friends ds's age 7 and 10
their dad drops them off
asks if I would "throw a packet of crisps at them as they are starving"
I agree thinking to myself -haven't got crisps but will find summat

the kids are horrified that we have no crisps

I ask them what they would have as a snack if they didn't have crisps at home
they looked shocked and said a cornetto but they ALWAYS have crisps

WTF

said no to fruit / crackers / toast (becasue it was brown bread ffs)

ended up finding some white bread -praise the lord

If I had crisps in the house I'd only eat them.
DD would probably end up having a packet every day - and me maybe more.

ProfYaffle · 26/08/2010 17:58

Lol @ Litchick, Yes, my lack of willpower and lazy parenting makes me incredibly smug!

Also, we were poor growing up and never had any treaty type food in the house, pop, crisps, cakes etc so it then became normal and I fell into the habit when I started shopping for myself.

Gibbon · 26/08/2010 18:00

Everey house should have some kttle crisps tucked away somewhere, why only last night I grazed my way through half a bag.

Loshad · 26/08/2010 18:00

doubt it's a question of smuggery litchick - i occasionally buy crisps, at which point my four dss' and dh devour the entire multipack before it hits the cupboards. We would virtually never have crisps "in stock" because a pack of six lasts approx 5 minutes after landing. Teenage male children will eat vast amounts of food and if i bought a pack of 18 i suspect it's fate would be the same hence six it is. Ditto biscuits, I love biscuits, so i don't buy them as am greedy mare with little will power of an evening.

minipie · 26/08/2010 18:06

My parents never had any crisps, sweets, biscuits or chocolate available in the house

Our snacks were rice cakes, nuts and raisins or sunflower seeds

I now have a Wotsits fetish.

ethelina · 26/08/2010 18:07

Oh we do have chocolate, biscuits, cake (when i can be arsed to make it) etc, just neither me nor dh have much of a crisp habit - UNLESS of course it involves cheese & onion crisp sandwich - then i admit i will dabble.

YANBU. We don't have any food other than core meals in our house. No crisps, chocolate, cakes, biscuits, crackers, ice cream, sweets, lollies. Nothing.

Wish we did though Blush

mathanxiety · 26/08/2010 18:12

Nothing of the kind here as everything like that is fallen upon and devoured by DS who is 17, within two minutes of arrival.

The real issue is the rudeness of the father and his children though.

I once made the mistake of having a child over to play with DD1 who was horrified that I didn't have sliced white bread or her favourite brands of yogurt and peanut butter ready for her when lunchtime came around, and not shy about telling me how surprised she was and how much she really thought I should make an effort to get her something she liked to eat.

(Minipie -- we resorted to eating cooking chocolate, toothpaste and Andrews liver salts Blush)

stickyj · 26/08/2010 18:15

None of you have teenagers, do you?!Grin

BoojaB · 26/08/2010 18:16

YANBU!

minipie · 26/08/2010 18:17

math oh yes the cooking chocolate! I now have a taste for very dark bitter chocolate.

listenandlearn · 26/08/2010 18:18

god am shocked that so many dont have crisps, biscuits etc

here theres always something like that, all the kids in the neighbourhood love it here, now i know why,

if so many households dont buy "treats" why are they said to be big sellers,i must by half the stock thats it

i remember a 5pack of trios had to last the week in my childhood house i promised this would NEVER be the case in my own house

BoojaB · 26/08/2010 18:20

Stickyj, I have a 16 year old and no junk food in the house.

He must be getting his salt fixes in town somewhere! :)

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2010 18:24

oh yes teens live here Grin they have pocket money and wages so can buy their own if they want

Loshad · 26/08/2010 18:36

oh i loved trios - can you still get them?

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 18:38

junk food a plenty in this house ..oh well teenage ds is skinney as a rake tho Wink

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 26/08/2010 18:39

YANBU. and the dad was ruuuude.

why does somebody always wade in say these types of threads are smug? Hmm I don't think it is. they don't keep crisps in the house, big deal.

we don't have coffee or alcohol in the house. people might think we're virtuous and/or smug, but no, we're just really fussy and don't really like those things!

WRT biscuits, crisps, chocolate etc - I don't get a lot in, purely for my own sake as I have no will power... I keep making the mistake of buying packs of jam tarts with my Asda delivery. they do not last very long Blush

hidetheelephant · 26/08/2010 18:39

When we go the weekly shop I buy a 6 pack of salt and shake crisps. If they go before the next time I go shopping I don't get more, so we don't always have crisps in but we do quite regularly.

ThatDamnDog · 26/08/2010 18:50

But crisps and biscuits are so expensive and I'd really much rather we turned to fruit or yoghurt or a bit of toast than something full of salt and fat and of absolutely zero nutritional value. Is that smug? Confused

[waddles off to rustle up another weetabix fruit loaf and ponder the mysteries of What Goes On In Other People's Houses]

listenandlearn · 26/08/2010 18:53

trios dont exists anymore i think, dont do the blue uniteds either, dam shame me thinks

Piccalilli2 · 26/08/2010 18:53

I buy hula hoops if we have a long car journey cos it keeps them quiet or if we're having an outing or picnic. I buy hula hoops specifically because the kids like them but I don't, wouldn't trust myself around 'proper' crisps although do get them in when people are coming over.

listenandlearn · 26/08/2010 18:57

well must be me and the ilk i know,i dont know ANYBODY that DOSENT have crisps and biscuits in their home

Not saying there falling out the cupboards and help urself when you want but do find it strange so many of you dont

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 18:59

I don't no any body that doesn't either listenandlearn ..we must know the same peopleGrin

sloanypony · 26/08/2010 19:02

I dont have crisps - the reason really is that I dont eat them myself, so I wouldn't get them in specially for the children.

I do have some Dove's wholewheat digestives (wholewheat because they hold their shape better when making my digestive biscuit cake which I did last night for a coffee thing I have tomorrow, these are the leftovers)

Other fun stuff I have in the cupboard is a bag of buttons (treat size) about half empty, some high lights chocolate mousse, and a couple of packets of those Natural Sweet company dinosaur things, not because they are natural but because they are delicious. Kids are lucky if they see these as DH has a penchant

I have no cheese at the moment, only stale Jacobs cream crackers, only Hovis best of both in terms of bread, no butter or spread (apart from the unsalted left over from digestive biscuit cake above) and very little else worthy of excitement.

Needless to say I was embarrased before when lactating friend earlier begged asked for a snack and could only offer her Jordans muslie bar (free sample from Ocado) and some grapes.

Need to go shopping badly
