Random things that you realise, realtively late in life, you just dont like?

Fairly recently, Ive realised I dont like these things:

Live albums/song recordings. No matter how much I love the band or song.
Watching dance…especially in a musical
Songs named after women…even I can’t explain that one!
Meals where every mouthful is the same…e.g. pizza

I wouldnt have said these things a year ago I dont think , so it proves TIPU am still getting to know myself in my late 50’s!

Anyone else had a similar epiphany?

I hate watching dance too!

Overt messaging in drama’s / films other media. I am pretty Left wing but it seems a lot of drama try to turn themselves into a ‘teaching moment’ about racism, feminism, trans rights etc. etc. such as the female character will fight off 3 large 6 foot guys, the white guy will turn out to be the villain etc.

I’m with you on this one pp. if I start watching something and it’s trying to ‘educate’ me to be nice/ kind then I’m out of there. I have noticed nearly all the pre school books that my grand children have this saccharine quality. Whatever happened to Big bad wolves and scary trolls? 😅

Live albums/song recordings. No matter how much I love the band or song. Agree with this one. I want to hear a brilliantly recorded and produced song as it was meant to be recorded and produced!
Somewhat related: gigs. I don't mind hearing the live versions of songs on principle, but often in reality they are disappointing due to bad sound/someone in the band/the singer having an off-day. (exceptions are Prince RIP, Dolly Parton RIP and Grace Jones, who were all epic live).
TV comedy. I think it had a great phase with Spaced, Black Books, The Office etc, but current/recent things like Motherland and Detectorists I just don't get.
Pubs. Too loud, often don't have anything interesting to drink if you don't drink alcohol like me (the local where my friends like to meet up doesn't even do a mug of tea). They're also not that comfortable and are often either freezing, or the ones with a real fire stultifyingly hot. I just don't get why I should want to sit on a hard chair (that's always the wrong height for the table somehow) for hours drinking soda water or fizzy shite while alternately shouting and trying to hear what people are saying.

Voiceovers at the start of each episode of a TV series. Call the Midwife did this, and so does Heroes on Amazon. Utterly tedious quasi-philosophical drivel, even if it was Vanessa Redgrave.

Even worse are voiceovers at the end of programme, particularly those with a very dramatic ending; they bring you back down to earth with a jolt.

Getting drunk! Maybe because of the hangovers I started to get, but getting drunk is awful.
I can't believe I used to dedicate so much of my life to it. I now realise:

  • it causes weight gain
-bloats and ages my face -dehydrates me -gives me headaches -makes me talk absolute shite -contributes to my lifelong anxiety

Men.
People in general.
Visiting relatives.
People who think they are automatically entitled to my time and energy.
After reading this, it basically summed up what couple of PPs said - people. 😂

People who contact me on Facebook messenger instead of WhatsApp. It's not 2009. You have my number.

Oh yes this! If I get a message on fb messenger I’ll probably ignore it for a few weeks as I’m just cross about it.

London- used to love it. It always was exhausting and grubby, but I seem to have started minding.
Chocolate.
The Green Party.

Greys Anatomy is bad for this, it started in Covid season. The topics are really good, vital and interesting but the sledgehammer messaging is hard to watch now. Sadly, the message probably never hits the intended target and the rest of us who were already on board are lectured to.

Outdoor events at night. I don't mind a BBQ in the summer at someone's house or whatever, but a couple of years ago I had to accept that all those things people get excited about - A christmas fair (evening), fireworks, glynbourne.... just not me. I can't seem to cope wiht the dark, outside, and noise all at once.

I will counter this with, WhatsApp not being so easily available on the iPad. That’s why I’ll use messenger sometimes.

@Luckyingame 'People' are scoring quite highly on this thread, aren't they?!

I can’t stand him. His programmes are so boring.

We are a club of 3.

I mean, national treasure and all that, but I really dislike the content.

Reading. I used to love it. I just can’t be arsed any more. Give me an audio book or podcast, it’s far more relaxing.

simpsonthecat · Today 13:56

BBC adverts. Just stop it. I know you want to advertise forthcoming programmes but if I wanted advert breaks I would watch ITV

ItsAQuandryAlright · Today 13:56

Going out for a fancy afternoon tea with friends. I used to go, and fool myself that I enjoyed it, but I had to admit to myself eventually that they're usually a big disappointment, so I no longer go.

Haha yes that’s why I get fb messages sometimes - still annoys me! Also I’ve got WhatsApp on my iPad - is it an issue with other tablets maybe?

A topical one but fireworks displays (at this time of year, don't mind summer ones). Went to one for years because "tradition". Stopped a couple of years ago as kids older and not so bothered and then the final straw was paying £50 in tickets for the big one at Newbury and then missing it anyway stuck in a huge queue between motorway and venue. Wasn't until then I realised I dont like it anyway, standing around in the cold (hate being cold) all uncomfortable in a field then queuing again to leave. My son has asked if we can go to a display this weekend and I thought "noooo I dont want to!

I also agree about the noise on Strictly. Poor orchestra and live singers, doing a fab job and the audience are encouraged to whoop and clap over the top. What a waste.

Small talk. I know it's expected and it's a social norm but I hate it, especially when you seem to have the same banal mini-conversation multiple times a day with different people. A few times I have tried to hide so I can avoid it. A couple of times I've been caught hiding. Awkward.

BillieWiper · Today 14:04

I'm with you on all but the pizza one.

For me I like lots of flavours on every bite. Like if it's meat, potatoes, two veg and sauce I have to have a little bit of each in every mouthful!

I feel I'm kinda so unadventurous that I just wouldn't do something I had a suspicion I didn't like. I would try any food though once!

TheLastSilverSaint · Today 14:04

Nights out that involve moving from one place to another. You have a couple of drinks in a pub and someone will say ‘Shall we go somewhere else for the next one?’

No. We’re fine. We’re at a table. Our coats are over the backs of our chairs. We like the pub, we can hear ourselves speak, G&T here tastes the same as it will if we go somewhere else and our conversation won’t be any different elsewhere. We can just stay put. SO WHY ARE WE AWKWARDLY SHAMBLING AROUND THE CITY IN A STRAGGLING GROUP?
