Day 1

I posted another thread earlier about my disaster of a Christmas Day.

I just can't do it anymore, looking into the future I can see myself losing everything, my DH, friends, family. I was considering taking myself to a&e this morning because I was such a mess.

I'm absolutely determined to do it this time, so this is day 1.

Please join me.

So proud of everyone. I'm even proud of myself. Well done and keep going x

TheFive · 01/01/2022 10:34

Well done @moochies and everyone on day 1 or early days of quitting booze! It’s a brilliant thing to attempt. Be very proud of yourself if you managed a sober NYE 🎉

I’ve just had my second sober Christmas & NYE, and it only gets better. And you absolutely CAN do this if I did it.

Christmas 2019 I was drinking 2-3 bottles of wine most nights and couldn’t get more than a couple of days sober. I was full of anxiety and self loathing and life felt SO hard, like walking through treacle.

I cannot tell you how much better life is now. My health, mental health, weight, energy levels, relationships, career - all have benefited massively from freeing myself from the shackles of booze. Honestly, I feel like I’m having a second, better life in sobriety (and I’m mid-40s, so no spring chicken!).

I really recommend AA, too, although I would never push one way of getting sober on anyone. It worked for me, though. It’s the fellowship and regular dose of support & positive messages that helped me get (and helps me stay) sober. There are so many meetings online now, definitely worth checking out ❤️

moochies · 01/01/2022 11:04

Thank you @TheFive

And well done rocky and firefly!

How are you feeling today? DH is hungover and I'm going to make him a big fry up, I reckon he's owed it from me after all the years of the tables being turned the other way.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2022 11:42

Well done everyone! Welcome to 2022 without a hangover. Smile

Well put, @TheFive. I'm another AA member and I too have been beating the drum for peer support.

rocky1914 · 01/01/2022 12:00

Thank you @moochies xx I'm good thank you, hope you are well and just wanted to say thank you also, for starting this thread. Not sure I'd have found the courage otherwise. Thank you! X

Morning all. Some really positive posts on here. I was so looking forward to waking up this morning hangover free and it is so worth it. I normally hate new year, I find it depressing. However this year I feel really positive and can't wait for the changes sobriety brings.

Well done to everyone whether day 1 or counting in months or years.

rocky1914 · 01/01/2022 12:16

@MissConductUS Your GP can prescribe something that will ease this.

Really? I mean, honestly... I'm scared to tell my GP that I have issues with alcohol. I have a 3yo DD and don't want them to conclude that she may be in danger (which she's not because I've always made sure I'm never completely out of it, plus her DH is here as he works from home).

But yeah... not sure I'm comfortable telling my GP. Is there anything I can buy over the counter instead?

Hooray well done Rupert.

It's nice to not be vomiting for one New Year's Day. I dread to think the states I've been in previous years.

Yes, really. Diazepam is usually given. There's nothing similar over the counter, unfortunately.

In my experience, doctors are understanding and supportive when someone discusses a concern about alcohol. Their hands are tied if the patient doesn't want help. Taking away a child would be far more likely if the parent didn't see they had a problem and had actually put the child in danger. Neither of those is true in your case.

Obviously, you have to weigh the benefits of seeking care, but I don't think your at risk of being reported to social services if you do.

doorornottodoor · 01/01/2022 14:11

Well done everyone!!!! So nice to be starting the new year on a positive note. Star

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2022 14:36

Happy new year everyone! We had friends over last night. It helps that one of them doesn't drink and she brought low alcohol Prosecco which was really nice actually and we toasted in the new year. No anxiety this morning about what I said like back in the summer when they came over. Feel exhausted today but I think it's a mixture of the tension of the last few days plus my period. But I feel positive today so that's good.
Well done to ALL of you for making it through last night and I hope you all feel good today. I'm so glad I found this group Smile

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2022 14:39

@MissConductUS

It’s the brainwashing/advertising that tells us we need alcohol to enjoy ourselves.

Is advertising alcohol allowed in the UK? Here it's print only, no TV or radio ads.

It is advertised on tv in the UK. Usually with a little message at the bottom 'please enjoy responsibly'. But that's completely overtaken by good looking, slim people having an amazing time Hmm Since reading this naked mind I've realised how much people talk about alcohol as well and from a young age I've always been the one saying what did I do last night so I think it's a vicious cycle that I wake up worrying about what I did. Then do it again a few months later.
moochies · 01/01/2022 18:29

How's everyone doing tonight?

OP posts:
Rupertpenrysmistress · 01/01/2022 22:07

Good @moochies how are you? Do you have any plans for the rest of the weekend?

firefly123 · 01/01/2022 22:12

Going ok thanks @moochies. Day 2 done. So tired. Hope I can sleep as was total insomniac last night. Hope everyone else ok.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2022 22:26

You ladies are kicking it. Keep up the great work. @firefly123, it's a shame you can't buy melatonin over the counter in the UK. You'll probably get some sleep tonight but it may be fitful.

Today is my He's birthday. We're staying in and having homemade pizza, followed by chocolate mousse cake from our local posh bakery. We live large in New York. 😁🍕🎂

MissConductUS · 01/01/2022 22:27

He = DH. Darn Kindle autocorrect.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2022 22:38

Good thanks @moochies. Having a non alcoholic beer and going to bed in a minute. Seeing my mum tomorrow in a care home she is in temporarily. DB got Covid so have to take him some groceries. Good to keep busy. How is everyone else.

moochies · 01/01/2022 23:05

Well done guys. I got into bed at about 8pm with a hot chocolate and my cat 😄🤟 no plans for the next few days until the 4th when work reopens. How about everyone else?

@MissConductUS omg I could eat a pizza in bed right now! That sounds lovely.

OP posts:
moochies · 01/01/2022 23:06

In fact I'm going to suggest to DH we go for pizza tomorrow since I've got all of these lovely "spare" calories.

Lushmetender · 01/01/2022 23:44

Hi all, had a couple of days off alcohol on 27th and 29th. Really overdid it yesterday and so been feeling hangzious. Hope I can sleep tonight. Starting with dry jan and see how I go from there. It’s been a really tough year! Not quite sure what to do with myself!

rocky1914 · 02/01/2022 00:27

...and here comes the insomnia 😒😒😒

Wish me luck guys. This is gonna be brutal 😔🤦‍♀️

MissConductUS · 02/01/2022 00:37

Welcome, @Lushmetender. You've come to the right place.

Haggisfish3 · 02/01/2022 09:37

firefly123 · 02/01/2022 10:33
