Hello and welcome. I’m glad you’ve found your way here. We are a bunch of people who are trying to give up and keep off alcohol. No judgement, just honest support and kindness.
The original thread was started by @drybird2020 in 2020 and we have plenty of veterans and newer members who can offer advice, solidarity and signposting. You are welcome here, whether you post several times a day, once or twice and then never again, or if you only just come to read but have no intention of ever posting.

Whatever your stage on the AF journey, and whatever you’re going through, someone here will have gone through it too. We love to celebrate your successes of whatever shape and size - and will support you when things get challenging. We get it, we've been there too. You're here because you are strong and want to pull free. However ashamed and wretched you are feeling right now, as you read this sentence, I can absolutely guarantee that someone here has felt exactly as you do now and knows what you are enduring. It can change. You are not shameful. You are strong and you CAN do this.

All we ask is that you’re genuinely trying to abstain. We don't encourage moderation-only here, as it can be triggering for some to read. If you’re looking to moderate your drinking rather than quitting it altogether then MN has another long-running and very active moderation/abstaining thread that’s always near the top on the alcohol support board. Lots of fine support there from those worthy people too. Keep trying. Sobriety may not be easy - but I guarantee you that it is worth it.

I started trying to give up drink in 2018, succeeded (mostly) in 2019 but had a few “wobbles”, one of which led me here in April 2023. I still struggle sometimes but the posters on this thread have been an absolute godsend of wisdom, support and encouragement, along with my dog - known here as Sid (not his real name), and they keep me going. I hope you find strength and comfort here too. This thread and its wonderful posters has been a lifesaver to many, and have certainly seen me through many good and not-so-good days.

These books were particularly helpful to me and I still go back to them from time to time: The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley (Amazon - Sober Diaries) and The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray (Amazon - Unexpected Joy). Others have found This Naked Mind by Annie Grace (Amazon - This Naked Mind) helpful. There are Apps that help track your AF journey, including Reframe and the ones I use, I Am Sober and TryDry. Podcasts can also be helpful. I have found One for the Road by Sober Dave to be a good listen. But different things work for different people. Feel free to post and ask. There is solidarity, wisdom and support here. This is a safe space where your voice will be heard, understood and valued.

Evenings are drawing in, the season of hot chocolate approaches. Power up with your favourite anthem (The ever-fabulous Dolly is reminding us "Better Get To Livin'"; and the Wilson Phillips girls "Hold On" in hot pursuit) and find your safe space here. Pull up a chair, and make yourself at home. It's going to be alright. x

Sending you love and solidarity over the steering wheel @CrazyCatMam - so sorry you're having a crappy day. Are you able to remove phone/WiFi privileges temporarily from your DD (change the home WiFi password?) so that there are tangible consequences for poor behaviour? I'm sorry that I cannot offer more in the way of practical advice.

But I can send you Sid, reaching out to you and offering you his paw of love and comfort.

Keep going. You're not a bad mum. You're amazing and doing your best, which is actually Very Good Indeed. xxx💐

I never thought about never having had alcohol in this house, I guess I’ll now have to keep it that way!

FiloPasty · Yesterday 21:32

Something I’ve been thinking about recently are my memories of drinking. I’m 2 days off 400 days Alcohol free.

The main one though is me getting out of the bed in my youngest’s room where I’d fallen asleep and the room spinning and me feeling dizzy. I honestly thought never again pretty much every morning for the last 2 years of my drinking. There aren’t good memories there. All my drinking memories are of me drinking to excess sadly.

I look back far more fondly on my drug taking days in the 90’s

Think I just need to find a new habit/ hobby, has anyone learnt something new in their sobriety?

And even things that might appear good memories aren't tbh. Dh and I were in Portugal a few years ago and I remember sending my sister a photo of us in a lovely terrace overlooking the sea in cascais and I had a gorgeous glass of gin and tonic in front of me - was just having one and went back to the lovely hotel pretty much sober. But the reality was I spent most of that holiday envying people who were drinking more than me and wishing it was ok for me to have a bottle of wine with my dinner instead of the 2 glasses that seemed to be the normal I was faking. The truth is there was never enough for me.

My mum told me my first word was "more" (said about food - not gin and tonics) . I think my fate was sealed then :)

Morning all.

I'm up with the milk. DH woke me up and I'm mutinous.

Lots of shenanigans regarding our house sale. Why does that always happen? It's a one transaction gig. I'm bloody fuming. Three days before the exchange date the solicitors haven't got all of their clients paperwork.
I'm even too angry to be day dreaming about cottages!

With regards to drinking memories I look back fondly on the champagne years but not the day in, day out thirst for alcohol. If I was short of money it was still a priority. I'd be drinking it and it would be burning my stomach. My trainee psychologist relative called it my self harm. A bit deep for a Thursday morning!

I will not drink today
