I am referring to this; www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11061296

and yes, I am totally aware that the police and government are to blame too but we expect governments and to an extent police, to be corrupt.

I am saying this as a RC too. I am fucking shocked at the amount of revolting crap that the church seem to get away with. Covering up paedophiles/abusers, bombers and who knows what else.

Why are they never made accountable?

Og blimey daftpunk. Seriously - it's embarassing...

seeker · 24/08/2010 21:55

In case anyone on here doesn't realize it, daftpunk is an active supporter of the BNP and openly hoped for greater BNP representation at the last election. If you choose to debate with her, you need to know the sort of person you are debating with.

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:55

And another thing.. I really sick of funding your schools!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 24/08/2010 21:57

dp, I wouldn't dream of lying to get into "your" schools, but I'd like my money to stop paying for them.

I would home ed rather than send my kids to a Catholic school.

daftpunk · 24/08/2010 21:57

oh jesus...do catholics not pay taxes then..?

chibi · 24/08/2010 21:57

what i am saying is that for catholics it is a bit more complicated than 'leave the church'

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:59

chibi I am not a UK citizen (waits for the Daftpunk to tell me to fuck off out of her coutry) but in fairness to those who are.. renouncing citizenship is not quite the same, nor as simple and not always possible.

Also most people are sayign that if you are going to support catholicism that you should make an effort within the religion for positive change.

Many UK citizens have tried to make changes in the way the government handles situations, you can't do that as effectivly if you are not a citizen of the UK

EddieIzzardismyhero · 24/08/2010 22:01

Of course Catholics pay taxes. Doesn't justify faith schools. Whole other argument.

Heracles · 24/08/2010 22:01

"I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its churches, has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world."

Bertrand Russell

happiestblonde · 24/08/2010 22:03

applauds chibi for a bit of well needed rationality

TheFallenMadonna · 24/08/2010 22:03

Really a whole other argument. And not all Catholics agree with or use Faith schools btw...

daftpunk · 24/08/2010 22:07

We want our children in schools that teach them our way...we don't want homosexuality promoted (for example)...and it's not just catholics..it's all faith schools.....show me a muslim school that promotes homosexuality...

and if we weren't in our own schools we'd be in yours....even worse I would have thought.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/08/2010 22:08

Please do not say "we" daftpunk. Please.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 24/08/2010 22:08

I know Fallen, but without wanting to get all Basil Fawlty on you, she started it!

Heracles · 24/08/2010 22:08

"So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence."

Bertrand Russell

squigglywig · 24/08/2010 22:08

How in fuck's name do you promote homosexuality? And are they really doing it in non-Catholic schools?

Really. Get it together.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/08/2010 22:09

I know! I am battling on all fronts I think...

chibi · 24/08/2010 22:09

*Many UK citizens have tried to make changes in the way the government handles situations, you can't do that as effectivly if you are not a citizen of the UK

frankly renouncing citizenship and immigrating isn't necessarily all that complicated either, I and most of my family managed it (not all to the same countries either)

and yet most uk citizens don't immigrate as a result of their government's history of atrocities

as far as i can see the uk has form when it comes to this sort of thing, so why isn't everyone bailing out?

if it is reasonable to say that i am morally equivalent to a rapist and that i support child abuse by going to church, it is just as reasonable to say that if uk citizens don't renounce citizenship and flee the country they are the equivalent of genocidal colonialist imperialist murderers

Ispy · 24/08/2010 22:09

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 24/08/2010 22:10

Oh, it's all so tedious dp. So tedious. All the 'we', 'you', 'us'. The tragic division of religion which Nothern Ireland spells out so well.

Why on earth would I have any objection to Catholics attending 'my' schools? Don't be so ridiculous.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 24/08/2010 22:11

Oops, I meant "Northern" Ireland Blush.

Breton1900 · 24/08/2010 22:12

Heracles: Excellent quote. Although I'd go one further than Russell and say that Religion has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress and rationalism!

Chibi, I'm saying you should attempt to make change within your chosen religion. You must belive there are changes to be made? I believe every citizen should make attempts to be the change with in their government, either by voting or protesting.
