I work as a carer and a lovely lady who I work with told me that her grandson was circumcised a week ago (part of their religion) at 4 weeks old, by a priest and although hes still a bit sore its better to have it done when they are little because babies don't feel pain Shock.
Having 2 kids who are now adults I'm afraid I'm inclined to disagree with her.
I'd like to clearly state that I'm not against circumcision for what ever reason I just find it strange that she should think that babies dont feel pain Confused.

Niiice, dragging your ishoos onto a different thread. Haven't you read the Mn etiquette guide? Hmm

I'm not sure it's worth me getting embroiled in this but anyway..

Colditz - my Dad had a medical circumcision in adulthood because the foreskin was too tight to retract properly. Louis XVI of France required the same procedure before he and Marie-Antoinette could have any children. It does happen.

Whoever's DH has the short foreskin - having it removed entirely should be of benefit because yes, there would be no movement but nothing would be trying to move under constraint either so the pain/discomfort factor would be removed.

DH is circumcised - his Irish father was also and had both DH and his brother done at birth. I prefer uncircumcised (yes, have had both, slut that I am!) but have no choice in the matter.

DH wanted to get DS done too for some of the reasons Lennon has suggested - but not so badly that he was prepared to hunt for a private surgeon willing to do it, and pay £100+ for the op - I wasn't keen so was glad that he didn't pursue it.

Oh yes, including being civil to people?Wink

They do feel pain....it is believed they don't have the neurological connections to remember it though. Hence when children come in for mmr at 12 months they walk calmly in to the room, with the booster they don't.

Apologies Winter I was out of order.Having a mare of a time at the moment and got caught up in the havoc that can be the AIBU thread.Once again, many apologies.

I suppose such graciousness inspires a grudging apology from myself (though it doesn't come naturally)

Hiya all,
Sori just had a quick 'catch up' with this thread and was wondering...how many people are able to perform circumcisions without being medically trained is it legal to do such a thing outside of hospital? if it's a religious leader are they trained? my DP has just told me his aunt did his on the living room floor Shockprobably with a butter knife or what ever came in handy LOL Confused.

Have just cme back to this thread. Booooooif you are still around, you are wrong, the thread originally was about someone saying "BABIES DON'T FEEL PAIN"

Yes the OP used circumcision as an example but the actual thread was that the OP was surprised that another adult could possibly think that babies don't feel pain.

salsmum · 18/10/2010 12:50

AOH yes you are right, as said Im not making a point about circumcision persay as long as it is done by a skilled surgeon/Rabbi it was just the co-workers belief that babies dont feel pain especially when she was referring to a proceedure that I would assume, without proper after care pain relief would be extremely painful especially when the wound would obviously be in contact with the contents of a four week olds nappy. Obviously I didnt want to offend my co-worker if it's part of her culture but I was more than a little shocked with the 'no pain' statement.
