New thread as promised. I’ll pop on later to tag everyone as I wanted to get this link on the old thread before it fills up!

I'm 45. I've been drinking a bottle/bottle and a half a night for as long as I can remember with the odd dry January/ Stoptober along the way - but I...

I had a glass of wine last night - one of the little bottles. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it made me want another one and I had my eye on the drinks cupboard. In the end I made myself an alcohol free G&T and threw in spoonful of frozen berries.

My biggest issue at present is volume of work. Yesterday a letter took me all day and I spent three hours on it on Thursday night! It was six pages though and so much checking of documents and facts. It was important to get it right but other stuff piles up and meetings get deferred. I cannot physically do any more - but will have to this weekend, just to add to the 60 hours already done.

SpringNotSprung · 25/11/2023 10:38

I should have said above I hope everyone has a terrific weekend and if not terrific that it's OK.

With love.

MamaGhina · 25/11/2023 20:00

Hi all I’m here nursing a huge mug of tea. Not much to report, just getting through each day. I have a Christmas party next weekend and I’ve put myself forward to drive. I did umm and urm about it but opted to drive. Hopefully I can stay strong.

Hope everyone else is ok. It used to be so busy on here at the weekend but more recently it’s been quiet. Not sure if that’s because people don’t need the support or it’s because they are drinking!

I tried a Pentire tonight, it was pleasant and did taste coastal! It was really quite nice.

Again, felt like drinking, but haven't. I'm just ploughing on with it really.

Overall, I know it's better not to drink than drink. Sometimes, it feels a bit boring, but I've made my choices and although life feels steady eddy it's worth carrying on and seeing the results over the coming months.

Haggisfish3 · 25/11/2023 23:14

My stop drinking date is Monday. I’m trying not to think of it as forever, but day by day.

BoilingHotand50something · 26/11/2023 07:01

@Yocal I enjoyed the Pentire too but these non alcy drinks are so blooming expensive!

@SpringNotSprung have you been tempted since? I am too scared to try!

@Haggisfish3 good luck tomorrow!

smegley · 26/11/2023 08:10

Hi everyone
I hope you're all doing ok.
I've been trying to keep busy this weekend, had a family day out yesterday and a trip to an Xmas Market planned today.
Due to staff shortages I've been given extra shifts at work.
I'm already dreading them, I am just about coping as it is :(

My appointment to see the detox nurse is on Tuesday and I've already had a row with the husband about it. He is insisting that he comes with me and I dont want him to. The shame and guilt I feel is massive and I dont really want him hearing the details. On the other hand he doesn't fully trust me not to gloss over things and tell him a part truth.
I could quite easily not go and save the arguments!

Yocal · 26/11/2023 08:16

@BoilingHotand50something I have to agree with you. Now that I've explored them the conclusion landed at is that they are okay if you're in a pub or restaurant and having a meal. They can serve a purpose.

I don't see the point on spending £3 a time on something to drink at home that has no buzz and is just extra calories. I'd rather just stick with water or tea. I can think off better ways to spend my calories and money. Credit to the marketeers though, they all are very nicely packaged. The Pentire especially.

I'm still hoping one day they will find something to replace alcohol without the negative side effects.

BoilingHotand50something · 26/11/2023 08:46

@smegley you are going to that appointment, with or without DH!

Limeandsoda2023 · 26/11/2023 09:47

Hi all, I’ve had a rubbish 10 days when I drank almost daily. I kept saying I wouldn’t drink that day and then spent all day negotiating with myself and finally finding some “reason” why it was ok to do so. So I am back on day 1 today and determined. I did 39 days in October so I know I can do this. I want a decent dry streak before Christmas. So I’ll be drinking lots of water, trying to go for just a walk around the block if I’m tempted and keep reminding myself how much better I feel when I don’t drink.
Sending good wishes to all.

Contraryjane · 26/11/2023 10:14

@Limeandsoda2023
I could have written this post. I did really well for 2 to three months, but like you, for a week have found a reason to go to the shop at 5pm. Not drinking as much as “before”, but enough to feel guilty and feeling I’ve let myself down.
Back on track is today’s plan.

BoilingHotand50something · 26/11/2023 11:06

@Contraryjane and @Limeandsoda2023 good to hear your determination. Definitely time for a good dry streak before Christmas.

SpringNotSprung · 26/11/2023 11:48

I am in a glorious, hot bubble bath. Good to catch up a bit.

@smegley if you go with your DH might not the clarity and shared knowledge move an albatross from your neck? Having said that I do understand as my DH doesn't know I have 2 or 3 ciggies a day and have done so for 5 or 7 years.

@BoilingHotand50something I disagree about the 0% alcohol. I have found a Becks Blue (or 0% Peroni) or a Clean Gin and slim (pink bottle from Waitrose) to be an absolute lifesaver. I think for me it's about the ritual - nice glass, ice, berries, sipping as I cook and then having a sit down. I'll caveat that by mention of the drinks fridge and cellar and DH's interest from a tasting and investment perspective so there is always booze in the house. On cost, I think it works out at about 50% and if it keeps you on the straight and narrow is £3 well spent.

Hoping Peppa is OK.

All day at the hospital tomorrow. Radioactive isotope then a 4 hour wait for my whole body bone scan. Taking my Christmas cards!

BoilingHotand50something · 26/11/2023 15:24

@SpringNotSprung I agree on the beers and I also had quite a decent dealcoholized wine for £6. It’s the spirits which are too expensive in my opinion. I am enjoying the fake wines and beers at the weekend as a treat. They are definitely helping me.

smegley · 26/11/2023 17:37

@BoilingHotand50something

I'm just so worried about it. I want Tuesday to be over!

BoilingHotand50something · 26/11/2023 18:38

@smegley i know you do but you are nearly there. Hang in there mate. You got this.

SpringNotSprung · 26/11/2023 19:15

All good thoughts @smegley as I used to say to the children - two more sleeps then it's here or done. It will be worth it! Good luck.

Yocal · 26/11/2023 20:03

Good luck @smegley

I can't tell you what to do about DH, but do what gets you sorted. X

Limeandsoda2023 · 26/11/2023 20:05

Good luck @smegley for Tuesday.

I’ve had a good day. Weather was rubbish but I walked this morning and kept busy this afternoon. My teen DD got home from her sport an hour ago and it felt good to make dinner and eat together and I’ve not thought too much about alcohol.

Hoping to stay strong this week. Good luck to all.

SpringNotSprung · 26/11/2023 22:09

@BoilingHotand50something I must apologise I confused a post from @yocal with one of yours.

Yocal · 27/11/2023 12:41

@SpringNotSprung I noticed that! I'm okay with you liking them. 👍 fill your boots.

SummerScoop · 27/11/2023 18:13

@smegley good luck for tomorrow.

Day 26 today. I had a dream last night that I went to the christmas market and was drinking even in my dream i was kicking myself for drinking on a sunday, I was so relieved to wake up and realise I didnt have a Monday hangover!
I hope everyones doing well

BoilingHotand50something · 27/11/2023 20:10

What a good dream @SummerScoop

My hungover Mondays (pretty much every week) are a distant memory now. Day 85 just ticked off on my app!

Haggisfish3 · 27/11/2023 21:31

I am on day 1 today and feeling pretty positive. I got rid of all booze last night and empty bottles. Got lots to do this week. I can do this. 💪🏻🤞

Haggisfish3 · 27/11/2023 21:33

And good luck @smegley for tomorrow. I would let dh come -would be good for him to hear honestly from you and be able to support you.
