To be very upset by friend demanding something back given to me 15 years ago??

I'll try not to ramble, but already feeling ill & now very upset, so excuse me if I do....I would apreciate opinions as to whether or not I am being unreasonable in, a being upset, & b, refusing.

Some 16 odd years ago, probably much more, ........my friend ...(who is one of my DDs 2 GodMums) gave me a vintage astrakan coat, passed to her by her uncle, but not her style at all, but very much mine..........she said at the time something along the lines of "if you change your mind & don't wear it, or want it in future, don't get rid of it, but let me have it back, maybe I'll keep it or pass it on"

Now I love this coat, repaired the lining & keep it for winter going out for special occasions & have looked after it well, so its still in as new condition

the other day I recieved an e-mail, telling me her DD now 17 had been looking through old family photos, & has fell in love with this coat...& wondered if I still had it & was it used..& could she have it back....at first I was confused & thought she meant a 1 she had passed over to my DD....

e-mail yesterday clarified what she meant....so I replied saying, yes, I still love it & wear it with pride & even included a recent photo (we don't live close to each other anymore)

Just now recieved a reply along the lines of....

Sadly DD feels just as strongly about the coat & DD takes precedence over friend, will be popping down to your town next Monday I will collect it then Shock

Confused

Why do I keep coming back to this thread? Grin

rockinhippy · 09/09/2010 13:54

Oh Joy, this turned into another mumsnetAIBU special did it ..rollseyes more fool me for posting for genuine unbiased opinions, even if not what I wanted to hear Grin.......

Nutty ex might of made it into sheep to shag...I hadn't thought of him waiting it for anything along those lines until now Grin

Thanks for the genuine opinions, & I enjoyed the giggle along the way with the funny ones, & for those of you that contributed in that way, .....yes there IS a coat, an exact replica of the 1 given, but in better condition, & as I'm now getting harrassed by EX friend......so far about 20 calls & 8 messages on both phones....I'm probably going to end up giving her that 1 anyway (& telling her to P' off forever)...... even though she knows its not "her" coat & that I am ill, & have bad throat & have lost my voice....she has even called my 7 year old a liar, for telling her that last night, despite her knowing I was ill before all this stupidness started Hmm.....she also is saying that she gave me the coat not so long ago, in front of my DH, which he says is rubbish, as I was wearing it the first night we went out together.........so don't know whats going on with her, but not sane at all

& I'm cross eyed with the replies & getting myself muddled with you too Rockbird, so do feel for the rest of you Grin

but other than that, its getting too silly & bitchy for me now, so I can't be arsed anymore
.......enjoy.......TTFN Wink

This is my favourite thread of all time.

Also, am I right in suspecting that the original WAS real fur and the replacement is fake? And that's why the lender/gifter "has always thought it was real" and it's not?

rockinhippy · 09/09/2010 13:56

Oh, & as for the Funny Fags ...I WISH......who ever has them........PLEASE PASS THEM THIS WAY..........I could do with some stress relief after this mornings events :)

Please, please, please can we have a picture of the coat.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/09/2010 13:59

Well, rockin, there must be some comfort in knowing that the coat is, in fact, replaceable.

So, summary of thread as follows:

  • Op has lamb skin coat
  • People start on animal rights and OP now says it is a fake
  • Op posts details about having to care for fur, implying coat is not a fake, but OP did not want to anger the mumsnet animal rights brigade
  • OP loves coat dearly and does not want to return it
  • Someone suggests looking on Ebay and finding a similar coat to give back to friend instead
  • OP says this is a great idea
  • OP then comes back and says actually she has loast the coat, but she mysteriously now owns a very similar one she is willing to return to friend.

It doesnt take a genius to figure out OP found a similar coat on Ebay, and decides to give this one to friend instead, but realises she has left a trail of her antics on mumsnet and therefore decides to lie to the whole mumsnet collective in order to cover her real-fur-wearing-ebay-buying ass.

Phew.

This has to go into Classics.

And anyone in the RL who says 'I don't understand the appeal of Mumsnet' should be made to read it.

LittleBeads · 09/09/2010 14:27

I don't think you should refuse to give it back (it was her uncles afterall)

AgentZigzag · 09/09/2010 14:28

Whenever I refresh the thread I keep seeing the first words of the OP 'I'll try not to ramble...' Grin
