Crisis What Crisis? Will the Fridges of Doom Prove Your Friend Right? Continuation thread (4)

RedToothBrush · Yesterday 14:11

Twas the night before the US Midterms...

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendation are, here is the newest campaign blurb
https://beready.campaign.gov.uk/

Not going to do a status report this time, mainly because it's all about What Trump Does Next right now.

Are you emergency ready ?

Find out how to be ready for an emergency in your area. Being ready for 3 days helps you manage while support reaches those in need. See what simple steps you can take at GOV.UK/BeReady

Thanks for the new thread and loving the new name!

It was on Facebook that anyone with MH conditions, disabilities or autism has been given them. It struck me as odd as I have disabilities, my DS is autistic and my elderly mum is known to social services as well as being on the priority list, but others have been given them in my area, no idea how they assess need, as it appears very random

I don't think that's true...

Well we have an ASD here and no generator so far....

Yodeldodeldo · Yesterday 18:37

Child with ASD here, we've not heard about generators and he must be on some sort of list because he got called early for Covid jabs.

I suspect its an untrue rumour

Because it is not happening, that is why.

Hopefully all will be ok for you. I think redundancy is something we all have in the back of our minds at the moment

Echo this.

The toilet situation has very much been on my mind this week. I got back from holiday today and for two days our holiday let had no running water. Which isn't fun in a foreign city where you haven't got the stuff to deal with it. You don't miss it until you don't have it.

I have been crapping it the whole time we were away that it'd all kick off and that we'd get stranded but home safe and Trump hasn't done the stupid thing yet.

I was in Lidl within an hour of getting home though.

I suspect that it will be the last holiday for some time - costs are going to go through the roof.

From Japan. There are many similar messages on Twitter today:
The Disaster Prevention Agency is issuing such emergency messages, but the key point is that it's emphasizing how, in a national-level disaster, the government won't be able to provide everything.

In other words, if an emergency occurs, the country won't have the capacity to reach everyone, so please prepare on your own.

From what I've confirmed so far, 33 countries are issuing messages telling people to prepare for such disasters.

That is really good. Hopefully other energy providers will be able to do the same, for their vulnerable customers.

Locally it’s been reported we need a wetter then ever autumn and winter to be out of drought by April. Yay.

Across England as a whole, we need 120% of long term average autumn/winter rainfall (through to April 27). And it's not just about the total, it's about how it falls - we need day after day of soft steady rain rather than an occasional torrential downpour and then back to dry weather again

From a person trying to heat their home that just sounds horrible and miserable doesn’t it though.

A very wet meaning cold autumn and winter.

I mean I know we need it but winter is already just grey and wet without being wetter.

One of our local allotments already floods near to the knee at winter sometimes if we actually got 120% I reckon I’d need to take a boat. Road run off so technically not a flood risk area but it’s how they have built around that land.

It feels like we are being prepared for an asteroid hit. Probably because of the amount of countries being asked to prep

No, an escalation in the Iranian war - especially if tactical nukes are used - would have the same effect. Even if it's ordinary missiles it could take out the entire remaining middle east oil industry and trading through the Suez. That would be catastrophic to the world economy. Supply shock would be real. Panic almost inevitable.

It would legitimise North Korea throwing missiles about, and given Japan issuing warnings about the nearest bunker available.

I think both are equally likely and the way everything is so interconnected they’re probably part of the same whole anyway

Yep, unfortunately in some parts of the country it's a straight choice between a miserable wet winter and standpipes in the street next summer ...

Anything like that would get leaked no way people could keep something big a secret.

SSEN are giving batteries to some priority customers as there was a post in a sleep apneoa group I'm in. But as far as I know they are the only ones. Northern powergrid definitely aren't and in fact explicitly tell their customers that they need to source their own contingency. Which I did after they were no bloody good post storm arwen. yes I still bear a grudge about that.
