Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

My resolve is definitely wavering today. Thankfully DH still seems strong and if he isn't drinking then neither am i.

Dugee · 04/01/2021 17:44

Boris addressing the nation at 8 tonight, really feel like I need a drink for that

I've managed dry January every year since 2013. I wonder if Boris will break me.

I might stay off social media/away from the news until 10, when the shop shuts.

Lushmetender · 04/01/2021 17:45

Shaky start for me. 1st dry, 2nd not (as residual bottle of brut left. Too tempting. Dry 3rd but biggest test is full lockdown here in Scotland. We were enjoying a fairly normal period of normality being in level 1 for sometime before Boxing Day. Now kids off until at least 1 feb 2021. Both my husband and I work from home so motivating kids is difficult. I’m in the pharmaceutical industry so work is busy with trials for treatments for covid so v busy! My friend has just sent a message removing her dry January app 🤣. However will stick to it but needing motivation! Keep going everyone!

I had really bad insomnia last night, and I had a massive pasty for lunch today which has gone straight to my hips....but DH saved the day when he went out for milk and came back with milk and not wine. Its easier for me when he's on board...I don't think my willpower would have held if he was sat next to me glugging a full bodied red.

Don’t let Boris fuck this up for you as well!

CoronaIsWatching · 04/01/2021 18:03

end of day 4 for me. I had a wave of nausea this morning when getting ready for work which is unusual otherwise all fine. I frequently go 4 or 5 days without booze so th real struggle will probably be from Thursday/friday onwards x

mrsnibblesisahero · 04/01/2021 18:12

I totally agree @CandyLeBonBon - this thread is helping me so much! Can't believe am standing in my kitchen cooking and not drinking! Quite enjoying like and ginger cordial with sparkling water. And bitter lemon! I think I need non sweet soft drinks.

Agree, tonight's developments are a potential trigger.... stay strong!!

OhioOhioOhio · 04/01/2021 18:14

Yes, I like this thread too. Thank you everyone. Reckon I look worse off the booze though.

Dugee · 04/01/2021 18:16

@mrsnibblesisahero

Something about ginger really hits the spot for me too. M&S do a really good rhubarb and ginger cordial. If you fancy something warm then clipper lemon and ginger tea (has a better ginger hit than other brands IMO).

Dugee · 04/01/2021 18:23

Reckon I look worse off the booze though.

Give it 10 days and people will be saying things like, "oh you look different, have you lost weight/been on holiday (well, maybe not that one at the moment)/started using new make up?". You may even notice it yourself but other people noticed it first for me. It's the subtle less bloaty face, less bags and a glow that comes from not being dehydrated. This is once you get through the first week of weird sleep a, feeling thirsty and craving sugar of course Grin

SantaMonicaPier · 04/01/2021 18:23

These four days have gone surprisingly easy. I think Fri and Sat will be a challenge so I'm ordering in various alcohol free drinks to try

theDudesmummy · 04/01/2021 18:31

Ginger kombucha is amazing!

I'm just back from the supermarket and didn't buy any wine. BUT I've transferred my alcohol dependence to sugar and can't stop eating. I'm going to give myself a week to adjust to being AF then I'll start looking at cutting down on sugar. But one thing at a time.

Haggisfish · 04/01/2021 18:40

It’s really common to crave sugar so my dependency worker told me. I’m going with it for now.

pinktransit · 04/01/2021 18:44

Jumping in as starting today, so a bit behind the rest of you. I was trying for 3 alcohol free days a week earlier in the year but that went out of the window. Went back to it in December, but then Christmas happened. So I have coke, tonic, af beer for when I fancy a cold drink. Tonight is nice tea to drink. And maybe a bath and early night after Boris' announcement.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/01/2021 18:44

I'm temporarily working in a supermarket at the moment after my regular worked tanked so I could get wine at any time. BUT I DIDNT!!

OhioOhioOhio · 04/01/2021 18:56

Dugee
10 days. Okay. Thank you. I'll keep going. I was just surprised at how awful I looked. I wonder if being entirely 'clean' made me pay more attention?

supercee · 04/01/2021 19:13

I thought Nicola's announcement would sway me but nope, it's making me think I'm going to embrace it and focus on the things I keep putting off - reading and listening to books, cracking on with my CBT, focussing on losing the pounds... I will emerge from this lockdown victorious Grin

That being said has anyone found any nice sugar free drinks?

supercee · 04/01/2021 19:13

Kombucha is great too btw.

dementedma · 04/01/2021 19:15

Day 4 done, despite it being dad's funeral today. Drinking wont change anything I suppose.

Darker · 04/01/2021 19:20

Sorry for your loss, demendedma Flowers. I hope it went as well as it could in the circumstances.

Dogswotsits · 04/01/2021 19:41

Has anybody tried the dry dragon kombucha? Don’t fancy ordering 6 if not nice! Or can recommend any kombucha.....

mrsnibblesisahero · 04/01/2021 19:55

Thanks @Dugee, I meant lime and ginger obviously.... thanks for that tip, shall try that. I have no idea what kombucha is!!

mrsnibblesisahero · 04/01/2021 19:57

Oh gosh @dementedma, am so sorry for your loss, that's so awful for you. I couldn't stand up or even sit down without a drink in my hand after my DM's funeral and for some time after. And it didn't help one bit, so you are making a good decision. Very difficult for you.
