Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

ROUGH STATUS REPORT (as of 9am 22nd Oct - please note this isn't fully comprehensive, and is moving FAST)
Civil Unrest reported in:
France, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Albania, Indonesia - multi reasons, but largely due to economic pressures and the cost of living
Spain has had problems but these have temporarily stopped, probably due to significant weather related issues due to the Dana effect
More protests planned for this coming weekend
High Alert in the Middle East:
Netanyahu now committed to regime change in Iran, as he believes they are developing a nuke.
The US has pulled all Embassy Staff from Saudi Arabia and is hoping no one notices that they've ordered personal and families across the Gulf home and then seem to have lied that they have.
The Emir of Qatar has stated at their equivalent of the annual King's Speech at the Opening of Parliament that war was coming and to prepare for the worst scenarios. US pulling planes out of Qatar.
The Egyptian PM has warned the country of severe crisis ahead - given the nature of the country this is related to their alliance with Saudi Arabia and their reliance on the Suez Canal which the Yemeni rebels now control access to and their exposure to famine
Iran is saying if there is another attack, the gloves are off and they'll try and wipe out the middle east oil industry as they go down, as well as hitting critical civilian infrastructure.
Much movement / noise is similar to run up to the first US attacks this year. Debate over whether the attack will come before the Israeli Election or the US Midterms - possibly within 72hours - latest mood music suggests potentially this weekend. Seems to be shifting to a when not if.
Israel election: 27th Oct
Prices and Shortages:
Diesel needs no real reminder - we need it for haulage, mass transportation and farming, we are screwed without it. Fuel Emergency declarations in West Virgina, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Arizona, Nebraska and Texas - typically allowing limited dyed diesel use for ag or commercial vehicles. Illinois and Missouri have also allowed by not under emergency orders. Less reported is the fertiliser shortage and knock on effect, poor yields this year and the effect of El Nino on next years, sulphur export bans and the blockade on Ukrainian and Russian wheat exports which are particularly crucial in feeding North Africa and the Middle East. This is liable to have significant impact on the UK with 6% rises in food already expected next year (and there's every reason to believe this will be higher especially with civil unrest all over the place). Reports of aviation fuel running low in some parts of Europe with emergency supplies (which can't last forever) being used.
El Nino:
See above about farming and also think of disasters - like the ones Spain is facing with flooding. Storm Austin is incoming and there is a weather warning for the South of England with power outages and flooding possible today/tomorrow.
The Internet:
PHP is 70% of the internet. Its got compromised so it can pretty much all be hacked. This is VERY BAD (in capital letters). Many websites offline whilst this is sorted including multiple government ones around the world.
Just AI generally - everything from putting everyone out of work to just hacking and killing us all. No Biggie.
Trump and the Mid Terms:
Trump is firmly losing his marbles. He's defected to Russia, can't stop rambling about men's arses, is waving at non-existent people, his team are known to be considering ways to impose martial law, he's getting heckled at Trump rallies by his own supporters, 83% of all voters think the biggest problem in the US now isn't the cost of living crisis but government corruption. He's being called a traitor by some of his fellow Reds. Mid Terms look a disaster and Trump probably won't accept them. He's reversing bills that Congress passed weeks ago by executive order.
Mid-Terms: 3rd Nov
Ukraine and Russia:
Ukraine facing massive problems still cos Elon has got the ump. Starlink isn't working at face enough speeds. They've bombed a shedload of Data Centres in Russia. This has killed off the Russian Internet and many Trump/Musk supporters in the process (one way or another) which screws up Twitter (and its value) for them. Ukraine is getting blamed for diesel shortages cos they refuse to stop hitting Russian refineries even though it has no choice now its been cut off by the US. Zelenskyy now says Trump isn't an ally. Trump wants Zelensky gone and thinks Putin is being reasonable and Ukraine doesn't want peace. Germany states it would have activated Art5 if the confirmed Russian sabotage attack on Liepzig had been successful.
Russia is apparently planning to step up its sabotage campaign in Europe after having successfully sunk a few boats in EU waters (Romania / Bulgaria - these sinkings have been in both international waters off the coast AND within their official territorial waters).
Economy:
Lots of debt. Much concern over the implications of this particularly with regards to AI and state debt in the US, UK, France and Japan (but not restricted to). Much money put into gold by China. Background of this bad given the approach of potentially multiple crisis.
France Moody's credit review: Due tomorrow 23rd Oct - expected to be not good especially in the current political climate in France
UK Budget: 28th October

They are all interconnected and one or many could tip us into abject chaos. Or not. The risks here are sky high. Of what? Take your pick.

Obviously I understand that accidentally swallowing pool water isn't going to kill you. I just never imagined a day where I was mixing it with rainwater so me and the kids could have our daily 2l of clean, drinking water. Anyway every day is a school day as they say. Clearly the only person on this thread to be somewhat shocked by that 😂

Now you know, and all knowledge is good knowledge.

I am pretty sure you are not the only one not knowing either, and better to spread the knowledge than not as far as I’m concerned.

AndyouWILLATONE · 23/10/2026 14:45

Agree. Part of the prepared speech that I was reading, acknowledged that the advice might sound strange! So clearly the government recognises there are plenty of idiots like me! At least now I know. I think if we were in the emergency situation today and I didn't already know this information I would be scared and skeptical of the advice. So yes, now I have the knowledge and am more prepared!

PauliesWalnuts · 23/10/2026 14:52

To be honest @AndyouWILLATONE, I went swimming with my triathlon club last night and my coach tweaked my crawl style to the extent that I swallowed so much water I thought I was going to wet the bed. So far, I’m still alive so it doesn’t seem to do much harm 😁

Breadcat24 · 23/10/2026 15:04

I was coasting along with my usual store cupboard etc which was pretty full anyway, then we had a power cut- so I have now bought bottled water.
I have lots of battery powered fairy lights and batteries so at least it is pretty!

HeckYeah · 23/10/2026 15:05

I don’t wear glasses but if you rely on them it’s good to keep a spare pair if you can as they are critical.

Holeymoley28 · 23/10/2026 15:12

I’m going to agree to disagree with this.

Thanks for the advice/ tips. Feel scared but starting to prepare. Going to buy a battery powered stove. How long do you think we have until we need all this? A guess?

YouAreMyDoggySunshine · 23/10/2026 15:22

Just back from Tesco and it was very, very busy. Now it's Friday and perhaps payday for some people but the people waiting for click and collect were queued back. Very rare to see that. The shop lady who was bringing out the trolleys said it has been mobbed all day. The normal car park for people who do their own shopping was as full as I have seen it for quite a while. Traffic was backed out onto the main road. The garage for fuel also looked busy.

It's absolutely lashing of rain here but that didn't stop everyone from being at Tesco.

Make of that what you will.

nobody knows. Well perhaps members of govt, police etc are in the know but for most of us we are just guessing.

Powercuts or cyber problems - we are at the mercy of weather or Russia or anybody else trying to cause us trouble. Could be tonight, could be next week or next month. Nobody knows.
Food shortages - again influenced by fuel shortages which are caused by ongoing wars/Trump action. Panic buying could cause food shortages. Fertiliser shortages could cause food problems. Crop failure due to the hot summer. Disruption in France could disrupt our channel tunnel supplies.
Next weeks budget here in the UK might spike bond interest rates. We have the midterms in the USA coming up.

The problem is there are a whole bunch of potential threats and each one is caused by several different factors. I'm trying to keep laundry up to date and the likes as well in case we lose power for 3 days.

LOL.
Apparently low-ABV (2 percent or less) drinks cause a negligible diuretic effect, making its overall hydration level nearly identical to water. Will buy some weak beer perhaps this weekend. Probably feel more comfortable giving that to the kids in a dire situation where we had run out of water and I had to collect rain water from a bucket and mix it with bleach! 😂

@YouAreMyDoggySunshine yes my husband has just got back from the supermarket and said it was absolutely rammed too 😐

Tins shelves were probably half full at my big Sainsbury’s this morning. Tinned fish was low - no sardines at all and haven’t been for a couple of weeks but that might be a seasonal thing.

I didn't because mine was a click and collect order so I didn't have to go into the store thank god. I wasn't getting any tins as I stocked up on them about 3-4 weeks ago. Today I was buying fresh stuff and so that was fine and no stock issues.

Perhaps someone else will be able to update on that?

Oh well. Looks like people are taking heed of the stockpile advice and have all gone to the supermarkets. Better get your supplies folks before we have covid 'the empty shelves' rerun. I'm too bloody tired for another crisis.

If looked on a camping website. It’s already sold out. I was waiting until payday Monday to buy

Be interesting to see how empty they are by tomorrow night. Lots of people will be at work today but shopping tonight or tomorrow. Tinned sections are normally fully stocked aren't they so if they are half empty already......
Are we having fun yet!

I was in my local Tesco earlier, although the car park was busy which is normal for a Friday, it was all very calm, no frantic panic buying, shelves well stocked. People just buying as normal. The garage wasn't particularly busy either.

I got some money out at the cashpoint, no queue at all.

I didn't know you got battery stoves although I am the proud owner of a battery operated kettle now.
I bought a camping stove a few weeks ago but it takes little tins of gas.
I have gas hob in house and so I bought manual lighters in case the power goes out and it need lit manually.

Holeymoley28 · 23/10/2026 15:40

I got my half term top up shop coming tomorrow will be interesting to see what’s sold out.

I did notice when I placed it all the frozen chicken burgers were sold out.

As a fwh however plently of fresh foods still being chucked out daily by the shops nobody is in a rush to eat those apparently.

I didn't go into the store so I was just going by how full the car park was (and the queue trying to get into the carpark). Looked pretty busy outside but like you say it might have be calm but busy inside. The shop assistant though said it had been mobbed all day and it was unusual for people going for click and collect to be queued back. I suppose it depends where you live.

Please can you share your battery stove? Thanks.

You can get electric stove for use in caravans that would run off a 12v leisure battery.

Though you’d still need to trickle charge it via solar to be able to use it more than a couple of times.

MrsPernicious · 23/10/2026 15:57

Half term next week, everyone is doing a top up.

DH popped into Asda on his way home and says it was busy but civilised.

Legoandloldolls · 23/10/2026 16:04

The only things I dont have but need, I normally get from Costco. We are planning to go this weekend. I expect it will be unbearably busy. But I can always go back after half term.
