friends ds's age 7 and 10
their dad drops them off
asks if I would "throw a packet of crisps at them as they are starving"
I agree thinking to myself -haven't got crisps but will find summat

the kids are horrified that we have no crisps

I ask them what they would have as a snack if they didn't have crisps at home
they looked shocked and said a cornetto but they ALWAYS have crisps

WTF

said no to fruit / crackers / toast (becasue it was brown bread ffs)

ended up finding some white bread -praise the lord

YANBU if you don't like/eat crisps. I do disagree with the posters though who say kids would eat nothing else if there were crisps in the house. I have dozens of packs of crisps in the cupboard, but mainly eaten by me. Kids will ask for a pack occasionally & if it's not too close to meal times I will say fine. If it is I will say no.

I noticed recently when the boys had friends round some of the children were asking please can we have more crisps as though it was really exiting to have a pack of crisps. One boy asked if he could take a pack home. My boys didn't ask for more as they know they are not forbidden snacks.

I think ruling any food as forbidden just makes it more sought after. I also have loads of chocolate, biscuits & ice cream in the house. After dinner the boys can choose a snack of any description but only one. Today they were on a football course and one ds returned with his crisps unopened the other returned with a pack of rolos. I just put them back in the cupboard for another day. Neither are unhealth or overweight and they don't eat nothing but junk & snacks just because they are in the house. Sometimes I have to throw crisps away because they are out of date.

You throw crisps away! Shock

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/08/2010 21:42

listenandlearn - on the other hand I know hardly anyone who has crisps/biscuits etc in the house just as a matter of course :)

We generally don't, largely because I have no willpower and would scoff it all.

Things are not forbidden, but we buy snacks to eat on a particular occasion - normal snacking in this house is fruit or toast with marmite/peanut butter/jam or whatever.

Habbibu · 26/08/2010 21:44

I bake when people come over. No, not smug, I just like baking, and like to have an excuse. So what I do have in the house is the makings of scones, biscuits, chocolate cake, etc, as a rule.

Liv77 · 26/08/2010 21:47

I always have some posh crisps in the cupboard for when my best friend comes round for a slobbing in front of the TV night. If my 2 year old pulls them out the cupboard I just tell him that they are Auntie Kirsty's and he put them back, mind you he's not fussed as he seems to have Pom Bears on tap whenever he's with Nanny.

Like you, maybe ?

seeker · 26/08/2010 23:09

Am loving the idea of sharing a bag of crisps!

rastababi · 26/08/2010 23:30

Yes, REALLY Oblomov. Our shopping budget is ridiculously low (4 of us). I'd love to have snacks/treat food in the house, but it's just not possible right now. Our cupboards are filled with tinned food, lentils, pasta, tuna.

Please may I come live with you? Wink

Oblomov · 27/08/2010 06:48

Yes rasta. I have fluffy blankets, glass of rose and pringles, at the ready for the disapointing last episode of mistresses. come and stay for a bit. Grin

I agree with the sentiment of those who are saying it's a bad idea to forbid foods or label them as 'naughty' or 'unhealthy' - of course it is, forbidden fruit and all that.

But that's not what most non-crisp-multipack-buyers are saying at all! It's not about saying you shouldn't eat them - we eat crisps a lot, but we buy them with lunch in town, or from the co-op next to where DH works (which is also near DD's preschool so we go past a fair bit) - same with chocolate, sweets, cakes and fizzy drinks. It's seems pricier that way but when DH suggested getting multipacks instead we just ate them all really quickly Blush

LittleSilver · 27/08/2010 08:14

If they didn't want fruit/oatcakes/whatever then they weren't hungry.

Simple.

Oblomov · 27/08/2010 08:16

agreed. i hate seeing any food labelled as naughty. or a treat. whats that supposed to mean ?
thats not a healthy or balanced relationship with food.
and if you had a multi pack, you would eat all of them. so that is actually quite serious then.
don't get me wrong. i scan scoff with the best of them. but not being ABLE to have something in the house, is not good lessons for our children, is it ?

BalloonSlayer · 27/08/2010 08:16

mathanxiety I see your cooking chocolate, toothpaste and andrews' liver salts and raise you with the dog's Good Boy Choc Drops.

Not as chocolatey as I'd hoped, but hey I was fourteen and very VERY hungry for chocolate.

On the plus side I have very glossy hair and am alert, obedient and bounding with vitality.

FellatioNelson · 27/08/2010 08:24

My sister's children have always been like this. They have always looked a bit bewildered and cross if there is no fizzy pop available for mealtimes. And no pudding except fruit and/or yogurt.

When visiting, my sister has been known to go out the shop and buy bottles of coke because they don't seem to be able to get through a day without it.

From the age of about two onwards 'teatime' for them would always mean (radioactive glowing) lemon curd sandwiches on white sliced bread, and some form of cake, like jam tarts, maybe some preformed ham, and a pile of crisps and maybe a fromage frais. Every night. I don't ever remember fruit, or carrot sticks being offered.

I know this for a fact because we spent loads of time together when the DCs were little.

She would go out midweek between shops to get 'essentials' like biscuits and crisps. They are all teeenagers now, but I can honestly say they really did have the most shocking diet ever. They eat a bit better now they are older, but I think if you'd tapped into their veins as children, you would have siphoned off pure sugar, E numbers, and hydrogenated fats.

Oblomov · 27/08/2010 08:24

AnnoyingOrange, what else does your dh buy from Costco. God I love Costco. Bulk buying. boxes of 24 cookies, trays of 16 croissants. boxes of 48 crisps. bags of 24 chicken breasts.

Fab. Might ask if i can move into their summer house or tent that they have on display and just live there permanantly, actually. Grin

minxofmancunia · 27/08/2010 08:26

No crisps here as i would be a blob as I'm addicted to them, seriously, i used to eat about 5 packets a night when I did night shifts. i also used to stop on the way home from work after a day shift and eat 2 packets of frazzles in the car really quickly. My car is littered with frazzles packets Blush.

Also whilst I don't mind dd having the odd packet she'd never leave it alone if she knew we had crisps in, my head would get chewed off with her pestering me all the time. She has a packet after ballet and after she's been in the gym creche. We do seem to have a cupboard full of sweets and twiglets but no biscuits. We're a bit shit for snacks really, should make more effort.

Oblomov · 27/08/2010 08:28

"you would have siphoned off pure sugar, E numbers, and hydrogenated fats."
Nelson. that is so very funny.
I want to be like that. shame i keep giving my kids so much healthy stuff and only water, to balance it out. must stop all the healthy nonsense actually, and move on , to white bread and radioactive bright yellow stuff.
ha ha. love it.

seeker · 27/08/2010 08:28

Oh, just turn off the screens, chuck the kids outside on their bikes and buy crisps!

FellatioNelson · 27/08/2010 08:30

I try to limit the amount of crisps and biscuits in the house because my kids can't be trusted not to get greedy with them, and I'm trying to encourage my 11 year old to lose weight. But then I get it in the neck from the older two, who are both skinny. They don't see why they should be 'punished' just because their brother is fat.Hmm
