I'll start. I work in research. Lone parent. Rent. Minimal savings (think under 1k). I'm an 'emergent service worker' - never heard of this before!

Why are different occupations such as solicitor or cleaner on there if they're not supposed to be class markers? Same for activities such as visiting stately homes vs watching sport. The point is it didn't matter what I said - I had money so it decided I was elite regardless of the rest.

That's right. Only money changed the outcome of the quiz and the other answers made no difference. Not very realistic really.

Iamclearlyamug · 11/11/2022 14:10

Technical middle class 😅😅 who thinks up all this rubbish

What a load of tosh - apparently I'm Technical Middle Class:

People in this group tend to mix socially with people similar to themselves Don't we all?
They prefer emerging culture, such as using social media, to highbrow culture such as listening to classical music NOPE - I prefer rock or indie music
Many people in this group work in research, science and technical occupations NOPE - I'm an office administrator
They tend to live in suburban locations, often in the south east of England NOPE - tiny terraced in inner city West Midlands
They come from largely middle class backgrounds NOPE - definitely not!

Me too, and all of this! ANd I don't socialise with people like myself at all. My friends are a very weird mixture of people.

Mylakk · 11/11/2022 14:11

Elite
Enjoy high cultural activities such as visiting museums and listening to classical music
Went to private school and elite universities
Socialise with people who do a wide variety of jobs

Definitely don't feel elite!

It might be an indicator but it's not exactly accurate either.

If I become bankrupt and need to rent somewhere, or even to temporarily claim benefits, I don't suddenly become working class.

Exactly. All I need to change class, app are, if for MIL to die! (only chance we'd get get onto the property ladder, I'd rather have MIL!)

Upsidedownagain · 11/11/2022 14:13

Elite which seems ridiculous, but certainly didn't go to private school and am against them on principle. Had help from parents to get into the housing market and have been able to move up the housing ladder with my DH so live in a nice area in a house worth considerably more than £500,000. Most family and friends do have professional type jobs as they are mostly university educated. But I see myself as relatively fortunate rather than "elite".

xogossipgirlxo · 11/11/2022 14:14

Emergent service workers
This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:
Are young
Enjoy a cultured social life
Rent their home - almost 90%

Sounds about right.

Croque · 11/11/2022 14:14

Elite 😆

Thingamebobwotsit · 11/11/2022 14:14

Had to laugh am established middle class...

But may have made it into the elite group until I pointed out I have a lorry driver as a friend. Does it make any difference that he earns more than me?

What a load of twaddle 🤣🤣

Season0fTheWitch · 11/11/2022 14:15

Apparently I'm Elite... not sure about that one

SnoopLabbyLab · 11/11/2022 14:17

Elite here. Which I suppose isn’t wrong in the wider picture, but I feel our life is very nice, but pretty normal.

SnoopLabbyLab · 11/11/2022 14:19

I got into Elite but said I knew a farm worker. I guess they are assuming a Lady C/ Mellors scenario 😆

catfunk · 11/11/2022 14:19

Established middle class which I think is bollocks. From a very working class area although i do have a slightly different lifestyle now

Mommabear20 · 11/11/2022 14:20

Precariat 😂
The poorest class!

We're not well off by any means, but we're more fortunate than most!

EndlessMagpies · 11/11/2022 14:21

It thinks I'm established middle class. No idea why. Perhaps the survey isn't cut out for people 60+ who've paid their mortgage off, know people socially from literally all walks of life, and whose family work in the performing arts so I'm in the theatre or watching dance quite a lot.

MuddlingThrough1724 · 11/11/2022 14:23

Elite here too, which is nonsense! We go to the theatre and watch some ballet as my daughter likes it, have a huge mortgage on a 500k+ house and have some savings, but they are all to maintain the house we can't really afford! Hate to think what that survey would make of someone actually "elite"!!

OrangePomander · 11/11/2022 14:24

Established middle class, apparently. But if I change just the answers about who I know socially it changes to technical middle class!

PinkSyCo · 11/11/2022 14:25

Precariat. Not even working class!!!
Ah well at least I learned a new word today I guess.

sqirrelfriends · 11/11/2022 14:25

Elite apparently. What a load of rubbish.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2022 14:26

Established middle class.Grin

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2022 14:26

Elite!

First and last time I expect to be told that. I’d have said established middle class.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2022 14:27

TBF that sounds about right

what group did you think you’d be in?

shabs05 · 11/11/2022 14:27

Technical middle class but we are working class. The ranges in those answers were too wideso not particularly accurate.

palygold · 11/11/2022 14:27

Load of rubbish, essentially!

popandchoc · 11/11/2022 14:28

Technical middle class.
