friends ds's age 7 and 10
their dad drops them off
asks if I would "throw a packet of crisps at them as they are starving"
I agree thinking to myself -haven't got crisps but will find summat

the kids are horrified that we have no crisps

I ask them what they would have as a snack if they didn't have crisps at home
they looked shocked and said a cornetto but they ALWAYS have crisps

WTF

said no to fruit / crackers / toast (becasue it was brown bread ffs)

ended up finding some white bread -praise the lord

Crisp-free here too. If they aren't in the house, I can't eat them (and the nearest shop is 8 miles away). Anyone's hungry outside of meals, there's toast or fruit or weetabix

sloanypony · 26/08/2010 19:04

All the more worrying because she brought a bottle of wine which seems to be leaking, fast, and I might need a worthy snack later on.

ThatDamnDog · 26/08/2010 19:04

Yeah BUT it's amazing what constitutes a snack once you've had a whole bottle of wine Grin

listenandlearn · 26/08/2010 19:10

i don't have crisps in the house. Dh does (they are placed out of my reach)

he plies me with them when i am drunk. (or st least, have had a drink)

ChunkyBrewster · 26/08/2010 19:15

When I was 8 and my grandfather passed away, my Dad came outside to tell us children the sad news. With tears in his eyes, he broke it to us gently before handing us all a packet of crisps. I remember thinking "Yes, yes, very sad about Grandad.... but bloomin heck CRISPS hurrah!"

Snobear4000 · 26/08/2010 19:19

With thousands of things to buy to eat, YANBU to not have any one item in your house.

Crisps are not a staple.

Again, repeat after me everyone,

Crisps are not a staple.

pointydog · 26/08/2010 19:27

what do you want for tea
I want crisps

One of the best song lyrics ever.

pointydog · 26/08/2010 19:28

And of course yabnbu. You can have whatever you want in teh house. You could have pickled clams in teh house and it wouldn't be unreasonable.

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 26/08/2010 19:29

snobear I am hearing you say that in the accent of Bruce the shark from Finding Nemo! :o

and that's a good point about there being so much bloomin choice. We've had a few confused looks from DH's kids when they stay, because our kitchen is tiny we tend to cycle through things like spreads - so one week we have jam, but the next we have nutella instead.

never been a problem though. they have all this stuff loads at their house, but they don't complain if we don't have exactly what they fancy, they are perfectly happy going for an apple.

AliGrylls · 26/08/2010 19:36

No they are not a staple but I love them and always keep them in the house.

Without crisps I can't survive. I tested it once and I put on half a stone over 40 days because I was crisp deprived.

I always use the phrase "a little won't hurt" and I hope this allows my as yet unborn child and DS to enjoy their food and not get too hung up about "good" and "bad" foods.

AnnoyingOrange · 26/08/2010 19:43

my dh came back from costco with a box of 48 pkts of crisps in it

I was Shock

bilblio · 26/08/2010 19:47

No YANBU, we only buy crisps if we're camping or having a picnic lunch. They wouldn't last 2 minutes if we bought them regularly.

I'm currently getting annoyed by all the neighbours kids bringing treats round for my DD (chocolate biscuits, cheese strings, sweets) just before tea!
DD is 3 and thinks strawberries are treats.

brimfull · 26/08/2010 19:54

not smugness here, just weakness when it comes to crisps and shite
and yes to teenager , her boyfriend is also staggered we dont have crisps. I buy shit white bread specifically for him Grin

I think a lot of people - not just on this thread, but these types of thread generally - think too much about food.

I go shopping, buy stuff, bring it home, and we eat it. Sometimes it's cooked from scratch, sometimes it's stuff you bung in the oven. DS doesn't eat all the crisps on one day, because he's not allowed. Children ALWAYS freak when they go to other people's houses and they have different food - whether it is crisps or avocados (from the child of my friend who makes her own guacamole Grin)

mitochondria · 26/08/2010 20:07

No teenagers here. Except the overgrown one that I'm married to, who eats a lot of crisps.

Catherine - Crisp packet handbags - see here:

myzerowaste.com/2010/04/from-bags-to-riches/

That is NOT ME in the picture, that's just a link I Googled to show you what one looks like.

And we don't eat that many crisps either - I collect them from other people. Have yet to be brave enough to accost crisp-eating strangers and ask for their packets though.

TiggyD · 26/08/2010 20:25

No crisps in the house?!

What do you do when you have fat common people visiting?

Oblomov · 26/08/2010 20:30

I have atleast 30 odd packets of crisps int eh house at all times.
But my kids eat all fruit, pate, crackers, anything else going, as a snack asweell.

speaks volumes about what they eat at home.
But no crisps in the house AT ALL ?
You people are WIERD.

Oblomov · 26/08/2010 20:36

I am truley shocked at all the ppoosts saying we don't have chocolate, crsips, biscuits etc int he house.
REALLY ?
I have 5 choices of biscuits for visitors in my house. you want a chocolate biscuit ? would you like a :
classic, a penguin, a mint kitkat, warnocks caramle craips or whatever they are called.
in bisuits we have hobnobs, dead flies, custard creams etc etc int eh biscuit barrell.
crisps ? walkers cheese and onion, mccoys salt and vinegar, hula hoops antyhting else on BOGOF.

I also have 4 different choices of fruit, (say gala melon, bananas, apples, strawberries, satsumas)brie, pate crackers, bread sticks, etc etc to offer.

All of this is on offer PERMANENTLKY. you would NEVER ever come to my house to find me without these things.

WHAT EXACTLY do you people have in your cupboards and fridges ?

LittleSarah · 26/08/2010 20:40

Man I love crisps.

I also have loads of chocolate biscuits as granny in law (who lives with us) loves them.

I also have lots of healthy things and do restrict dd's consumption of said crisps and biscuits.

If you don't do crisps, fair enough, but man, I love crisps.

listenandlearn · 26/08/2010 20:40

oblomov exactly my points earlier, good to hear theres other munchers here

usualsuspect · 26/08/2010 20:49

All the dirty snack eaters round to oblomovs Grin

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 20:55

Right, which way to Oblomov's?

sloanypony · 26/08/2010 20:58

That all sounds great Oblmov, count me in.

I tend to do shopping bit at a time.

Okay for instance, I like to drink cans of drink - not loads, but I tend to have one around lunch time and one with dinner. DH does too, so we have a good 4 cans a day. Yet, there are none in the fridge, because I fecked up my last order and ran out.

Same with the cheese - I'd never normally not have cheese, but had to give my child a wedge of festy old parmesan that smelled of feet before as I've run out of cheddar and mini babybells.

So its all rather grim at the mo.

But I dont eat crisps, ever, just dont "get" them (not british that might be a clue) so I wouldnt' think to buy them "oh I know, lets try them on some crisps this week!!" etc...

Sure, as teens or even preteens I'm damn sure they will request them and I might well get them then.

Biscuits, only the sad hessian-sandal-weaving knit your own breastmilk digestives but got the CHOCOLATE DIGESTIVE CAKE winking at me from the fridge...mmmmmm
