To think Twilight is the most boring pile of old drivel...

I've ever had the misfortune to read!
I've stuck with it, because everyone loves them, but crikey. I've eaten jam sandwiches with more plot!
Don't get me wrong, I know it's more for teenagers, but dear God, I'm halfway through the third book, and bugger all has happened!

I started reading the on the recommendation of my niece and the first one was OK story wise, but I couldn't get past the bit where Edward got his sister to keep Bella away from her other friends for her own good. (Possibly the 3rd one??) I also skipped a lot of the teen angst in the second one so I'm not entirely sure what happened in that one either.

Why anyone (other than 15 year olds girls) thinks this is a great love story is beyond me.

PURPLESWAN · 06/10/2010 12:17

Its basically vampire Mills & Boon aimed at teenagers - not really a good read for an adult and only really enjoyable as disposable entertainment in its movie form.

If I were 15 im sure my opinion would be COMPLETELY different

plantsitter · 06/10/2010 12:20

I agree - it's like a 9 year old telling you about their dream. 'and then we... and then we... and then we...'

Also, and I'm sure this is terribly irresponsible of me, I kept thinking 'it's only SEX! It's not that great! Just make sure you use contraception and get it out of the way!' but I may feel differently about that when DD is 15...

juneybean · 06/10/2010 12:22

I like it...

...but I am quite excited for the Vampires Suck movie that's coming out next week!

gentlyfalling · 06/10/2010 12:22

YANBU - you're absolutely right. Rubbish plot and very very poory written. I pushed through all the way to the end of the series to make sure I wasn't missing some 'in-joke' which would make it get good at the end. It didn't.

This article about Stephen King's take on the whole thing is pretty funny..

Spookyoldclothcatpuss · 06/10/2010 12:25

I like mills and boon for a little light entertainment. At least they have a plot!
And I think that Edward is AWFUL!

wait til you get to the fourth one, Stephanie Meyer on acid

SoupDragon · 06/10/2010 12:28

Agree. It's a pile of utter shite. The first was ok but they got progressively worse, even when you thought they couldn't possibly get any worse they surprised you.

Spookyoldclothcatpuss · 06/10/2010 12:28

Come back Anne Rice, you may have found religion but all is most definitely forgiven!

PURPLESWAN · 06/10/2010 12:30

LOL im a true blood fan so I prefer my vampires a bit more savage and sexy!

cory · 06/10/2010 12:30

My teen dd couldn't agree with you more. Finds Bella sickening and assures me that if she ever finds control freaky vampire in her bedroom she will call for the police.

potplant · 06/10/2010 12:32

There's a brilliant Stephen King quote comparing it to Harry Potter where he says that Harry Potter is about good vs evil and Twilight is about the importance of having a boyfriend (apologies to Stephen King for hugely misquoting him).

Spookyoldclothcatpuss · 06/10/2010 12:33

True Blood. Now thats better! I adore Eric. He's so baaad, but soo gorgeous!

OP posts:
PURPLESWAN · 06/10/2010 12:37

I think thats where true blood works you are never quite sure whether Eric or Bill is the good guy or the bad guy because they are probably both at some time.

piprabbit · 06/10/2010 12:37

juneybean - I'm also excited about Vampire Sucks.

BTW, I have Twilight question that one of you may be able to answer for me.
The vampires are almost unable to control themselves in the presence of blood - even a tiny cut causes huge problems for the whole clan. Bella is meant to be a fairly normal girl, old enough to marry. So what on earth happens when she has her period?

Spookyoldclothcatpuss · 06/10/2010 12:40

Pip, good question! With a little bit of luck one of them will eat her and put us out of our misery!
I'd also like to see what Lestat would make of Edward!

YANBUatall...and even if you haven't yet finished the 3rd one, it's not to late to bin the lot. That's how far I got, I think it was the coma-inducing werewolf folklore round the campfire that just made me think, I am never going to be this young, ever again, never going to get the hours back that I've spent persevering with this badly written derivative slop.

And the fact that the new Dr Who was obviously chosen because he bears a mild 2-dimensional-cardboard-cutout-face resemblence to yer vampire bloke makes me hate him as well. Sad

MotherofHobbit · 06/10/2010 12:41

I quite enjoyed them in a silly candyfloss kind of way but the Bella/Edward relationship did make for uncomfortable reading.

Possessiveness/deliberate separation from friends and family.....here's hoping the teenage girls reading them are mature enough to know that's control freakery and not romance.

WitchyWooWoo · 06/10/2010 12:43

can stand twilight. if i see another person wearing a team edward or jacob tshirt im going to scream. its awful.

now true blood. thats something worth watching (read all the books too)

mmmm eric

yanbu

Kirk1 · 06/10/2010 12:45

I think my worst problem with these books is that the author really seems to believe she's created rounded and believable characters, whereas what she's done is to write an excruciating Mary-Sue character and have her fall in love with Meyer's high-school crush. I'm afraid I haven't read the books, one paragraph made my eyes bleed it was so badly written. I already read my quota of crap this lifetime....

Bunbaker · 06/10/2010 12:48

Yes the Twilight saga is utterly boring.

DD and I had a "Twilight" evening at a friend's in the summer. We watched the first two movies and then the following week we went to see the third one. I struggled to stay awake during the second and third movies. The plot is so laborious, and all this angst and gazing into each other's eyes is dull, dull, dull.

I am obviously the wrong demographic for this type of thing.

Bucharest · 06/10/2010 12:50

I'd also forgotten the ridiculous lack-of-plot development.
Girl joins new school. Sees odd bloke staring at her. Meets him in carpark. He says "erm, I'm a vampire" She says "s'OK".

I kind of expected a more dramatic lead up to him breaking the news y'know....

Faaamily · 06/10/2010 12:51

Juvenile tosh.

Deanna1977 · 06/10/2010 12:53

Its dreadfull. I lost the will to live whilst reading it.
