There is a new one in Cheltenham (ponce town) called the Swallow Bakery.

Staffed by supercilious Diana Vickered hair students who curl their lip when you ask them to clear a table. Don't speak down to me, young lady, you work in a CAKE shop, like Barbara Royle.

£2.80 for a cupcake
£4.90 for slice of chocolate cake
£4.50 for a milkshake
£10 yes TEN ENGLISH POUNDS for a devon cream tea
£6 for tuna carpaccio sandwich.

I took DD in there for a treat (breaking a lifetime cupcake veto) and it made me fume.

Am I a miserable bastard or do I have a point in HATING cupcake business ventures?

I didn't pay those prices for all that stuff, me and DD had a cupcake each and a drink each.

Tuna carpaccio. Pah.

they all fold when rich hubby sees the books...

Chil1234 · 01/10/2010 15:04

(There are shops devoted to cupcakes? I need to get out more.) YANBU ... I would take my business elsewhere. I hear Greggs do I nice line in Cornish Pasties.

oopsandbabycoconuts · 01/10/2010 15:04

No YANBU - I went into the same sort of place to buy my MIL a capcake the other day and handed over £2 and the gel-haired oik told asked for another 25p Shock I wasn't even sitting in - he then dumped it in a paper bag an virtually threw it at me. I gave it back, made him swap it for an unsquished one and put it in a box. I felt I needed a box and ribbon for my £2.25!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/10/2010 15:05

Heh heh at Swallow Bakery, why dont you creep back in the middle of the night and grafiti "spit or" infront of the sign.

Grin
GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:05

YES

I have a theory about all those business owned by those women in Red magazine, funded by their husbands who are in London shagging Lithuanian beauties whislt wife is in provinces selling angora babygros/cupcakes/french artisan whatnots

CMOTdibbler · 01/10/2010 15:06

Wheres that one ? Noticed a chi chi tea shop down the brewery end of the high street has opened too. But the service in all tea places in Cheltenham is poxy imo

I hate cupcake places as they don't do gf cakes, and ds wants the pretty cake but doesn't like the icing

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 01/10/2010 15:06

What is the big deal with Cupcakes. Something that has passed me by, are there whole businesses devoted to just cup cakes?

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:06

ABF - I love you

OP posts:
Aitch · 01/10/2010 15:06

cupcakes imo taste like absolute cack, all that butter icing, bleh. some women need to masturbate more...

muggglewump · 01/10/2010 15:08

God I hate poncerama shite.
I'd far rather go in the Baker's Oven for a sausage roll and a chocolate doughnut.

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 01/10/2010 15:08

GOML - go to Cirencester - there's a really lovely and reasonably priced place there called The Cake shop (at least I think that's the name) - as a sign outside saying 'Doesn't COST As much as some' - and good homemade cakes there. Cream tea about £4 last time went there.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:09

OOH CMOT - you need to go and have a look.

In the whole of Regency Cheltenham, full of creammy stucco beautiful buildings, where do you think they have house this new cake shop?

The Quadrangle. Yes, the 70s brutalist office builing on the prom (houses Savils, Office Angels) which has permanent scaffolding on the outside due to it nearly falling down with concrete cancer.

I seem to remember that it was all muffins about 10 years ago...! Cupcakes are the biggest rip-off! A bit of sponge with a load of sickly sweet buttercream! Any business specialising solely in these overrated caloriefests won't last very long, especially as we're all going to have zero disposable incomes after the comprehensive spending review! Tax cupcakes, that's what i say!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/10/2010 15:09

There is a similar place in a ponce town not far from me. They also stock things like Emma Bridgewater cake tins etc at a 15% mark up above John Lewis down the road. I don't think it will last long.

Acanthus · 01/10/2010 15:11

You should set up one of your own and as a homage to the genre call it Great Tits Grin

staranise · 01/10/2010 15:12

I'm still spluttering over my tea and digestive at someone charging £4.90 for a slice of cake!! And MN reckons that SW London is poncey!!

CMOTdibbler · 01/10/2010 15:12

Niice - guessing the rental isn't much then?

I have those Drina books for you btw

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:12

Will check that place out - I love Cirencester.

CMOT - Roberts Cafe is nice (Regent Street, used to be Boogaloos)

At least it is no JUMPED UP and poncey.

Aitch - totally agree that women who have cupcakes fetishes d not orgasm enough, I think ours is a wondefully scientific theory

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:13

CMOT - really. I thought you were joking re Drina books!

Psammead · 01/10/2010 15:16

This cupcake thing has passed me by. Anyone know a giid recipe? I could fancy cake but I am not forking out two quid!

badstar · 01/10/2010 15:17

I went to a birthay party for my friend's 3yo recently and a guest's Mum had kindly made some cupcakes. We oohed and aahed (I was as insincere as poss) and she then handed out her business card. Cheeky Bitch.

CMOTdibbler · 01/10/2010 15:17

No, if you want them, they are there. A lend of the Wells books is also on offer

Will check out Roberts - have only had disappointment in Chelt, but go to a fab cafe in Worcester where the cakes are allergy friendly, super tasty and cheap

badstar · 01/10/2010 15:18

For her new cupcake business obv. I hate cupcakes. Anyway are they not called fairy cakes?

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/10/2010 15:18

Are you sure CMOT - on that thread they say that they were selling for a FORTUNE on ebay.

You could prob. buy a load of cupcakes for what those books are worth? Grin
