I am referring to this; www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11061296

and yes, I am totally aware that the police and government are to blame too but we expect governments and to an extent police, to be corrupt.

I am saying this as a RC too. I am fucking shocked at the amount of revolting crap that the church seem to get away with. Covering up paedophiles/abusers, bombers and who knows what else.

Why are they never made accountable?

Oh Daftpunk, from the BNP is back! What a top-drawer example of Catholicism you are.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/08/2010 21:15

I am a secularist actually.

I've written to my archbishop and spoken to another bishop, plus of course my parish priest, to express my opinion about what should happen to the people involved in the cover up. I am a very bad catholic though, so you weren't asking me.

I'm also thinking of leaving the church, but it isn't as easy as all that...

LadyBiscuit · 24/08/2010 21:15

I think people are just interested to know what the people who attend RC churches are doing to prevent the cover ups happening DP. A fair question I think

frogs · 24/08/2010 21:17

Oh yawn. "Catholic church is not perfect." News, much?

In response to your question, Yuno:

Oxford CW

St Joseph's Hospice

Dodoma

Las Casas Institute

CAFOD

Helder Camara

and many more. Doesn't make such good headlines, though.

daftpunk · 24/08/2010 21:18

Hmm snobear4000, & you sound really reasonable and level headed..

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:21

Because daftpunk we (everyone else) suffers for your religion. Why should we? I'm sick of the pope answering to no one.

In what way are you suffering...?

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:29

We pay for your pope to visit.

The world's children have been put at risk by your religion.

Your religion has wormed its way in to every conceivable section of politics that I can imagine.

Your religion dictates that people in developing countries do not receive HIV information and prevention, causing further outbreak which we all suffer from.

Your religion also stops women in many countries form having safe and reliable access to abortions and contraception.

Your religion also contributes to the idea that women are less than men, and not as important in the eyes of god, and deserving of fewer rights.

It also ignores the rights of homosexuals

So uh in a lot ways actually Hmm

Frogs - am I right to assume that you believe that the perceived 'good works' of the catholic church cancel out the horrors of the abuse and murders perpetrated by some of it's members ? Do you really find the subjects of abuse and murder 'yawnsome' ?

I'm with Maryz. I am a Catholic. You cannot blame catholics for the actions of an evil few in the same way you cannot blame all Muslims for the actions of suicide bombers. I don't know what the daftpunk BNP references are about. Seriously - this whole business is absolutely hideous and unforgivable but these people are not 'the catholic church' and you should not expect people to give up a religion because of some terrible people within it.

Snobear4000 · 24/08/2010 21:43

All sorts of people suffer at the hands of the church. Such as the many millions in central and southern Africa denied proper education about HIV prevention because of Catholic influence there.

The many children taken into care by Catholic institutions who were subsequently raped by priests, they suffered.

And if you want to go back in time, all the "witches", homosexuals, heretics and blasphemers who were hung, burned, flayed, drowned and disemboweled for their "sins". I believe they suffered.

Children with mental illness are still tortured, sometimes killed by priests practicing exorcisms rather than seeking medical help. I reckon they suffered as well.

daftpunk · 24/08/2010 21:44

Re; points; 3) 5) 6) & 7) - You could cross out the word catholic and replace it with just about any other religion...

Point 1)...I have to pay for 100's of things I'm not happy with on a regular basis...so point 1) is ridiculous.

point 2)...slight exaggeration...

as for point 3)...I watched a programme once about prostitutes in Africa. Men wanted sex without protection, (it was available) they actually preferred it that way, even knowing the risks....so stop blaming the catholic church for everything...makes you look like a fool tbh.

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:46

maryz I believe if you support a cause and make up the members of a cause you are responsible for change within that organization (assuming changes need to be made).

In the same way you have many muslim clerics choosing to root out fundamentalism in their communities. Every average catholic needs to stand up and say, not in my backyard thanks. I also personally feel that in the west (especially Europe) Catholisim is too entrenched in normal life, where as Islam, and many other religions just don't affect me as strongly.

Also daftpunk asked why catholicsm cause my suffering it was in response to her question.

Ispy · 24/08/2010 21:47

Here's some light reading for you daftpunk

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commission_to_Inquire_into_Child_Abuse

The entire commission report is available online. Left me sleepless for two nights after reading it. (I grew up in Holy Catholic Ireland but luckily was not abused myself)

'Suffer the little children, to come onto me'.

I believe leaving the church is the answer. Why would anyone want to stay within an 'organisation' this ill. Not I. I'm off to pastures new, holding my children firmly by their hands.

I don't have words to describe the depth of my emotion towards the Church.

sanielle · 24/08/2010 21:48

"makes you look like a fool tbh."

No, it makes you look deluded. Thanks though

I'm sorry but it does...putting it down to you not knowing much about other religions....

TheFallenMadonna · 24/08/2010 21:50

Are you in the UK? I don't think catholicism is entrenched in life here.

I have expressed my opinion to the hierarchy, as I said above. I don't feel like it's much TBH. I think most rank and file catholics feel similar.

I'd be happy for the pope not to visit. I'm very ambivalent about him. Actually, I'm not ambivalent - I am as I said a very bad catholic. Not a rapist or child abuser, or murderer for that matter though.

chibi · 24/08/2010 21:52

i am assuming all posting are uk citizens

in that case, have you renounced british citizenship yet over the uk governmentès role in

colonialist atrocities in kenya
the transatlantic slave trade
cultural genocide in the americas
exploitation murder and pillage in colonies
unwarranted invasion of iraq with the deaths of untold innocents etc

just to name a few things

if not, why not? is it because you completely support these acts? obviously anyone who hasn't renounced their citizenship is clearly as guilty as those who carried out these acts

and while you're at it please justify and explain exactly how you are working to protest and prevent such activities by the uk government in future

daftpunk · 24/08/2010 21:53

I'm glad you think this way about the catholic church...might stop you all lying to get into our schools...
