the thread titles are all so serious and worthy and make me feel frivolous and unsisterly.

HouseOfBamboo · 28/08/2010 22:49

btw I'm not aware of any feminists on the site being irritating loons - those that I've noticed have been pretty thoughtful and articulate.

Janos · 28/08/2010 22:50

What SGM said, with bells on.

And CrackFox...I feel the same way. There are some fiercely intelligent women on there :)

2shoes · 28/08/2010 22:55

thinks I will keep it hidden, just had a look

mittz · 28/08/2010 23:03

Tempted as when I lurk I come away feeling as if I am having my opinions decided for me.

Which is kinda ironical.

There is a lot of MN that I find tough at the moment due it them touching raw nerves.

wukter · 28/08/2010 23:04

Sacharissa - I'm not the shiniest penny in the piggybank but I post there sometimes.
Feminism is not just for the top 5% intelligence-wise, it's for us all, so if I want to say something I will.

All voices matter.
As long as you don't go on to say She Was Asking For It, or It's All Gone To Far Now you should be ok. Grin

Janos · 28/08/2010 23:10

:) wukter

Quite right! Feminism is not the preserve of a super educated elite.

SacharissaCripslock · 28/08/2010 23:10

Thanks, wukter.

I think that there are so many things I had never questioned before and after reading the thread in the feminism topic my opinions are still forming, iykwim, and I don't want to post with lots of waffle. Grin

thedollyridesout · 28/08/2010 23:21

IME folk on there can be quite rude - they tell you to bugger off if they don't like what you're saying.

Janos · 28/08/2010 23:22

That happens all over MN though dolly.

Especially in AIBU!

2shoes · 28/08/2010 23:22

do they own MN?

franklampoon · 28/08/2010 23:23

yanbu. it has lots of pretentious shite mixed in with some good stuff

nameymcnamechange · 28/08/2010 23:23

I've hidden it but I feel v unsisterly about that. So far, none of the thread titles have made me want to post.

chipmonkey · 28/08/2010 23:23

oh for crying out loud!

Didn't you want to vote?

Or own property?

Or be educated?

or take the oral contraceptive pill?

Or have maternity leave?

Or be allowed to stand up against sexual harassment in the workplace without losing your job.

We owe all of the above to feminism.

And if you hide the topic, what are you hiding from?

CerealOffender · 28/08/2010 23:25

i am a feminist i just don't like the feminist topic. i don't think the posters on that topic are solely responsible for gaining women the vote.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 28/08/2010 23:26

they are fond shouting anti-femminist and decry others frequently.

AnyFuleKno · 28/08/2010 23:26

I quite like the feminism threads as a whole, but my goodness there are a lot of threads about rape on active convos just lately and without seeming unsympathetic I am finding mumsnet quite dark just lately.

hiding from all the pretentious shite

chipmonkey · 28/08/2010 23:51

Taking over the boards? It's one topic!

And no, the posters on there are not responsible for gaining us the vote. They are by and large the ones who express gratitude to the women who did gain us the vote.

Perhaps it's the case that those of us who are fortunate in our choice of partner or spouse have less need of the topic than those of us who are less fortunate . Same goes for Relationships. Some men really do believe that they are superior to woman, have the right to hate women simply because they are woman, use women as they please and grind women down to the point where they have no self-esteem.

By all means, if you also despise these oppressed women, hide the topic.

It's easy to be smug.

Tortington · 28/08/2010 23:52

Smile working class MEN & women fought for thier right to vote, as the proletariat. i hate for this to be forgotton. for their lives and their sacrific to be neatly boxed away, forgotton, secondary to rich/ middle class women fightin for sufferage. the right to vote more complex than the pankhurst box and womes right to vote did not come about through them alone.
