friends ds's age 7 and 10
their dad drops them off
asks if I would "throw a packet of crisps at them as they are starving"
I agree thinking to myself -haven't got crisps but will find summat

the kids are horrified that we have no crisps

I ask them what they would have as a snack if they didn't have crisps at home
they looked shocked and said a cornetto but they ALWAYS have crisps

WTF

said no to fruit / crackers / toast (becasue it was brown bread ffs)

ended up finding some white bread -praise the lord

Our house is a crisp free zone - I tried the high shelf thing but have so little will power have been known to brave the spiders in the shed to retrieve the ladders to get the crisps and then cos it was such hard work scoff the whole multipack! Blush

2old4thislark · 26/08/2010 15:06

YANBU

We are now a crisp free house. Once I stopped making packed lunches I stopped buying crisps. Mainly because my DH would eat them and for some reason I found that irritating Confused maybe it because he doesn't need the calories!

We are biscuit free and almost chocolate free as the pre holiday diet starts next week.

I remember the look of horror from one of my friends DC's on discovering we didn't have any biscuits years ago...he was 2!

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 26/08/2010 15:10

posh crisps for a once in a while snack in front of the TV for me and DH, or with dips and veg sticks if we have people over -which is hardly ever--

normal crisps for picnics when on hols, or OCCASSIONALLY in term time - the kids get them in their lunch on a school trip day when everyone has a packed lunch and everyone else has crisps

other than that they sometimes get a pack between them in their lunch about once a term meanmummy or very occassionaly as an afterschool snack if tea is going to be later than usual - but they will eat a couple of pieces of fruit each too

yellowflowers · 26/08/2010 15:21

And as if crisps fill them up! ridiculous and rude.

YANBU. I NEVER have a stock of crisps in the house because we would never achieve the critical mass required for it to be called "a stock". No point putting crisps in the cupboard round here, they're out and eaten as soon as they're put in.

deaddei · 26/08/2010 16:37

Perpetually Annoyed- you are my twin.
Crisps are a treat, and I never buy cakes or biscuits- dd occasionally bakes.
In the holidays, things relax more, as I like a coffee out a few mornings a week and have become addicted to Portuguese custard tarts.
But I am already weaning myself off them, only having a flat white and NOTHING else this morning, ready to start the new term.

mitochondria · 26/08/2010 16:50

We have crisps in the house, because if we don't, husband will buy them from the corner shop near his work instead and it's more expensive.
Children don't get them often - we share a packet at the weekend with lunch sometimes.

Are eating more at the moment because I am collecting the packets to make into handbags.

GrendelsMum · 26/08/2010 16:54

No crisps in our house. Hungry people can eat fruit or toast with peanut butter on. YANBU.

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 16:56

We currently have McCoys, Quavers, and Monster Munch in the house (the last two were on 2 for 1 on multipacks at Co-op)

But there's no reason why you must have them if you don't want them.

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2010 17:01

Cheeky bastard to deliver his DCs to you "starving" (a word that makes me froth at the mouth unless it is used to describe actual starvation.) Why the hell could he not "throw a packet of crisps at them" his self before leaving the house that they could eat in the car.

And the oh-so-casualness of the line "throw a packet of crisps at them" making it sound so easy when actually he is saying "I expect you to feed my children for me because I am too lazy to meet their basic needs."

We have crisps in the house, but bizarrely they are usually only eaten with a sandwich. A pack of crisps on its own is, oooh, > and we eat loads of crap - funny the odd routines you get into, isn't it?

perhaps the dc are hungry as their father keeps throwing packets of crisps at them instead of cooking a meal and feeding them adequetly Wink

In answer to the question of crisps in the house - No, nore biccies as they get eaten to quickly by all of us - so we don't buy [frin]

But we do occasionaly make some instead and cake and freeze it for munchin moments

deaddei · 26/08/2010 17:06

Actually, I oould murder a cheese and onion and cress sandwich with salad cream.

MadameCastafiore · 26/08/2010 17:11

We have a crisp drawer in our house - kids ask if they want some and if they have been good and eaten a good balanced diet I let them have some - they are not the first thing they go for at parties and never choose them for a treat if we go into town - they have a normal balanced approach to food where nothing is banned - it is just eaten in moderation.

FFS why would anyone ban food from their house (well except deep fried blowfish!!))??

Maybe the father thought you were normal and had things like crisps in the house?

catherinedenerve · 26/08/2010 17:11

No crisps in the house ever.
Well, unless DH buys a bumper bag, but they don't last long enough to say that we 'have" them. Crisps have been the new thing for us this (very stressy) summer, this is not normal and will stop soon. It will. Crisps are very good stress food aren't they? crr, crr, crr, crr, crr, crr

Mitocondria, you can not say something like "collecting the packets to make into handbags" and just go away, it's very intriguing, would you mind elaborating?

miracled · 26/08/2010 17:15

Crisps IMHO should be of a Walkers Sensations sweet chilli variety and taken with wine once the DC's are asleep. I'd love a crisp handbag!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 26/08/2010 17:16

I also buy a big box of cheapo crisps that are "daddy's crisps" to stop DH from spending all his pennies in the vending machine at work. The kids and I rarely eat them. Biscuits and cakes are, however, a different story as I love baking.

I have had the same incredulous looks from DD's friends when I told them we don't have juice (ie squash) in the house.

lady007pink · 26/08/2010 17:36

I don't have crisps, cakes or sweets in my house. The children would eat nothing else if they were let!

YANBU, your house your rules!

Vulgar · 26/08/2010 17:39

I hate crisps so we never have them.

Nasty greasy noisy things. Posh crisps even worse.

But have a cake problem instead. . .

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 26/08/2010 17:40

'Throw some crisps at them' when they are hungry! Hmm

We have a crisp free house (most of the time) because I will eat them so I don't buy them.

ethelina · 26/08/2010 17:45

We only rarely have crisps, dont like them really. A pack of six would probably last a couple of months.

domeafavour · 26/08/2010 17:49

no crisps, no biscuits
never had any when we were growing up either
i love crisps, would probably just eat them all

Litchick · 26/08/2010 17:51

Rolls on floor at the smuggery and back slapping of having no crisps.

We have a cupbaord full of crisps, biscuits, chocolates and sweets. And..gasp...sometimes we eat them.

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 17:54

whats wrong with a packet of crisps ffs
