I drink a bottle of wine every day and can't seem to stop

The days that I try not to do it im left feeling very lost and depressed.

It is making me fat, lethargic and rubbish

Tips please of how to get this dreadful habit in check - Id like to still enjoy wine but at a less destructive/more sociable level

I don't drink anything other than wine really- if I have a lager or something I don't feel compelled to drink more but one glass of wine and before I know it ive finished the bottle

Help!

Hope all having a good week and feeling strong willed. Tomorrow is DH 40th and I already feel like a drink tonight as we've got a couple of days off work and various nice things planned over the next few days so feel on 'holiday' mode. Trying to resist though, despite kids winding me up.

Thanks, I measured a single vodka and Diet Coke with loads of ice. On the fruit tea now, a failure really but it was enough.

I am motivated by the better sleep I'm getting. I wear a Jawbone Up which monitors sleep patterns and it's noticeable that I'm getting more unbroken and deeper sleep.

I did a quick google and some people do report itching as part of with drawl symptoms. :(

I had intense dreams last night, but to be honest I've always had intense dreams, sober or drunk.

1 week Caramel that's great, well done. Itching a weird one, is it all over?

Im on my 6th day now, sleeping better but not as great as I think it should be - I thought I'd be bouncing out of bed every morning!

Hello Smile

I was on one of the dry threads a year or two ago and was doing really well. However, this Christmas has knocked me backwards and I'm really annoyed with myself.

It has rained here almost solidly for 2+ months, so I've been putting effort into 'cosy' nights in... this always includes alcohol (for me- I'm the only drinker in the house).

Anyway, I've just read through the thread and you seem like a lovely bunch- may I join in?

I've downloaded the drink aware app mentioned upthread and committed myself to 6 dry days this week. We have an exchange student arriving on Friday, so I think it might be an easy week to start.

I'm also going to take a face, and underwear selfie each week.

Good luck to all.

Hi Caramel Smile

I make sure I have 2 nights a week off- but once a bottle is open, I drink it all.

I have a milestone birthday this year and I really want to progress beyond that age as a fit and healthy woman.

I have had this drinking pattern for many years, and whilst I feel relatively fit at the moment, I have no idea what is happening inside me.

I would also like to lose a stone.

Ooh... I'll look into that.

I did actually have 2 large glasses of red last night (I'd chosen it as a no drink night), but I haven't today. I didn't enjoy it as much as usual because it had the slightly bitter tang of failure.

I would like to get to where you are, Caramel!

I typed and posted a reply earlier, Caramel, but it's vanished! I admire your restraint- I'd find it difficult not to carry on in the evening if I'd had a few glasses over lunch.

I've not had alcohol since Friday, and only once last week other than that. I'm feeling very pleased with myself.

Next week will test me a bit, as I'm away with 6 drinkers- in party mode. There will be BBQs in the snow, much jollity and lots of available Prosecco and nice wine.

I'm not going to say that I won't have any because then I'd be annoyed with myself if I slip up. I intend to go and join in, without going daft. Tbh, I didn't really overdo it on the same holiday last year, so I'm not overly worried.

I'll take the underwear selfie again tomorrow, then again in another fortnight. Are you doing that too?

Having been near-teetotal through my 20s, I have drunk far too much in the past 10 years. Motherhood certainly taught me to love wine.

Very recently red wine started disagreeing with me, a development from which I have profited enormously. Without as much effort as I would have previously guessed, I've managed to ease off of the wine and started with the more occasional vodka/soda.

I find that reading a book is so much more conducive to teetotaling than television. Keeps your hands busy.

Tea really helps me, it feels like an 'event' in the same way that a drink does (not as satisfying, but still).

Whatever time you normally would have your first glass of wine, push it out by whatever increment you can manage. Break up your routine so that it's easier - for me, cooking is a major trigger so I will gladly call for take-away if I'm wedded to an evening of abstinence.

Good luck.

I agree about reading being better (in so many ways!) than watching TV.

I don't like ordinary tea, but I have discovered a caffeine free tea, without milk which seems to hit the spot.

I'm actually slightly Blush about the weight loss, now I think about it, because it highlights just how much I was drinking. My eating habits have changed slightly, in that I'm craving a lot of carbs to replace the carbs in the wine. I'm just eating them for now, and plan to cut down a bit when I'm in a stronger place.

Having said that, I haven't wanted to drink this week. Hosting the exchange student has helped enormously because I want to remain hospitable.

I'd like to lose another half stone. I enjoy cycling and swimming and continued to do both up until Christmas, when rain, depression and wine took over. The one thing I stuck with was aqua aerobics, which I love. I'm not as toned as I'd like, but it has stopped me from going to seed completely!

Your busy week should help you to stick with your success, shouldn't it? A change of routine is a good thing.
