country myself. Now you say plenty of Muslims are from this country. Which to my mind means you are saying Muslims are English. Very irritating to be told you are saying something you don't mean isn't it? Do you think plenty of Muslims are English? No. So why not just stop banging on and admit you picked up something in my original post that wasn't there, which you should know by now, having read subsequent posts?

spikeycow · 18/10/2010 18:20

I'm not apologising. She thought she'd caught a bigot, and was wrong.
