friends ds's age 7 and 10
their dad drops them off
asks if I would "throw a packet of crisps at them as they are starving"
I agree thinking to myself -haven't got crisps but will find summat

the kids are horrified that we have no crisps

I ask them what they would have as a snack if they didn't have crisps at home
they looked shocked and said a cornetto but they ALWAYS have crisps

WTF

said no to fruit / crackers / toast (becasue it was brown bread ffs)

ended up finding some white bread -praise the lord

It's your house so you can make it a no-crisp zone if you like, although YABU...NO CRISPS???? Grin

I'm more shocked that the bloke said to throw them some crisps to you, cheeky fucker.

Firawla · 26/08/2010 14:27

no yanbu i don't think it is that weird. we don't have crisps most of the time in the house, if they want a snack they should have whatever you offer and say thank you, they are old enough to be polite at that age imo
also probably do them some good to get used to other snacks than only crisps!

Habbibu · 26/08/2010 14:28

We don't have crisps in the house as a rule - we'd prob gorge ourselves stupid, so we have to make the effort to go to the shop if we want some. YANBU

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 14:28

yabu ..everyone should have crisps in the house especially seabrooks cheese and onion ..too good to waste on kids though ..

pagwatch · 26/08/2010 14:29

YABU
you have to have crisps. It is the law. The Walkers Law , updated from the Golden Crisp law of the 1970s and the attached Smiths amendment.

Of course you don't have to have crisps. And I suspect he just meant - they will be fine with a snack.
And kids have a habit of being shocked that other families are not exactly the same as their. We had a child over who cried and hid under the table when I offered him spinach pasta

"mummy - it was green!"

kickassangel · 26/08/2010 14:29

i only get crisps in if we have friends coming over (posh ones for snacks) & we only have ice-cream, cakes etc for a treat. imo, those things are 'sometimes' food & you can have them when you're out. At home we have real food & snacks are things like fruit or crackers etc.

RunningOutOfIdeas · 26/08/2010 14:30

I don't usually have crisps in the house because any that are here do not last 2 seconds because DH and I would eat them all. So YANBU.

I do think it is a bit odd to deliver children to some one's house saying they are starving. He should have given them a snack first.

verytellytubby · 26/08/2010 14:30

We don't have crisps in our house. I don't need any temptation Grin

Habbibu · 26/08/2010 14:31

You probably offered it with a menacing look, pag.

AgentZigzag · 26/08/2010 14:31

We're having a run on Mini Cheddars at the min, are they strictly a crisp though?

ShinyAndNew · 26/08/2010 14:32

We very rarely have crisps, biscuits, ice cream or chocolate in the house. They are just not necessary imo. I allow the children to eat them. We just buy them as and when. I think keeping multi packs etc in the house just encourages them to gorge. They have to really want crisps in order to get up and walk to the shop for them, rather than just fancy a bag.

Habbibu · 26/08/2010 14:33

Mini Cheddars are crackers.

Habbibu · 26/08/2010 14:34

OP - did you attempt to throw the fruit or crackers? Perhaps it was your method of delivery that was at fault.

undercovamutha · 26/08/2010 14:35

We are a crisp-free house too. Although plenty of breadsticks - do they count?

ProfYaffle · 26/08/2010 14:35

We don't have crisps in the house either, or chocolate and only occasionally have plain digestives in. It's the easiest way to prevent constant mithering for said snacks and I can do without the temptation under my nose too.

AgentZigzag · 26/08/2010 14:37

So really I should put butter, marmite and cheese on them if they're crackers?

ThatDamnDog · 26/08/2010 14:39

Asking you to throw crisps at them = rude in the extreme.

Children of that age refusing food that isn't crisps or Cornetto, FFS = rude in the extreme.

Children refusing offer of fruit/crackers/brown toast = not that hungry Grin

Of course YANBU. I buy Tesco el cheapo crisps by the box and keep them on a high shelf where only DP can reach them, and DS can't even see them. Then DP can get atherosclerosis have some in his lunch box if he wants without DS even knowing they're there.

brimfull · 26/08/2010 14:39

we don't have crisps because I would eat them all and ds would constantly ask for them

to be fair the dad was highly stressed and hadn't had a chance to feed his kids-not bothered about that at all

potplant · 26/08/2010 14:40

I don't buy crisps very often either - mainly because I'd scoff the lot. I have some at the moment because its school holidays and I give the DCs treat food for their packed lunch at holiday club.

I've had 2 packets of Hula Hoops already today so I wont be buying any more soon.

TheCrackFox · 26/08/2010 14:55

We do have crisps but I don't like them very much

mumbar · 26/08/2010 14:58

I don't often have crisps either. Ds not bothered about them and neither am I.

Did laugh last week though when a friend popped over with presents (they'd been away) her dd2 (s) asked for crisps so all dcs had a packet.

Had arranged for them to come for the day 2 days later and dd2 asked for crisps again - when I said I didn't have any sorry (offered alternatives) she said but you had them the other day. Hmm

I explained that theres only 6 packets in a bag and they had 4 of those the other day.

Funny thing was her biggger shock that I only bought the 6 multipack Grin

I guess even as an adult if you have a contant supply of crisps in the house its hard to fathom that others don't.

YADNBU though.

Mahraih · 26/08/2010 15:01

YANBU

I don't have crisps and when DC is born DP and I will have a crisp-free household.

To be fair, this is as much for us as DC. DP and I are grubby-pawed snack-eaters.

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2010 15:06
