Crisis What Crisis? Will the Fridges of Doom Prove Your Friend Right? Continuation thread (4)

RedToothBrush · Yesterday 14:11

Twas the night before the US Midterms...

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendation are, here is the newest campaign blurb
https://beready.campaign.gov.uk/

Not going to do a status report this time, mainly because it's all about What Trump Does Next right now.

Are you emergency ready ?

Find out how to be ready for an emergency in your area. Being ready for 3 days helps you manage while support reaches those in need. See what simple steps you can take at GOV.UK/BeReady

@RedToothBrush thank you!

Nuthatch26 · Yesterday 14:26

Thanks RTB.

We've had two power cuts in the last 10 days. Only lasting a few minutes each time, but a good reminder to keep power banks etc charged and ready.

DP just declared ‘We need to be prepping’…
I said well I bought pasta and water months ago and you laughed at that.

He says well I am onboard now.

I say why…

He says… THE FRIDGES 🫠

I don’t know whether to take it seriously or not, but I will replenish the pasta stock.

DH delighted by my very middle class 70s fondue set for cooking indoors. I had it for ages in the garage and then got reminded of it by someone online. He thinks the zombies stand no chance if you have fondue. [Sigh]

jonquillegalloise · Yesterday 15:50

Im mostly prepped. I have approx 2 weeks worth of water/food/logs for heating/cooking

I've been closely watching climatic/meterologic changes, the el nino is huge and will significantly affect global food chains, especially with fertiliser shortage issues and fuel for transport. Food potentially will get even more expensive food next year.

Also, the polar vortex is starting to collapse. This happens regularly but it has never happened this early. The indian ocean diapole has also slipped into positive and the AMOC is weakening. No-one really knows how these significant issues will interact with each other but we are hitting new records all the time. Its like an orchester, it doesnt matter if a few beats get missed, but once a few serious things go wrong, we may lose the capacity to cushion errors. We dont know when or what will actually happen, but things will no longer work.

Cyberattacks also make me very uncomfortable.

I think this post is the most depressing one I have ever written. Im actually a positive person in real life!

EasternStandard · Yesterday 16:58

Here for fridge type news. Thanks

HoraceCope · Yesterday 17:16

thank you.
Extra baked beans purchased!
wind up radio sitting on the windowsill, it works.

1984Winston · Yesterday 17:24

Im here, have not been keeping up to date with the thread as I found out im at risk of redundancy so I have been worrying about that instead 🙄

72Kit · Yesterday 17:44

Sunshineandrainbow, if it helps with the anxious feeling, breaking it into small jobs can make it more manageable. Pick one a week: a few days of meals that don't need cooking, water (about 3 litres each per day), a torch and batteries, a battery or wind-up FM radio, a charged power bank, some small notes. Once those are done you've covered most of the likely problems, whatever the headlines say, and you can give yourself a break from the news.

Hopefully all will be ok for you. I think redundancy is something we all have in the back of our minds at the moment

I have nothing sensible to add, but dirs anyone know how much rain we need to fill up resovoirs? We don't seem to have had much yet this autumn. (Overall, we had the storms but not much more)

Locally it’s been reported we need a wetter then ever autumn and winter to be out of drought by April. Yay.

Why have some people been given top of the range £3000 generators?

I could understand people who rely on electricity for essential medication, or those who need to keep medicine chilled, but for every autistic child? Or MH illness?

How are some deigned to be worthy but others are not?

If they don't know when it will happen, why have they already given them out

ThaneOfGlamis · Yesterday 17:53

Have run out of ideas on how to nutritiously feed fussy kids if we lost access to refrigeration. I figure filling will have to do instead. Peanut butter and super noodles will feature heavily!
