This is the latest in an established series of supportive and friendly threads, for anyone committing to a life without booze. If you have tried and failed to be a sensible, occasional or moderate drinker, and have come to the conclusion that you just can’t do it, you are in good company.

I won’t lie, the first part is tough. And it’s tougher for some than others. You will need to learn new ways of managing stress and negotiating social occasions. You will have to learn that alcohol and fun are not the same thing. Your relationships will change, often for the better, but some hard-drinking friends will turn away from the mirror your sobriety holds up to their own habits. You will find that the feelings you tried to drown in booze, come bubbling up to the surface and there’s no option but to face them. You will feel physically and emotionally low, as you relive and regret the stupid, painful and selfish things you did while drinking.

Here’s the good news: the first part will soon be over. It will be more worth it than you can possibly imagine. Life will still be messy, difficult and poignant, but so much sweeter, sharper, and more real.

This thread is a great place to ask for advice and tips, whinge and moan, check in for daily accountability, and run to when you have a craving that scares you. We also have quality chat about running, books, gardening, pets, and occasional meaningful conversations about our lives. Grin

As should be obvious from the above, the thread is a DRY ZONE. Discussion of current drinking is extremely unhelpful to anyone in the early days, and people who have been alcohol-free for a long time benefit from a safe, dry space to talk. If you are looking to stop imminently and need to ask questions, go ahead, but leave your glass at the door. You wouldn’t take a drink to an AA meeting, so don’t do it here. You are welcome to post regularly from Day 1 onwards. If you suspect you have a physical dependency and need to cut down, seek medical help. If you want to be alcohol free except for a glass at Christmas and on your birthday, that’s moderation and you can talk about it on a moderation thread.

This is a rather long OP already so might I suggest that people use their first post to recommend their favourite quit-lit or other sources of help and support? Don't forget to say hello and a little bit abut your journey (if you want to). Many thanks.

@Nosilayak are you sure that’s the letters and it wasn’t ALT?

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 11:23

@Adm1010 How stupid am I? I was in such a state when they rang and said very high results I've got the letters mixed up. It's ALT, sorry about that!

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 11:33

ALT is an enzyme produced mainly in the liver . If the liver is not working properly it will release ALT into the bloodstream . So a high blood level of ALT is a good indicator of liver damage

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 11:41

@Adm1010 thanks so much for the explanation. Do you happen to know what numbers are classed as high and what is the normal range? Any info on this gratefully received. My mind just went blank when the nurse rang. I've looked online but can't make head nor tail of it all and you explain things so well. Thanks.

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 11:47

Mm I think ( but I’m not 100 percent off top of my head ) it’s below around 30 to be considered normal . What’s yours can you remember ? I could be wrong on this and it’s variable for things like fatty liver not related to alcohol if I recall

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 11:59

@Adm1010 I'm sure she said mine was 35 but I can't remember. She said it was high and mentioned a fatty liver. When I've looked online it mentions figures in the 100's for some people with liver damage so I can't understand why mine would be problematic at 35? I'll have to ask the nurse to go through all the results again when I next have an appointment, which are like gold dust!

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 12:21

Mm then I’d prob call that slightly elevated if anything .Your fibro scan will give a clearer picture . They will stage your fibro scan stage 1 to 4 if it shows damage and that will be a clear indicator where you are

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 12:46

@Adm1010 that's such a relief that you said "slightly elevated", I'm praying my liver is still repairable. This makes me absolutely determined not to drink alcohol ever again. If anyone on this thread has doubts about staying AF then please, please think of your health. No big drinking session I have ever had has been worth the worry I am currently going through. I wish I could have been one of those people who are happy with a just a couple of small glasses of wine with a meal. But, because I have no self control where alcohol is concerned, I am now faced with total abstinence from it which is extremely hard to do when it has been such a big part of my life.

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 12:51

When’s your scan?

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 13:23

Friday 15th October. I'm dreading it.

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 13:26

Just had the appointment through in the post. I can't believe the coincidence! Normally, Id have a drink tonight to calm me down about it, but not this time.

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 13:48

Just read through and it's not the fibroscan it's ultrasound for US Abdomen and Pelvis, whatever that means, will liver show up on that? I think I'll end up paying privately for the fibroscan, although I was told by the nurse that they can do it at Royal Preston Hospital which I'm assuming is NHS. I'm also waiting for an endoscopy date - all good fun!

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 14:57

The liver will show on a general abdo scan and it will give a general idea if there is liver damage . However the fibro scan is more targeted and detects early damage and is able to STAGE damage to give a better idea of where people are at and what plans / outcomes are realistic .

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 17:12

@Adm1010 thank you so much for answering my queries. I feel much happier now, I tend to blank things out when the nurse or doctor are talking to me as I'm panicking so much inside, then I put the phone down and can't remember what they have said. Thanks again for taking the time to reply x

ChampooPapi · 30/09/2021 18:14

Checking in 🙌

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 19:08

@Nosilayak no worries

@ChampooPapi evening! Smile

Hope everyone else is having a settled evening . I’m waiting for my lot to come home from watching James Bond.

My new juicer arrived today … can’t decide yet if I love it or it’s a big faff ! I’ve made everyone juice for when they get in Grin

Breathmiller · 30/09/2021 19:11

Ooh..I love my juicer. Apple and ginger shots in the morning are better than a coffee hit

Adm1010 · 30/09/2021 19:16

It could go either way right now!! How are you doing the apple and ginger ?? I’m a juicing novice Grin

Breathmiller · 30/09/2021 19:24

It's so simple. Just chuck in an apple and a huge chunk of fresh ginger. You don't need to peel or core the apple. Just take off the stalk. And you can keep the skin on the ginger too. About a thumb width of ginger. I like it fiery so put in a lot.

I like a lot of the Jason Vale juices. A lot of them do require a blender too. So, 'thinnies' are just done in the juicer and 'thickies' are juiced then blended, usually with an avocado and/or banana.

When you have a juicer as opposed to just a blender you can do more veg. Parsnip, kale, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli. All can be juiced. And really nice.

Breathmiller · 30/09/2021 19:50

I'm trying to rewire my brain after looking at a few things online today. One was to tag something helpful on to an activity you would normally do that gives you a dopamine hit.

So, for instance on the evenings I'm not working I tend to relax on the sofa mumsnetting. But, it's not the lying on the sofa thats the big thing. I find it relaxing to scroll mindlessly on here. So, i have come upstairs to the exercise bike and I am mindlessly mumsnetting while cycling.

Thanks admn101 for that info about the reward centre. It made me have a rethink.

Same as the habit with the wine glass. I love drinking out my nice wine glasses. I just so happen to have changed what's in it. So, I have sparkling water in these glasses now with my dinner. I still get the joy of using these stemmed glasses but I am actively drinking something healthy rather than something that is not good for me.

For anyone who's new to this thread, we had a great conversation a few threads ago about #reclaimingthewineglass. It's worth a read actually. A read while you're on the exercise bike of course 😅

HeadlessLegless · 30/09/2021 21:03

Hello Everyone, in particular @Nosilayak and @Adm1010. I have been following this thread for ages. Ages and ages to be honest. I originally started on the "dry" thread in 2011 and buckled out after a while. Hey ho.

Anyway, due to me lurking and the talk about the fibroscan, I have booked myself one privately for next Tuesday 5th October.

If it is alright with you two, I would like to post my results and would love to be kept in touch with yours.

I am someone who has abused alcohol for the past 20 years easily. I will post more about my story after my scan.

Well done to all on this thread. You have already given me lots of courage to try and give up and loads and loads of "quit lit" books that I have been encouraged to buy. Thank you all.

AlloftheTime · 30/09/2021 21:07

Checking in on day 66 - realise that I’ve done two complete calendar months, not sure why but that seems more impressive than the day count.
I’m sure that finding you all and joining in here has played a huge part in me keeping this up. I know it’s me that hasn’t reached for a drink and kept busy and distracted and all that but feeling accountable to people here was a big motivator.
Hope you are all doing okay - keep it up and thank you all for sharing.

SoberSept21 · 30/09/2021 21:35

Checking in. Good evening everyone.
I hadn't even considered getting a scan. I guess it's a case of not knowing allows me to think that all is okay. So thanks to those talking about them, I might take the plunge, at least I'd know what I was dealing with.
I worry what I'd do if it was 'all good', I'm still in the place where I might think it's all okay then, no harm done so back on it Hmm

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 22:23

@Headlesslegless Hi, so pleased you have been reading the posts and it's prompted you to book a scan. That's a very brave move and I'll be thinking about you next week and hoping you get good results. I'm more than happy to share my results when I get them and if it can help someone else in any way, then all the better. I look forward to hearing about your "story" when you feel ready to tell us more x

Nosilayak · 30/09/2021 22:37

@SoberSept21 I'm glad it was OK to put stuff about scans on here today and you appreciated it (if that's the right word). I did wonder if I'd gone on about my health, scans, blood tests etc a bit too much! I'm a terrible worrier and I thought people might have got sick of me going on today. I'd even decided to leave the group but it's been a source of invaluable support to me, I can say stuff on here that I can't say to anyone in "real life" and I'd definitely miss everyone. The scan I'm having is an ultrasound initially, then the nurse mentioned the fibroscan could follow if necessary. I'd never even heard of one before but the more I've read about it on here the more it makes sense. I am now considering booking one privately as I believe there could be a long wait on the NHS. I suppose it depends on the results of the Ultrasound. Anyway, it's all keeping me off the booze which can only be good for me.
