Ok today I woke up with really engorged breasts, DC2 is 2 weeks old. The BF councillor told me to go to a large department store in town and have some feeding bras properly fitted...

So off I went with DH, and 2 DC's in tow. Bra fitting dept had 2 staff on and there was 1 other old woman in there. I asked where the maternity bras were and the old woman snapped at me that she was first in the line for fitting. I was Hmm as I wasn't trying to get ahead, just find a bra first!

Anyway DS started playing up a bit but DH had him pretty much under control so went into the changing room, old woman was there too. She had asked for at least a dozen bras to be fitted so the fitter kept telling me to wait which was fine. DS then called out 'where's Mummy' and the woman stuck her head out the chaging room and shouted at DH 'For God' sake take that horrible child out of here'. I heard this from behind my curtain and for a few mins was in such shock, half assuming it was a very odd joke! Realising it wasn't I got dressed and ran after DH.

Decided to by a bra without being fitted properly as I had tried bra on and it felt ok and I was in such pain I just wanted a bra! While paying the fitted whispered to me how rude the other woman was, I was Hmm at it being whispered to save the old womans feelings and I just said how DS was only 2 and how shocked I was that a grown woman would shout at him like that...

So, finished paying and walked past the changing room where the woman popped out to shout at me that I was a rubbish mother and DS should have respect for old people Shock

I immediately burst into tears and stammered that he was 2, we had a 2 week old baby and I has hugely engorged breast and was in a lot of pain and just wanted a fitted bra! Blush

She then told me to get out the shop, to which the fitter started leading me to the door! AIBU to have sobbed in public and be pretty upset that the fitter allowed the woman to talk to us all like that?

Threelittleducks · 10/10/2010 13:32

Horrible old bitch!!

Ignore her!!
{Evil old woman devil incarnate grumble grumble grumble....}
There really are some horrible people in the world. Some old buggers just think they have the right to talk to other people in this way and it really makes my blood boil.

I hope karma gets her sorted.
Do some complaining to the store. Why not? It will make you feel better even if it comes to nothing. Otherwise it might fester and make you feel bad a for longer than it should.
In the meantime come up with some good phrases to hurl at old harridans like this - it will help if they roll off your tongue quickly.
Tell me where she is and I shall go bop her nose!!
Mean old lady!!

Oh it really makes me angry!! Angry

EmmaBemma · 10/10/2010 13:34

she does sound a complete cow and there's no way you're a rubbish mum - BUT - if I were you, I'd definitely be saving myself the hassle of having my entire family in tow when bra shopping. I'd have brought the baby only and left my husband and toddler at home (I say this as a woman with a three year old and a ten week old). Much easier.

Mumcentreplus · 10/10/2010 14:08

What an evil old bat!! Angry Angry angry] shes lucky she didn't meet me she would have been told a few choice words!!..

I'm so sorry..Im not surprised you got upset ..

here's an old lady joke to cheer you up...

Dress Of Love

An old woman went to visit her daughter and she found her naked, waiting for her husband.

The mother asks the daughter: "what are you doing naked?" The daughter responds:"This is the dress of love."

When the mother returns home, She strips naked and waits for her husband.

When her husband arrives, he asks her: "what are you doing naked, woman?"

She responds: "This is the dress of love."

And he said to her: "Well, go iron it." Grin

Mumcentreplus · 10/10/2010 14:09

Why did you DH not say anything to her?

MsKalo · 10/10/2010 14:18

she is a stupid nasty old bitter bitch! poor you and lots of cuddles from us mumsnetters! x

JulesJules · 10/10/2010 14:22

Poor you. What a vile woman. I would just try and forget it, tbh.

I would not blame the shop or complain to them though - it is not up to shop staff to referee spats between customers.

ceres · 10/10/2010 14:23

yanbu - what a horrible experience for you.

this woman was terribly rude - no question of that - but 62 is not old!

i would write to the shop and complain. obviously they can't stop rude people shopping in their store (although wouldn't that be fantastic!) but they can train their staff in better ways of dealing with difficult situations.

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:25

That woman was nuts, tbh the staff handled it really badly. They should be trained in dealing with difficult customers. Please name and shame. I go to Bravissimo, its excellent, the staff are helpful, friendly and the bras are great.

ColdComfortFarm · 10/10/2010 14:28

She sounds horrible, but she may have been initially worried that a wandering two year old looking for mummy might have opened the curtain, which made her anxious and aggressive. It would certainly cross my mind that this might happen. What exactly did you say to her? There is no need for the ageist remarks/jokes either. We'll all be old and wrinkled one day.

ColdComfortFarm · 10/10/2010 14:30

Did the woman hear you discussing her with the shop assistant? That might account for the second outburst, don't you think?

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:30

That woman is an old bat, wonderful thing hindsight is. I would have given her what for. Fancy escorting you out like a criminal, like you did somethig wrong Shock, complain, complain, complain, and never go to that shop again.

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:32

Yes I will be old one day, but wo't be an old bat I hope.

ColdComfortFarm · 10/10/2010 14:33

But you will be wrinkled, so I don't see any need for misogynistic jokes about how repulsive older women's bodies are (not the OP's post)

Mumcentreplus · 10/10/2010 14:35

CCF relax..as you have said we will all be wrinkly and old some day Wink and she has no right to shout at anyone anxious or not..

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:36

I already am Grin. Anyway we are directing commets at that horrid woman not all old people, there is a difference.

Mumcentreplus · 10/10/2010 14:36

its not replusive tis wrinkly..FACT Grin

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:39

I have bad eczema

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:40

If i had been nasty than I would probably expect bad comments directed towards me and my wrinkliness, part and parcel of being nasty.

minipen · 10/10/2010 14:41

Name & shame the shop so I can avoid, how awful for you.

I was told I was too young to be a mother once because my daughter cried at the checkout, a few cries then went to sleep, she was a few weeks old in a pushchair, I couldn't believe I was judged so quickly!

I think you should have a chocolate cake & hoepfully feel much better

Marchpane · 10/10/2010 14:42

You should have shat in her handbag.

Or ignored her but never, never get into a verbal exchange. They just don't understand reasoning.

Mumcentreplus · 10/10/2010 14:43

Oh crap!! Confused..I've just pissed off Older ladies and eczema suffers in one fell swoop..Shock

ColdComfortFarm · 10/10/2010 14:45

The whole premise of the 'joke' above is that older women's bodies are so ludicrous and repulsive that even their husbands cannot bear to look at them. That's misogynistic. This attitude might also explain why an older women who is in her underwear or topless behind a flimsy curtain in a shop might feel very stressed and vulnerable on realising there is a small boy running around looking for mummy. A boy who might very well pull back the curtain at any point. Two year olds do this, they have done this to me, but luckily they were my own two year olds! If the OP was moaning about her to the shop assistant afterwards, then I assume she overheard that (after all the shop assistant was whispering so they must have been close by) and that is probably why she shouted for the second time. I would probably feel pissed off at someone who was bitching about me in my hearing. I agree saying mean things about a child is not pleasant, but children shouldn't be running about in changing rooms where someone is undressed.

pigletmania · 10/10/2010 14:46

no you haven't Mumcentureplus Grin I am wrinkly especially when i havent put enough cream on.
