How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

OP posts:
Duckin · Today 10:48

I was horrified when I saw a clip of J Ross making a joke about comedian Mo Gilligan’s teeth on the big narstie show. At the time Mo hadn’t had his teeth ‘done’ cosmetically - they were very nice, natural, and really clean and bright but slightly small for Mo’s face. JR cruelly pointed out Mo’s teeth laughing hysterically at them, as though he himself is some attractive specimen… It looked like punching down, it was unkind and not clever in the slightest. It looked like jealousy. Mo was very gracious and impressive in response, but it clearly got to him. JR showed he was a bully boy and not particularly clever. It’s always stuck with me and was a real lesson in recognising pathetic bullying when you see it. I hope mo’s career continues to grow and I hope JR is seen less and less of as he’s so awful.

queenceleste · Today 10:51

I think the media was a bit dazzled by Brand and had evidently terrible judgment about him. Important people often stand next to success in the hope of shoring up their own career footing.

Also a lot of people might have been nervous of looking puritanical or po faced when a kind of liberal sexuality was being expressed. Many people clearly did not know how to read him. People other than Bob Geldof and Shappi Khorsandi and all the others who had their wits about them and all his victims of course.

38thparallel · Today 10:53

@Cusstardy
It’s obviously not comparable to rape but actually many people thought at the time it was appalling. I have never watched either of them since the incident. Gross misogyny and cruelty.

I agree.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 10:54

I’ve always thought Jonathan Ross is a massive bellend.

BrandiedAromatics · Today 10:56

Brand was called out by many other celebrities - at different times. Rod Stewart called him out when RB, from the stage, did another of his humiliating turns about Kimberley.

leli · Today 11:08

Both RB and JR are/were obvious misogynistic bullies. I loathe them both.

From my POV the main victim of the inane prank calls was not Andrew Sachs, humiliating and utterly stupid though the calls were, it was the woman whose privacy and dignity was violated.

No public apology from revolting JR that I have seen yet.

I used to work with him. A more oily, brown-nosing waste of space you could not meet.

Still Russell Brand has now been branded. Glad he's going to prison.

BendoftheBeginning · Today 11:09

Put the self-satisfied tribal thinking away, and start looking critically at EVERYONE.

Oh okay. I really needed to know that 😀. I’ll start with the culture around Blair’s times and neoliberalism though, thanks, because that was a turning point in socioeconomics and culture that we have never recovered from.

Womens rights do fluctuate. It is very frustrating that it is always women’s rights that fluctuate, since Roman times, and I think it is closely related with imperial thinking and ‘might is right’ attitudes. More women need to be on guard against this.

Well I suppose it’s a refreshing change from blaming the 60s and the advent of the contraceptive pill for everything. Though heaven knows my small-c conservative in-laws did, and were hardly alone in that.

@charliehungerford I am dubious about any 26 year old who pursues a relationship with a 16 year old. I don’t have to think it is grooming to think that it is really off.

Ten years is nothing really, as I said she was a very mature 17. My father was 15 years older than my mother when she met him at the age of 24. I don’t see an issue unless the younger party is particularly vulnerable or the older is in a position of power. This wasn’t the case with JG and JR.

PoliteGreyDreamer · Today 11:27

He genuinely apologised very quickly at the time, and he wasn't broadcasting private details of HIS sexual partner's sexual history to the nation. He was terrible but Russel Brand was worse, and this was noted at the time.

I am still angry for Georgina Bailey's that her privacy was invaded at a time that various wealthy men (Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan etc) were being allowed to silence the press for highlighting their behaviour with prostitutes etc, while a gross invasion of her privacy was dressed up as disrespect towards her grandfather ffs.

Jonathan Ross would do well to confront this episode again tbh.

charliehungerford · Today 11:30

napody · Today 10:40

Would you still be OK with a 26 year old dating a 16 year old now, out of interest?

Agree with @SheilaFentiman , it's not really relevant what her personality or behaviour was like. It's HIS behaviour that's off.

Very much depends on the individuals concerned. I don’t think you can say it’s wrong without knowing the couple. In some instances it could be questionable, as I said in a previous post if the younger party is vulnerable or the older party was in a position of power or influence then yes, I would question it. It’s not a black and white issue.

billysboy · Today 11:34

a family we did a big refurb for had a daughter who was 15 at the time and had been dating 27 year old , just didnt sit right , they are still together and married with kids but we did and still do look at him as a pedo

Kstrang · Today 11:36

Must be horrible for Jane Goldman. Very very humiliating.

BillieWiper · Today 11:37

It felt like the media portrayed 'Sachsgate' in quite a duplicitous way. Like pretending they thought it was absolutely terrible but almost sort of making fun of the outcome of it.

I got the impression someone angles were almost taking the piss out of Sachs for being so upset about it. Doing interviews with the woman, then stories about how Sachs disowned her etc.

It was all kind of sleazy and the media almost relished in it rather than genuinely seriously thinking it ruined Brand or Ross's careers.

Poor Sachs didn't want any of the publicity. It was all extremely embarrassing for him.

Stop making excuses for a 26 year old man having a relationship with someone who’s barely out of school!
As others have pointed out it’s nothing to do with what you deem her “maturity”, that’s exactly the excuse made by abusive men who’ve had relationships with teenagers.

Also you say she came from a “liberal” family, what do you mean by that?! Do you mean she was allowed to make her own choices as a teenager- drugs, alcohol and sex? We’ve all seen those “cool” parents who give their young teens very wide boundaries. It rarely ends well for the child.

FancyKeyboard · Today 11:45

Terrible behaviour. In Ross' defence I'm sure I've read he's been very supportive to up-and-coming acts, that he's helped build careers. And he supported Linehan for whatever that's worth.

I think he was happy to join in with whatever gross sexism was happening at the time, but is not on the same level of Brand the actual rapist.

“At least he’s not a rapist” sets a very low bar.

JR made, encouraged and laughed along with many vile misogynistic comments on TV and radio. They are there for us all to see.

He should bloody well come out, admit he was a disgusting misogynist, apologise and hope the British public forgive him.

Other men also need to apologies including Chis Evans, who must be absolutely shitting himself at the moment.

Jonathan Ross was more powerful and influential in the media world than Jane Goldman when they were dating - he had his own chat show around that time - The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross (1987–1988)

It’s not solely about the 10 year age difference either. When your mother met your father, she was a full adult at 24.

If you knew Jane at 17, she had already been dating a considerably older man for months or possibly over a year. That would tend to make
a teenager come across as mature.

In spite of the fact that the woman you think he abused, Billi Piper, is still a great friend and talks very positively about her time with him?

Imdunfer · Today 12:17

It's quite extraordinary how many women on this forum are prepared to tell other grown women how they should feel about their husbands and previous partners!

tokennamechange · Today 12:33

Eh?

How on earth could she be the 'mum of a fellow student' when she had her son at 21, so her H to be would have been 13 at the time and would have finished school by the time JL's son would even be starting school???

PP has explained that what the previous poster said wasn't right anyway, but this isn't impossible (albeit rare)- a fair amount of schools (particularly independents) are 3-18 - they could have overlapped by as much as 2-3 school years (son started nursery aged 3, partner was in Y11 at the time, up to Y1 and last year of 6th form.

My mother was a very young 24, very naive and my father was a 38 year naval officer who swept her off her feet. They had a long and relatively happy marriage. JR has always been quite immature, JG was the opposite. I think the fact that they got married, he didn’t simply take advantage of her, and they are still married over 35 years later would indicate his intentions were not bad. Age gap relationships can be exploitative but I don’t think this one was.

Puppylucky · Today 12:35

AInightingale · Today 08:17

A lot of people at the time didn't take the incident seriously. I think this may have been because the Daily Mail pushed the story hard and encouraged people to complain to the BBC. It was dismissed in some quarters as a manufactured outrage being driven by sanctimonious people on the right. I don't really understand why, because it was a gross, shockingly cruel thing to do. (A bit like Brand and his pet dog, there is a definite vein of psychopathy there.)

JR's two daughters strike me as being very troubled and messed-up young women, and I wonder if it's got something to do with having such a foul-mouthed pig of a father who moved in such dodgy circles. Surely you would like your father to be a decent, kind man that you could look up to.

That's a really nasty thing to say. You can criticise Ross as a man and professionally but criticising his parenting is beyond. His daughters absolutely adore him for the record as you can see from their social media.

@Thundertoast
Joanna Lumley is eight years older than her husband. She met him as a school boy. He was at her son's school. Later she bumped into him again and they married. They are clearly very happy and I like Joanna. Do you damn Joanna for marrying someone she met when he was just a school boy and she was the Mum of a fellow student?

I didnt know this! Thanks for letting me know, il go off and read about it as thats creepy!

Bit different to a 26 year old dating a 16 year old though, isnt it? Have you brought this into the conversation to defend Ross's actions, what was your intention here as im not clear?

Puppylucky · Today 12:45

Thundertoast · Today 09:22

I would be interested in your thoughts on him getting together with his wife when she was 16 and he was 26?
Im not being antagonistic btw, just genuinely curious. That is predator behaviour to me.

He and she have both spoken about it. He was a nerdy researcher with thick glasses when they met and she was already a published writer. He was in no position to groom her. In fact both of them have described the dynamic of her being the more emotionally mature. During their married life he has done nothing but support her professionally so I think their relationship was more even handed than you might be assuming .

It’s not true regarding Joanna Lumley so you don’t need to find it creepy.
