Crisis What Crisis? Will the Fridges of Doom Prove Your Friend Right? Continuation thread (4)

Twas the night before the US Midterms...

Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendation are, here is the newest campaign blurb
https://beready.campaign.gov.uk/

Not going to do a status report this time, mainly because it's all about What Trump Does Next right now.

The bomb threats on four planes in the last day, is that likely just a malicious crackpot, or could it have more alarming origins?

It all seems like psychological warfare right now.

Seems to me like disruption for the sake of it. Like smashing shop windows. I'm starting to think all the things going on are a plot to destroy western civilisation. Might sound extreme but if these events keep ramping up...

I think you are right. Very disconcerting

If you can run a dehumidifier, you have clean water.

Alex Wickham
Britain faces an “unprecedented” rise in cyberattacks in the coming months and too many businesses and individuals are “wilfully blind” to the looming dangers, its head of cyber security has warned

In a stark message delivered in a speech today, Richard Horne, head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, says the country is at a “Sliding Doors” moment

“In the coming months, we face a real prospect of an unprecedented rise in the number of cyber incidents.”

“Far too many of our organisations and supply chains rest on weak technology and operational foundations.”

“If leaders of organisations of every size and type do not take the responsibility now to make different choices then they will one day have to look their investors, shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, families and friends in the eye and explain why, despite knowing the consequences, they failed to make the choices required.

“When food isn't on the shelves, when lights aren't on, businesses have gone under. We may have to explain that we saw the warning signs, understood the risks and still didn't make the right choices. Why we remained wilfully blind.”

“Every day, our military networks are subjected to sustained and persistent, widespread attempts to penetrate our systems. Including notable campaigns by Russia that intentionally fall below the threshold of armed conflict as they escalate their attempts at hybrid warfare.”

“Despite the pressures of the Middle East conflict, Iran is still carrying out malicious cyber operations globally including against the UK and individuals that are seen as a threat to the regime putting them at risk of physical harm.”

“And we know that China highly likely has the intent and is best positioned to use AI for operations against our critical national infrastructure and other strategic targets with their activity representing the most sophisticated and sustained cyber challenge the UK faces.”

Geez at this re bomb threats

Seven planes, including three from the UK, have been affected in the past 24 hours.

This might help.

150 UK Red Cross resiliency centres has piqued my spidey senses...

I hadnt heard aboit this! Geez now I'm really nervous...

Is it just me - I feel like there's an escalation of bomb threats on planes and fridge hacking?

MarjorieWestriding · Today 14:57

@colouringindoors it would depend on the shape of your fireplace. If I was going to try it, I'd do without the trivet as the legs look to tall. A great-aunt of mine lived in an old farmhouse where they used an open range and she used to swing the kettle out over the flames, so it could work, but you'd obviously want to be careful.

Could someone please advise re basic water hygiene.

I have a store of water.

I have a Lifestraw personal filter which I understand takes out bacteria, parasites, microplastics, silt, sand etc.

What else should I add that is not too ££?

OneElatedBiscuit · Today 15:41

Where are the red cross resilience centres? Is there a news article

There is a link on thread three that the government would read out on the first day and then subsequent days in the event of an emergency. That covers water hygiene.

But in the first instance of a power cut, full a bath or other vessels with water as after a while that won’t be running either.

I went to my local 'random stuff you never knew you needed' shop for bulbs for my headlamps today and saw this and was intrigued but there wasn't any further info on the box so wondering how it works.
Also bought 4 canisters of gas for my camping stove but feel uncomfortable storing them in the house so they're in the garage now but wondering if that's the best place to store them.

Water collects in the tank of the dehumidifier. I never thought of that! I guess if one has power that would be another source of water.

So this is an issue that worried me as well. I am storing mine in a small plastic container with some silica gel to keep them dry (don't want rust!) and they're in the shed for now. They need to be off the floor so on some wood at the very least, otherwise you can get damp affecting the metal. I live someone pretty damp so that's why I've further enclosed them in a container with dessicant. Phew.

Make sure you have plenty of wet wipes/body wipes for washing as well as paper plates so you don't need to use water for washing up.

Didn't think about damp. They're in a bucket right now (for easy location) but I could empty out one of the lidded toy boxes and put them in there.

Natsku · Today 16:57

Halloween themed paper plates are on 70% off sale where I am so I'm going to stock up on them Grin

Daffodilsearch · Today 16:58

Our gas cannisters have always been stored in a plastic storage unit outside, even in winter, never got rusty but I guess they're in there a max of 18 months.

MarjorieWestriding · Today 16:59

I've read that drinking water from a dehumidifier isn't recommended because of any shite it's taken in, plus the tank could be a breeding ground for nasties. I suppose you could filter and boil it and then it might be okay, but I don't know.

Yes I think that's a good idea.

I imagine it would be more for washing with than drinking, otherwise as you say you'd need to treat and boil it.

Edit: Yes, just read up about it, definitely do NOT drink, probably best only for flushing the loo!

Just had a quick scan over Mumsnet. I haven't been on many other threads recently

Just saw this:
https://www.theguardian.com/food/2026/nov/03/kelloggs-rice-krispies-coco-pops-reformulated-rice-shortage?CMP=share_btn_url

I would expect that there will be plenty of shortages and reformulation due to ingredients expense and shortages. However might be worth grabbing rice, as it will probably go up in price due to climate etc

Snap and crackle but no pop: Rice Krispies reformulated due to lack of rice

Kellogg’s substitutes ingredient with rice flour, as climate crisis affects availability of some grains
