To Think that Babies don't Belong in Super-Swanky Restaurants?

I love babies (especially on toast). Also love the integrated Mediterranean-like culture over here that enfolds babies into everyday life (babies with meatballs? babies on marinated lamb?)

However, I still think there are some places Babies don't Belong, and one of these places is a make-up and high-heels uber swanky restaurant! Yesterday, DH and I (very over-excitedly) went out for only the second time since DC2 (3 months), and there, slap bang in the middle of the posh joint, was a four/five month old baby!! It was very delicious-looking, but I can't help but wish it hadn't been there...

So, Am I Being Unreasonable?!

Gonzales that is probably true. I find it quite hard work keeping my children quiet etc , not disturbing any other person. and this is only is basic restaurants. can't think of an example. somewhere like Tony Roma's where they serve reasonable ribs. not posh not scummy. I am just very very conscious of not disturbing anyone else. and this makes it a bit stressful.
I do enjoy eating with dh a whole lot more.

I was not saying people with small children should be reduced to eating in vile holes such as Bella Pasta or Giraffe. There are plenty of good restaurants, and gastopubs, which are eminently suitable for young kids. Just NOT the Le Gavroche, Fat Duck type places (except at lunchtime).

I am a bit . Now if I had the chance to go out for a night with dh in a great posh restaurant, I would not even see the other customers I would certainly enjoy myself greatly! Why would anyone look arround and let their evening get spoilt because a child is present .If I understand OP correctly, child in question was not disturbing yet his/her being there was enough to spoil the evening. Why?

swanandduck · 26/07/2010 13:07

Well, if the baby didn't do anything except look adorable I don't really see the problem. I think maybe we all tense up a bit when we see small children in expensive restaurants because we've all had experience of inconsiderate or downright stupid parents who ignore their screaming babies or noisy toddlers and allow them to ruin everyone else's meal. So we're kinda waiting for that to happen and automatically think 'oh no' when we see a baby in a high chair with its parents beaming proudly at it.

Hi gorionine! Can't remember if I've chatted to you since I name-changed...we met on a thread about how gross it was to wash up without rinsing...does that ring a bell?

FluffyDonkey · 26/07/2010 14:52

OMG I read that as "baRbies" don't belong...as though children should only bring "posh" toys to restaurants!

I need to get some sleep.

gorionine · 26/07/2010 16:18
