www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1317312/Waitrose-forced-ditch-halal-lamb-Duchy-range.html

Why on earth are people objecting so much? Do they really think that the standard method of killing an animal is any less cruel?

Quite mad.

"soon as you mentioned muslims accusing poeple of being 'racist' you made the assumption they were not white."

Muslims play the race card, i dont!

FlookCrow · 03/10/2010 19:06

Halal meat is killed in a ritualistic fashion according to a particular religion. I don't know why this ritual has been applied to more than the minority, and not only that, why it is not named as such. I don't specifically eat meat that is labeled as "halal" because (drum roll), I'm not a Muslim. And to be quite honest, I'm more than a bit irritated that the choice has been taken away from me.

I don't think that's being unreasonable.

Alouiseg · 03/10/2010 19:07

Desertgirl. You're being spectacularly naive. Of course i use my juudgement when dealing with everyone. Don't you?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 03/10/2010 19:08

Alouiseg - In what way have Muslims altered or asked you to alter your behaviour? I can't think of in instance where I have, and I live in an area with a large established turkish muslim community and quite a lot of more recent muslim immigrants.

desertgirl · 03/10/2010 19:11

flook, what is actually bothering you about the "ritual"? given that if meat is not halal, you have no information about how it was killed (so it could have been the same method as halal, without the prayer; it could have been a more painful method, etc) - if you are not Muslim, the prayer aspects of the killing don't affect you, surely? You weren't previously specifically choosing to buy 'non-halal' meat, so what choice has been taken away?

really don't understand.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 03/10/2010 19:12

Aloise, do you actually know any Muslims in real life?

Or are your views entirely based on the Daily Hate?

Alouiseg, how am I being naive? I am responding to your comments about being 'highly suspicious' of people with Irish accents, for example. That isn't using judgement, that's succumbing to mass hysteria.

I am not sure how I would go about my daily life if I were to be 'highly suspicious' of Muslims but thankfully so far none of my colleagues or neighbours have shown signs of any burning desire to kill me....

My friend has been spat at while leaving a beach, wearing a bikini top and shorts.

I have to turn up at an airport about a year before i check in. i have to remove my shoes. i cannot take liquids through.

I have to go through body scanners not just at airports but in some upper floor restaurants.

partyhats · 03/10/2010 19:17

The fact that waitrose lamb is halal is neither her nor there to me I will not buy it (nor many other muslims) until it is clearly labelled as such. It has not been done to pander to muslim demands as the supremely unenlightened Alouiseg is up in arms about. It is to save costs for the supermarket. Thats business. If you don't like it don't buy it.

I actually dont like lumping people into a generic mass due to gender/race or anything else but i think that we are very foolish if we pretend that there are only a few nasty Muslims around who want to kill us.

Behind every suicide bomber is a mosque, a family and a network. People do not and cannot work alone.

Alouiseg · 03/10/2010 19:19

Im anti all religions actually.

LithaR · 03/10/2010 19:21

'what is actually bothering you about the "ritual"?'

Praying during the slaughter of an animal, whether it be kosher or halal, is a ritual of that faith.

If you are of the Sikh faith, which around 300k people in the UK are, you are not allowed to eat any meat that has been slaughtered ritualistically. Whether known or not.

MaMoTTaT · 03/10/2010 19:21

Riven - you want to kill me OMG - you could have told me before I went out for lunch with you last summer Shock! And can I say your make-up on your hands and face to make yourself look white was very impressive.

(bet that cost a lot of tax payers money to have it done for you Wink)

desertgirl · 03/10/2010 19:21

Alouiseg, how many Muslims are there in the world, and how many of them are suicide bombers??

it is like blaming all Christians for the weirdo acts of [individuals from] a couple of fundamentalist sects.

partyhats · 03/10/2010 19:21

FFS Alouiseg I can't even be bothered with your last one, beggars belief.

Kathyjelly · 03/10/2010 19:25

My reluctance is because of the cruelty of an animal being aware of it's throat being cut and the panic of the few seconds it takes for them to lose consciousness.

I'm not the slightest bit bothered about prayers or no prayers. My only thought is to minimise suffering and the RSPCA (whom I am sure have done their research) regard it as cruel.

Convince me that it isn't and I would be happy. Until then, I go to the local butcher who has clear views and offers a guarantee.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 03/10/2010 19:28

Alouiseg - Conservative attitudes to dress are not unique to Islam. The other things you mention are due to authorities fondness for security theatre in the face of threats from terrorism.

"hey also are not planning to blow up shopping centres"

ahhh now come on Riven - you're got it good in your City with shopping - you don't want to go blowing them shops up

Just out of interest those who are worried about the animal cruetly side of things

Would you never eat a chicken/goat/pig killed and prepared for you by someone that rears their own animals for eating? As I bet a large number of those people don't kill them as successfully or as quickly as the RSPCA would like
